In some industry news this week, Fortnite creator Epic Games has reportedly told developers behind a new Disney title "to use more artificial intelligence tools" to complete it, after delaying the project.

According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, developers working on this Disney video game collaboration, which is described as a "shooter featuring characters from the Marvel and Star Wars" universe, have apparently been instructed to implement an "AI first" production model from here on out.

Bloomberg: Developers on the game...were instructed to implement an “AI first” production model using tools such as Anthropic’s Claude. Humans will then manage and guide that work.

In an internal messaged reviewed by Bloomberg, a game director supposedly told staff there would be "no more hand-written code" and art would be generated with "AI workflows". It's claimed this announcement has left "some Epic developers stunned".

In 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games. As part of this, the plan was to create a "games and entertainment universe" over a "multiyear project". This title in the latest report was originally targeting a "March" release, but a new date has not been "communicated".

As noted by Bloomberg, Epic has been "pushing hard for the use of AI" across multiple divisions, but this is the "first time" a major game company has attempted to develop a title "primarily with AI". Another AI story doing the rounds this week is about the Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, who has generated a brand-new game in 30 minutes.
