The worldwide release of the 3DS was in March of 2011 with Japan a little earlier on February 26, 2011. So it is just a little over 3 years old now so basically it is about halfway through a normal handheld life cycle so there should be high quality games ahead for at least two more years. The 2ds and XL models may push it to 3 or 4 more quality software years. I don't expect a true handheld successor until late 2016 at the earliest.
