Author Profile

Damien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media's sites from an editorial perspective. He's also the editor of Time Extension, the network's newest site, which – paradoxically – is all about gaming's past glories.

I've been gaming since the late '80s (Atari ST for life!) and my first console was the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis – I've been something of a Sega fanboy ever since. I began my career in video games writing for magazines and websites such as Retro Gamer, Pocket Gamer and GamesTM, before shifting to a full time role on the Hookshot Media network as Editorial Director.

Experience

Damien began his professional journalistic career with Retro Gamer magazine and has since written for Pocket Gamer, Eurogamer, CNET, Red Bull Gaming, SFX Magazine and many other clients within the tech and video game industries.

As a co-founder, Damien has been with Hookshot Media from the very beginning, holding various positions prior to his current role as Editorial Director. He was the Editor on Nintendo Life for more than one period during this time, and is currently the Editor of Time Extension.

Damien’s work on Time Extension sees him covering all aspects of the site’s retro gaming brief, including news, reviews, guides and features.

I love sharing new and old stories about the vibrant history of video games

Expertise

Damien’s first game system was an Atari ST, followed by the life-changing Mega Drive! Since then he’s owned pretty much every major gaming system and handheld to hit the market.

Damien’s favourite all-time console is the Sega Mega Drive. Not only was it his first console, it also introduced him to the world of Japanese import video games and arcade-perfect coin-op conversions. If he could only take one system with him to a desert island, it would be the Mega Drive.

My favourite genre? Probably shmups, followed by arcade-style fighting games. I don't have much spare time for gaming these days, so when I play for pleasure, I like games I can quickly jump into for a short period!

Damien’s Favourite Games

From the Archive

We asked Damien to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

The Making Of: GameFan Magazine - Drugged Coffee, Pirated Games And Empty Bank Accounts

I love doing deep-dive pieces into the history of the magazines and publications that inspired me, and this one was one of the most fun.

The 'Kawaii' Is A Nintendo Wii The Size Of A Keychain

Seeing modern-day hackers take old tech and repurpose it for a new generation is one of the most fascinating aspects of working on Time Extension, and it was encouraging to see the reaction to this news article when it went live.

Feature: How Rik Mayall Helped Bring Anarchy To Nintendo UK

Rik was one of my heroes growing up, so it was humbling to be able to speak to some of the people who worked with him in this tribute piece, which was recently republished to mark the tenth anniversary of his tragic passing.

  • News Support Redux: Dark Matters Kickstarter and it Could Come to 3DS

Dreamcast version could bankroll a Nintendo release

Kickstarter campaigns are certainly in fashion right now, with everyone and their auntie turning up cap in hand to plead for your support and cash. • Hardware Review Hyperkin SupaBoy Portable SNES

The biggest retro hardware release in more ways than one

The lapse of hardware patents on retro platforms has resulted in an explosion of clone machines, most of which are produced cheaply in the Far East. These systems emulate the performance of consoles such as the NES, Super Nintendo and Genesis/Mega Drive, all of which are no longer covered by...

  • Hardware Review Everdrive 64

    One cartridge, infinite possibilities

They may not find much favour with purists, but flash carts are becoming increasingly popular these days. The rapid march of technology combined with the low cost of flash-based storage has generated a wide selection of different options, almost all of which are produced in limited quantities and to very crude...

  • Review Strider (Wii Virtual Console / Mega Drive)

    From Russia with love

When you consider that he hasn’t starred in his own game since 2000, Strider Hiryu’s popularity in Capcom fan circles is impressive, which is largely down to the high regard in which players hold his 1989 coin-op début. Powered by Capcom’s CPS hardware, Strider was an arcade action platformer that redefined the genre;...

  • Hardware Review 3DS Circle Pad Pro

A thin line between love and hate

It says a lot about the absurdity of the Circle Pad Pro that when its existence was leaked last year, some hardcore Nintendo supporters refused to believe it was real. The concept of adding an additional analogue stick to the machine by the way of a chunky add-on seemed almost unbelievable; surely Nintendo...

  • Review Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (3DS)

    Score-based survival horror

Resident Evil 4 was a real turning point for Capcom’s survival horror series. Prior to its launch, the franchise was in serious danger of losing its relevance, but the changes introduced in the fourth instalment did much to reassert its dominance of the genre. It's also notable as the birthplace of the popular...

By sticking with physical media as the primary form of software delivery, Nintendo may have handicapped its new handheld challenger

How two unassuming British programmers succeeded inside the halls of Nintendo

As a nation, the Japanese have gained a reputation of being particularly insular; despite their wholehearted acceptance of many aspects of western culture, they tend to regard their own products, traditions and population as superior. Bearing this in mind, the success of...

  • Feature The SLG3000 and the Glorious Return of Scanlines

How to get that authentic retro look from your modern flatscreen TV

  • Guides Upscaling Your Retro Consoles for HDTV Sets

The quest for the perfect picture

Getting a pin-sharp, colourful image on a modern gaming console is about as hard as falling off a log. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 support HDMI output for true HD gaming, and although the poor old Wii is still stuck in the land of 480p, it’s still capable of kicking out a pretty decent image via component...

  • Review Ridge Racer 3D (3DS)

A familiar lap around the track

Namco’s Ridge Racer series has often been criticised for being a relic of a bygone era, a driving game that clings to outmoded arcade sensibilities and refuses to step into the super-realistic world inhabited by the likes of Forza and Gran Turismo. The irony is that when Namco Bandai attempts to take the franchise...
