SPOILERS I have a diving suit and a small submarine at the back of my museum. I think the trigger was catching and donating both the Coelacanth and the Oarfish, you may have to catch a Barreleye too (that's also in the same tank). Hopefully it will be a feature we can use in the future and not just a nod to ACNL.
