On February 2nd, 1994, SEGA released Sonic 3, making today two 20th Anniversaries.
The game, and 20 years of Knuckles the Echidna.
Sonic 2 was released on Tuesday, dubbed Sonic 2'sday, whereas Sonic 3 launched on Groundhogs Day, but the holiday was renamed by SEGA to Hedgehogs Day. I think fans are still petitioning for it to become an offical holiday.
Goodness... I remember playing Sonic 3 on the Mega Drive like it was the day before yesterday. What do you think that third multi-platform Sonic game might be?

@MyNameIs- I'm exempt from that. @DreamyViridi While it was leaked on Hedgehogs Day, I'm holding out for that Sonic game rumored last year, the one with a bunch of playable characters like Knuckles in 2D and 3D. I mainly want it because Black Knight was the last Sonic game where you could play as someone else than Sonic.
