Re: Soapbox: I'm Causing The Slow Death Of Gaming Magazines, And It Hurts

I recently subscribed to EDGE after a decade-long break from games magazines. I absolutely love the mag - amazing production values, beautiful covers and just properly excellent writing.

The shift away from news to features makes so much sense in print - they're not just chasing the next new thing which is where online excels but actually taking the time to enthuse about and intelligently criticise games.

The previews, where they almost always have a chat with developers about the creative process, add a lot of value to something that could just easily be a lazy write-up of a YouTube trailer, and I love that the mag still feels familiar to someone who was poring over it aged 12 when I didn't understand any of the big words!

For £12 quid every three months it gives me a couple of hours of reflective, informed copy about a hobby I've gotten back in love with.

I will always miss the days when my shelves would be heavy with the in-joketastic likes of ONM, GamesMaster, CVG, Official Dreamcast Mag and the mighty, mighty NGC. But so much of that irreverent humour and news had made the leap online, and I'm really glad EDGE is still flying the flag for longer-form stuff.
