If you haven't already noticed, there's a lot going on with the blue blur Sonic the Hedgehog this year.
So far there's been a movie released, a retro collection and in November we'll be able to get our hands on the new open-zone adventure, Sonic Frontiers. Oh, and there's a new Netflix series coming this winter as well.
Speaking to Twinfinite, head of the Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, recently took time out of his busy schedule to acknowledge how 2022 is quite possibly Sonic's "biggest year" ever:
We believe that 2022 is going to be the biggest year for Sonic. We have a lot of great things that we’ve done this year and a lot of great things for the future as well.
The success of movie two has been really amazing and it really brought a lot of people into the audience. So we thank everyone for enjoying movie two.
We had the release of Sonic Origins right after that. We have the release of Sonic Frontiers coming up on November 8, and we also have the Netflix TV show, Sonic Prime, coming up this winter.
So we have this huge range of content that we’re going to be providing to people, and in the past 31 years, we haven’t had this much content come out ever.
So if you’re new to the franchise and you kind of want to get your feet wet into what a Sonic game is, we really believe Sonic Origins is going to be that title for you. It’s all of the original content. It’s what got the hardcore fans into Sonic the Hedgehog.
And if you’re a hardcore gamer or you’re someone who’s played a lot of Sonic games, we believe Sonic Frontiers is going to be an amazing game for that audience.
It’s the format of gameplay that we think people are expecting and wanting to play, allowing freedom for you to go and do the things that you want to do as Sonic the Hedgehog, so we’re really glad that we have that content. We hope the fans out there get to play, enjoy and watch all that we have in store this year.
Do you agree that 2022 could end up being the biggest year in Sonic's history when considering everything arriving this year? Will you be checking out Frontiers when it arrives this November? How about the Netflix series? Leave a comment below.

Sonic movie 2, Sonic Origins, Officially licensed Roblox Game, Fall Guys event, Sonic Prime, Sonic Frontiers, & many comic releases. That's a lot of Sonic in one year, I’m sure this is the biggest one so far.
I blame Sega management.
Anyone else remember Sega claiming they would be revisiting multiple older IPs early this year? Or the surveys they sent out which some of us filled out indicating the same? But since then all we've seen is a glut of Sonic, Sonic, and more Sonic. I wouldn't despise Sonic so much if they'd just give their other franchises like Shining Force and Skies of Arcadia another chance, but having Sega tell us they're looking to revisit some of them only to go even harder in the other, myopic direction makes me hate him even more.
@AtlanteanMan I think they meant the new movies for comix zone and Space channel 5, Space channel 5 movie is hype tbh. I want to see what bat whack insane plot they come up with. I hope there's some good dancing in that one.
How about giving the “hardcore fans” a hard copy of Sonic Origins. I’d love to have a collector’s edition on cartridge. It’s literally the only reason I’m not buying it.
@TheSaneInsanity That could actually be correct. Making movies based on those games seems kind of random, I can’t wait to see how they decide to do it.
“allowing freedom for you to go and do the things that you want to do as Sonic the Hedgehog” then why is the focus still on rails, dash pads, scripted slopes and other things that utterly eliminate the player’s freedom? It looks so blogged down with all their sacred cow design tropes that it’s hard to see what this freedom is other than letting you choose which scripted sequence you want to go to next, we aren’t seeing anything like Mario Oddesey where the moveset gives you a massive amount of freedom in tackling objectives instead this is a game where dynamic things like drifting and wallrunning are limited only to specific color coded spots instead of letting “you do the things that you want to do as Sonic the Hedgehog”
I've lost track of how many times the current year, or the next year is supposed to be the biggest year for Sonic. It's a great soundbite, but when you hear it every 2 or 3 years, it starts to lose its luster when the years don't live up to the claims.
gotta go fast
Sega marketing team sucks, and segas handle on it in general.
@strollin_stu Honestly, after the patch, Sonic Origins is much better as a collection now. Most of the bugs are ironed out, and the ones that are still there aren’t game breaking, at least from my experience (I have it on Switch)
Sonic is a washout. His 15 minutes are up. Give the mascot job to AiAi.
@GrailUK I have support of this idea. and I have fury. I also added the nuts to that statue. mustard of doom.
Meh. I feel like 2001 (Adventure 2 + switch to third-party), 2003 (first multiplatform 3D game + Mega Collection + Sonic X + more!) or 2006 (a bunch of games) were far bigger than 2022 (one compilation + one new game + one new cartoon). That's way better than what we got between 2018 and 2021 though.
Of course 2022 is Sonic's biggest year; we got Ugly Sonic in Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers! I don't think SEGA even saw that coming!
Sonic as Mariokart dlc?!?!?
Sooo how about Sonic Adventure 3 then? I really want to play as Knuckles & Rouge in those exploratory stages with that jazzy/ambient/rap music again!
"Wanna help me find the Emeralds?!"
... Wun can only hope.
@SalvorHardin I agree completely. Everything you can do in Odyssey is baked into the worlds naturally. Frontiers looks to be shoving random Sonic elements into generic open worlds haphazardly
@Sonicvic you're missing the massively successful and well received movie.
