Update: The demo is now available to download on the eShop! Head on over there right now to check out the start of three of the game's chapters, and prepare yourself for the game's full release next month.
Original article: HD-2D remake Live A Live launches on Switch next month, and classic JRPG fans got a nice little surprise for the upcoming SNES classic, as later today a demo will be available to download.
Revealed during today's Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, the demo will allow you to play through the start of three of the game's chapters — Imperial China, Edo Japan, and The Distant Future — and you'll be able to transfer save data to the main game when it releases on 22nd July.
After the Direct, Nintendo also dropped a Treehouse video with around 40 minutes of gameplay. The two chapters on show during this video are the Wild West and the Near Future, with Live A Live composer Yoko Shimomura also making an appearance
You'll be able to download the demo from the eShop at some point today. But if you're not sure whether it's your cup of tea, check out the Treehouse video below!
Will you be diving in to the Live A Live demo? Let us know!

A demo will really help on this one, it looks interesting but a demo might push to a purchase
Now I can’t keep saying I can’t wait to try this because I can now try this game!
the Edo Japan chapter is the longest chapter in the game (aside from the final chapter of course), so it's cool they're giving it away as part of the demo.
the Distant Future chapter has no combat in it - it's more storytelling and puzzles, so I would recommend playing it after the other two.
I've had a physical copy of the game preordered since it was announced so I'll pass on the demo as I'm pretty committed already but I'm looking forward to playing the full game (sometime after I finish Xenoblade Chronicles 3 probably).
I also have a physical version coming and kind of just wanna be surprised. I've wanted to check this for years but I can wait (hi backlog of dooooooom) another 3 weeks.
Demo should be good for people on the fence.
I'm definitely interested in buying a physical copy. I loved The 2D-HD visuals on Octopath Traveler. The demo will help me decide if it's a day 1 purchase or not.
Edit: the demo is amazing! I'm getting this game day 1! Xenoblade Chronicles 3 might have to wait a little while. I still need to finish Xenoblade 1 & 2 anyway lol!
This could be fun. The concept is intriguing, I’ll give it that. A demo could be just what I need to make up my mind.
Annnnnd that another demo to download...ah geez I have a problem.
Nice, glad that they are still offering demo that could be transfer to the full game like this. I may pick this one later around September cause in July it's gonna be Xenoblade Chronicles 3 first.
Square did a good decision with their recent switch games always having a demo.
Will skip the demo as I will get this day one. But happy others can try it out!
I won't think of it as a demo, I'll think of it as early access. I was between games at the moment, and ready for this one, but it's not out yet. The demo helps!
@Serpenterror I will do the same
I won't say no to a demo! Though when I'll download it depends on when my Switch schedule frees up a bit. I actually had a brief retail game hiatus but just started Metroid Dread yesterday.
Brilliant the progress of the demo carries over, I did the same with Traingle Strategy and completed the game
It’s preordered anyway, I’ll skip the demo
I’ve been re-playing Octopath Traveler. Better hurry up so I can sink my teeth into this!
I am stuck at work, so I am wondering if anyone here has tried this out yet, and if so, what do you think?
At any other time I would be curious about this game, but there’s a giant shadow of a bionis slapping a titan looming over it.
This game so hype! Sadly I'm waiting until my mom gives me her big 3d tv when she goes the RV life supposively soon ish. So I can really enjoy the POP of these visuals in 3D with it's instant conversion feature.
Well I played the original a long time ago so I'm not too keen to try the demo already... But I don't know how well can I hold off.
I'm in love with this game already from the demo. I was hyped anyway but it's, so far, everything I was hyped for Octopath being but was sadly disappointed it wasn't. So glad square gave me a demo to tide me over!
@Kairu It’s quite different but there’s a very good chance you’ll like this if you enjoyed Octopath
Well, I love the storybook look and gameplay of Octopath, Triangle, and this. Triangle is honestly my second favorite Switch game of the year so far, behind Arceus, and I loved every minute of it. I played a chunk of the demo for this one and I can say that I think I’m going to hold off on this one. It’s interesting, for sure, but I remember the original being interesting, but not quite “there,” to use the vaguest term possible, and I felt that way from this demo too. There’s just something gameplay wise that doesn’t vibe with me, but that’s ok. I may continue to play around with the demo. The only other game I’m playing on Switch currently is Omori, and that’s it for a while on Switch. Hopefully it grows on me.
