Re: Poll: Do You Like The Chibi Art Style In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl?

Out of all the pokemon games I've played in the main series, diamond and pearl was one of the few I skipped over. None of the pokemon designs really struck out at me and I wasn't into pokemon as much during that period.

So, through the eyes of someone who has no nostalgic emotions over this generation, I think the style they went for is perfectly fine. I like that they tried to make everything with a 1:1 ratio to the originals which I think was a big worry for a lot of people. From what I've seen online, there are two main groups of people: the people who wanted a faithful recreation of what they deem as the best game in the main series, and the people who wanted it to look like sword and shield. Looking through the perspective of the pokemon company, they were most likely trying to cater to the group that wanted a faithful recreation as well as those who didn't get a chance to play the originals, hence why they look like the originals.

Where it all's falls apart however, is with the overworld characters. Because they were going for a 1:1 ratio with smoother looks, it looks very cheap and off-putting; they look like gogo crazy bones figures. It becomes even more apparent when you start to compare it with the remake to Link's Awakening, which has a very similar art style yet looks so much more lively.

If it was up to me, I would've went one of two direction's: either release it as how it looked on the DS, allowing new and old fans to experience it on the switch without changing what made the original so loved, or give it an Octopath Traveler kind of treatment with nice lighting and particle effects while adding new detailed animations to the characters and pokemon. I really believe that pokemon was at it's height when it stuck with it's simple pixelated look. It didn't have the super high fidelity of big releases, but I really enjoyed it's simplicity and letting the player fill in the blanks (I would even argue the old 2d sprites had more life in them than the new 3d models).

In summary, I'm happy the pokemon company is keeping the top down perspective look, I just think this new coat of paint was completely unnecessary, especially given how it would still sell well since at the end of the day, it's still pokemon.
