Author Profile

Damien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media's sites from an editorial perspective. He's also the editor of Time Extension, the network's newest site, which – paradoxically – is all about gaming's past glories.

I've been gaming since the late '80s (Atari ST for life!) and my first console was the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis – I've been something of a Sega fanboy ever since. I began my career in video games writing for magazines and websites such as Retro Gamer, Pocket Gamer and GamesTM, before shifting to a full time role on the Hookshot Media network as Editorial Director.

Experience

Damien began his professional journalistic career with Retro Gamer magazine and has since written for Pocket Gamer, Eurogamer, CNET, Red Bull Gaming, SFX Magazine and many other clients within the tech and video game industries.

As a co-founder, Damien has been with Hookshot Media from the very beginning, holding various positions prior to his current role as Editorial Director. He was the Editor on Nintendo Life for more than one period during this time, and is currently the Editor of Time Extension.

Damien’s work on Time Extension sees him covering all aspects of the site’s retro gaming brief, including news, reviews, guides and features.

I love sharing new and old stories about the vibrant history of video games

Expertise

Damien’s first game system was an Atari ST, followed by the life-changing Mega Drive! Since then he’s owned pretty much every major gaming system and handheld to hit the market.

Damien’s favourite all-time console is the Sega Mega Drive. Not only was it his first console, it also introduced him to the world of Japanese import video games and arcade-perfect coin-op conversions. If he could only take one system with him to a desert island, it would be the Mega Drive.

My favourite genre? Probably shmups, followed by arcade-style fighting games. I don't have much spare time for gaming these days, so when I play for pleasure, I like games I can quickly jump into for a short period!

Damien’s Favourite Games

From the Archive

We asked Damien to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

The Making Of: GameFan Magazine - Drugged Coffee, Pirated Games And Empty Bank Accounts

I love doing deep-dive pieces into the history of the magazines and publications that inspired me, and this one was one of the most fun.

The 'Kawaii' Is A Nintendo Wii The Size Of A Keychain

Seeing modern-day hackers take old tech and repurpose it for a new generation is one of the most fascinating aspects of working on Time Extension, and it was encouraging to see the reaction to this news article when it went live.

Feature: How Rik Mayall Helped Bring Anarchy To Nintendo UK

Rik was one of my heroes growing up, so it was humbling to be able to speak to some of the people who worked with him in this tribute piece, which was recently republished to mark the tenth anniversary of his tragic passing.

  • News PETA Starts "Whaling" About Assassin's Creed IV's Animal Cruelty

Not a joke this time, presumably?

Animal rights orgnaisation PETA is no stranger to using video games to further its cause — it infamously attacked Mario for wearing a Tanooki suit, but later admitted that it was just a joke. Now, the group has its sights set on Ubisoft's recently-annoinced Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag for "glorifying" the...

Skylanders-style figures were "something we were thinking about", says publisher

Remember that leaked Rayman Legends trailer which appeared to indicate that the game would boast some kind of NFC connectivity with action figures? It turned out to be a case of Ubisoft "thinking out loud" rather than an indication of what the final game will contain,...

  • News Wii U System Update Adds "Stability Improvements"

  • Review Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate (3DS)

A change is as good as a rest

As much as it will pain Castlevania fans to admit, the series was in a pretty bad state prior to the release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow in 2010. Although a string of “Metroidvania” entries — produced under the guidance of the enigmatic Koji “IGA” Igarashi — had hit the mark from a critical standpoint,...

  • News Does The JXD GamePad 2 Remind You Of Anything?

    Certainly rings a bell

Last year we were graced with the Droid X360, a Chinese-made clone of the PS Vita which runs Google's Android operating system. This year, we've got another copycat device which shares more than a few similarities with the Wii U GamePad - it even has the same name. The JXD S7300 GamePad 2 has a 7-inch capacitive screen, a...

  • News Konami Won't Rule Out Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 On Wii U

    Never say never

Konami has been fairly adamant that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 isn't coming to the Wii U, thanks simply to a lack of available resource and time. This is perfectly understandable; developer Mercury Steam has only just finished work on the 3DS title Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, and has its hands full developing...

  • News Amazon UK Lists Wii Mini For £79.99

...after initially giving it a price of more than £100

Nintendo has so far refused to stick a price on the Wii Mini — which is coming to the UK on March 22nd — which means it's up to retailers to come up with a figure. Amazon UK initially went with the rather obscure amount of £103.56, while rival online store ShopTo picked £84.85, which is...

  • News Ubisoft: Rayman Legends Delay Will Result In A Better Game For Wii U

"When we saw we had more time, we saw all of the possibilities"

Rayman Legends should have been with us today, but we all know how that turned out. However, Ubisoft is clearly of the opinion that every cloud should have a silver lining, and CEO Yves Guillemot has made assurances that the company isn't just sitting on the finished Wii U code — it's...

A scaled-down edition of the original Wii console — which has...

  • News This Is What Real Life GoldenEye 007 Multiplayer Looks Like

    Proximity mines always win

It's actually quite scary to think how many collective man hours the team at Nintendo Life has spent playing multiplayer on GoldenEye 007. During our formative years, this highly esteemed cartridge rarely left the console and any person that didn't own a copy and four controllers was shunned as something of an outcast...

  • News Two Tribes: Toki Tori 2 Is A Metroidvania-Style Experience

  • Review F-Zero (Wii U eShop / SNES)

    The race of a lifetime

Looking at it today, it’s genuinely hard to believe that F-Zero was a SNES launch title. For a game that is now over two decades old, it remains remarkably impressive from a purely visual standpoint. The Mode 7 rotational and scaling effects — which were relatively new to console players back in 1990 — still look...

  • Rumour Rayman Creator To Part Company With Ubisoft

Michel Ancel to leave publisher after Rayman Legends is released?

Ubisoft's decision to hold back the Wii U version of Rayman Legends to facilitate a multi-platform launch has caused quite a bit of ill-feeling, but if this latest rumour is to be believed, it could end up costing the French publisher one of its most talented staffers. French site

  • Hardware Classics Nintendo DS Lite

This is how you redesign a console

Let's be brutally honest here — the original DS design was ugly. Quite what Nintendo's designers were thinking when they came up with it we'll never know, but the dumpy, two-tone casing hardly got pulses racing, even back in 2004. It felt like a system that was rushed out of the door purely to meet a deadline,...
