Topic: Best 3DS Zelda game for a newbie?

Hi all, I've just bought a new 3DS (XL). Now, apart from Pokemon, I've never really been a nintendo gaming convert (my formative gaming years were spent on the original xbox). However, I've decided to give it a go, and thought a good place to start would be the Zelda franchise. There's so many titles available, and having never played it before, I'm not really sure which one to purchase. What would everyone suggest? Obviously there's no "answer" as such, but what's your opinion?

Ocarina of time 3d is a great game to start.

The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

a Link Between Worlds is shorter
but both are pretty much the same in terms of difficulty(unless you're willing to waste some play coins to get hints, then ALBW is a lot easier) and both games have a harder mode that's unlocked after beating once, though OoT3D's master quest mode is more inspired than ALBW's hero mode(in one the dungeons change and the monsters are stronger in the other only the monsters are stronger and some minor nice stuff is added)

Given that you've paid for a 3DS, it'd seem a bit silly to go straight to a NES, GBC or DS game. So go with either Ocarina 3D or A Link Between Worlds. They're both fairly good games to start with. If you've never played a Zelda game, I'd say go with A Link Between Worlds because it's quite a lot easier. But never so easy that it takes away from the game.

OK thanks for the replies, seems either of the 3DS one's would be ok. If Ocarina is longer I might go with that just for the value-for-money aspect.

I actually think going with one of the GBC options might be better if you want to try the top-down perspective. Link's Awakening and the Oracle games are (for me) the best in the franchise and investing five or six bucks, I forget how much, compared to 40 means low risk of losing if you're not into them. If you're more set on the 3D type game then Ocarina of Time is the answer though. Really though you can't go wrong no matter what you choose

Game(s) right now: Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon, World of Final Fantasy Maxima

nothing beats Minish Cap, if it was on 3DS I'd have told the OP to get it yesterday.

Yeah, he did specify "on the 3DS". The only way to get minish cap was if you were one of those early adopters.

Inb4 the Ocarina of Time fanboys sho... oh, looks like I'm too late.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

nah, can't say anything for the other guys, I'm just recomending OoT because it's longer. if it was for the fun ALBW would definitely be better(though I'm definitely biased since the Zeldas I enjoyed the most are almost all top down)

Well, to be perfectly honest, anything will do really. They are all quality games on their own. All with their distinctive strenghts and weaknesses.
And pretty much all of them are worth their money. Youll definitly gat a huge chunk of game for your money regardless.
Maybe go with OoT, to see if all the claims about "best game ever made" are real, or go with A Link between Worlds, to know what people are talking about at the moment. As an added bonus, you could continue your quest in A Link to the Past afterwards (not on the 3DS mind you). A bit out of order, but its a zelda game, the order doesnt really matter that much
Or you could get the excellent GBC adventures. But try to get both oracle games together. Each one gives you a passord at the end for a second quest in the respective other game. And if youre going for second quest goodies, youll be swapping games and using the 3DS notepad like a maniac
Though i would stay away from the NES titles, as they dont really represent the series as it is by todays standarts.

So in all seriousness, despite the NES titles, you cant really pick the wrong one as all Zelda games available on the 3DS are excellent ones.
Maybe just get the cheaper ones first, and while finishing them, the others might be available for less by then, maximizing you zelda bang for your bucks

Both A Link Between Worlds and Ocarina of Time 3D are great for getting into the series. OoT 3D is a remake of a classic N64 game, and the best way to experience it nowadays. Since it's mostly just an updated version of an old game, there may be points in the game that haven't aged well, but for the most part it's still a solid game. ALBW is set in the same world as a Zelda game on the Super Nintendo called A Link to the Past, but it's not a remake. There's plenty of new content to differentiate ALBW from the game it's based on, and this is pretty much the most open Zelda game that also has a sense of direction.

Ugh. If you don't have anything useful to add to the discussion, why post at all?

Careful with that, the entire internet could fall apart.

Get OoT 3D, best introduction to the series. It'll make you want to play the entire series.

Definitely would recommend ocarina! But if you want A Link Between Worlds try seeing if your local best buy has it in stock for the buy one get one free deal! if not, just go to walmart or target and ask for a price match

The Oracle of Ages/Seasons games are very newbie-friendly too.

Not Link's Awakening, though.

I hate to be the one to break it to you but most online english speakers don't actually live in the US.
