The Pokemon anime is a double-edged sword for me. The first season was light-hearted, off-beat, and interesting as Ash went on his adventures earning badges, catching pokemon, and later competing in the Pokemon league in Kanto. His journey actually showed charecter development like character development when he defeated the Orange Island league and headed to Johto. Johto was my favorite as Ash became a stronger trainer, more serious battler with a more diverse team, and Misty and Brock actually treated Ash like a friend, rather than mocking him because they gave him "two gym badges". He also beats Gary and actually has Charizard obey him. I especially love Master Quest. BUT....
When the show got rid of Misty and replaced it with MAY and made Ash give up all his Pokemon except Pikachu it was so upsetting. That's when the show really pushed its franchising angle and stopped developing the story line. Personally since that season haven't like any others. Don't even get me started about Diamond and Pearl, Black and White, or XYZ. The voice acting is horrible....and the journey never seems to end. What is most depressing is that Pokemon franchise cares more about the money than it's fans. Pokemon anime will leave a legacy of coporate greed and lackluster children's programming at best.
