You know when we write stories that basically boil down to "Japan gets cool stuff, you don't, sorry"? Yeah, we've got another one for you. Sorry!
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, which is due out in July 2022, is getting a neat physical limited edition release in Japan which includes:
- The physical game
- An art book
- Digital Soundtrack
- Mask DLC — "Joker Mask" for Door to Phantomile and "Tat's Mask" for Klonoa 2
- Stickers
- Glass set
The Special Edition of Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is available to pre-order on the Asobi Store in Japan, with a purchase bonus of a poster (available while stocks last). It costs 14,278 yen or around $123 / £93, but the Asobi Store only ships to Japan.
There's also a new TV trailer alongside the special edition announcement:

That caption was the hardest thing I've ever had to read
@Jackpaza0508 I came here to praise said tagline. It’s lunacy!
For every time KLONOA says "Wahoo!" Take a shot.
(Not recommended!)
If your wife gives you Klemonoa you need to have a conversation...
Digital soundtrack is disappointing. I needs more CDs to stuff under my car's armrest!
@Jackpaza0508 it is pretty desperate stuff.
Super random but a little related. Are the Klonoa GBA games worth it buying on the Wii U. Never played a Klonoa game before and have heard good things but I just don't know if those hold up to someone trying them for the first time in 2022
Nice job squeezing the word Lemon into Klonoa.😁 @KateGray
The bad Asobi registration is for Japan only.

So no options for those outside of Japan. I think trying to mail forward would be cost prohibited as well.
Ordered from Amazon Japan the only version I could get.
Let's hope we get a western physical release, non-special edition is fine.
@Zeropulse I would say yes. I played the first GBA game in the last couple of years and thoroughly enjoyed it. I never played it originally so don’t have any nostalgia for it either, although I’d played the PS1 game not long beforehand and really enjoyed that too. It’s kind of puzzly using the double jump while holding an enemy mechanic a lot. I haven’t played the 2nd one yet but imagine it’s more of the same, which is a good thing!
The original GBA carts for these games are quite expensive these days so the Wii U VC releases really are a bargain. I’d say go for it!
@jorel262 it’s already up for pre-order in the UK across various outlets (including Amazon). Not sure about the US though.
Glasses are some of the coolest things to get in a special edition, in my opinion. It serves a purpose and will remind you of the game for years (if glasses can last for years in your household). I love shot glasses more than I actually like drinking.
But I'm not sure Klonoa is the game I want to spend that kind of money on. I want the game, but a standard edition will be fine.
So Day 1 for me on Playstation
@jorel262
Here you go.
@Zeropulse I first tried them on Wii U and I love them. Like GravyThief mentioned, they are puzzle-based platformers. A lot of trying to figure where or how to get to the stage goal.
The second game keeps things pretty similar with the puzzle-platforming. This one includes art you can unlock by finding the collectibles.
I never heard of this game until the direct but couldnt help but notice how good it looked.
I thought you meant like beer goggles. Side note, those are a blast to play football with, also very hard.
@blindsquarel Same, I thought they meant beer goggles. Honestly a little disappointed that this wasn't the case.
@Zeropulse If you’ve never played a Klonoa game before, then I would recommend playing the first one. The Wii version that came out in 2008 is fantastic, and of course can be played on the Wii U, although finding a copy these days is hard and they are expensive too. Highly recommend it if you can get your hands on one. Or just wait for it to be released on Switch.
I read the title of this article and honestly tried to figure out what the hell kind of glasses one needs to wear for drinking. Y'know, like a smoking jacket... drinking glasses.
...it's been a long 2 years =P
LOVEEE Klonoa. He was always very underappreciated compared to other anthropomorphic/furry mascot characters. Characters like Fox McCloud, Wolf O'donnel, Falco, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Sly Cooper, Ratchet, Clank, Lucario, Red XIII, Kimahri Ronso, and Freya from FFIX tended to get a lot attention than him. It's good to see him getting a second chance. I really missed his games. Hopefully the game will be well remastered, and we will even get a new one as a result at some point. Would love to see it.
@accc You can still burn the songs to a blank CD, even with the digital soundtrack.
@Zeropulse @GravyThief @SMW Heard both GBA games are solid 2D platformers, haven't played them myself, though I do plan to at some point.
I'd reccomend getting it on Wii U as well, especially if Nintendo actually goes through with the Wii U/3DS eShop shutdown, since the prices for the GBA carts on eBay seem far too high.
I'd imagine you'll still be able to find decently priced carts with enough patience and a keen eye, and I'd imagine Namco would probably do rereleases/remasters of them as part of a Phantasy Reverie 2 at some point, but I'd try to get the Wii U versions before taking the risk.
Also, while I have no desire to import it myself, the Special Edition looks pretty cool.
