If you're the kind of person who has time for farming shiny Pokémon, you'll probably have time for this newly-discovered shiny cloning trick — and you'd better get in on it fast, before Game Freak patches it out.
As Kattling on Twitter described, the process is relatively simple, it's just long.
Step zero is turning off autosave, so you don't actually lose your vital save by accident. Step one is to find a cave, or more specifically, an area that you have to access by pressing "A". Then, you just need to find your shiny, but it has to be one that's inside a shaking ore deposit, a tree, or a crate. Catch that Pokémon, and then save your game. Head into your cave, and wait for thirty minutes -- but be aware that Pokémon battles pause the time counter. Finally, leave the cave, and your shiny Pokémon will have respawned. Repeat for the shiny team of your dreams!
Here are the steps again:
- Find a cave or a separate area
- Find a shiny in the overworld, which has to be inside a box, rock, or tree
- Catch the shiny
- Go to the cave
- Wait at least 30 minutes in real time
- Leave the cave, and go to where the shiny was
- If the shiny isn't there, return to the cave and wait a couple of minutes before checking again
Kattling also notes that you should not do the following:
- Leave the area
- Wait outside the cave
- Complete any quests
Got all that? Yeah, easy-peasy, right? Go forth and catch all the weird-coloured lads!
Does this work for you? How many shinies have you got? Let us know in the comments!

This is to apologize for all the shiny gravelers and geodudes that have self destructed themselves in the other games.
There is Nothing wrong with doing this glitch as its a solo player game, its not harming a fly, and you don't have to do said glitch.
Now with that being said, I'm not going to do this, as in my opinion, it kinda takes out the fun, not shaming if you do it tho.
step 2 is where I'll give up
@darkswabber That's why I only care about shinies that I have found by myself anyway
Weee, more shinies! Honestly I think it would be cool if Pokemon in general came in different shades of colors, it would make them all feel more unique.
@darkswabber I understand hacked pokemon, because they go into the code and grab out a shiny they didn't find, but if they find a shiny, then clone it, is that really cheating? Its the real deal, just cloned for someone else's use, and if someone traded there shiny for a cloned one, I don't really see a difference? since they would have to have caught that shiny in order to clone it in the first place.
I'm not going to do the glitch tho, as it takes the fun out of it in my opinion.
How does waiting half an hour in a cave actually WORK!?
Personally, I don't like using exploits like this. It's like what @darkswabber said: I like having the memories of either grinding out a hunt and finally getting what I'm looking for or suddenly finding a random one while exploring. Exploits like these would just leave a bitter taste in my mouth when I see them in my box.
Trust me, I'm the guy who did the harmless raid den exploit in SwSh when it first came out and it haunts me to this day, I don't like using exploits.
I'll come back when a clone feature is found with the Pasture/PC box
Do not ruin another game with your filty cheats please.
This is good for shinycoin.
I don't get why people make a big deal out of things like this.
"Oh no you hacked a pokemon with a slightly different color palette instead of grinding for hours like the rest of us how dare you!"
I don't know about you but I never enjoyed the grind of shiny hunting when I still played pokemon, or ev/iv training, which is even more tedious.
If someone wants to skip through all the tedium then so be it, it's not even affecting you.
@iLikeUrAttitude IKR? "How about we shame this person over here for not finding the pokemon that has a 1/4096 chance of spawning!"
I understand hacked pokemon that might ruin the game for other player's online, with moves they can't have, stats and all, but a player cloning a different colored pokemon is not going to kill you or your Enjoyment, it only effects there.
@iLikeUrAttitude and this isn't even hacking or all that convenient to begin with. From the instructions, it's clear you still have to find a shiny legitimately, perhaps using the method with the worst odds in the game to boot.
This just makes the game respawn the same pokemon after waiting a literal half-hour.
@Eel Thank you!
@Eel
It may not be hacking, but it is still strictly disallowed.
@Screen by whom, exactly?
It's a random harmless glitch. They might patch it. But it's not exactly giving anyone any unfair advantage.
@Screen According to who else but you lmao.
At best this is just an exploit every is free to do.
If this isn't allowed then neither is horde farming in XY, helpers in Sun and Moon, shiny chains in ORAS and every other method used to hunt shinies in pokemon.
@Screen Where's the rule book mate?
Perhaps calling it "cloning" makes it seem worse than it really is.
From what the article says, this is just the game spawning the same pokemon again after it was already caught. It's definitely an oversight on their part, and could realistically be performed by accident.
Still, to take advantage of it, this requires the person to actually find a worthwhile pokemon first, from a very limited pool of options. So it's ultimately not that useful.
@Snatcher When they pull one out I am strictly following by those guidelines. Pokemon pic and all, they know what's up
@Eel and everyone else
It's disallowed by Gamefreak because SwSh compatability is being added soon, don't cheat and have a lovely day.
@Screen You don't speak for Game Freak, and you certainly don't speak for "everyone". This exploit will be patched out eventually, yeah, but it is such a niche application that it's nowhere near "ruining the game" lol
@Bret
I never claimed to do those things. GF doesn't allow it, our opinions don't matter.
@Screen Send link of this not allowing please.
@Screen Last time I checked they don't allowed hack't pokemon, Not cloned pokemon that you already own/ have.
@Screen Are you hearing yourself right now? You're literally speaking for Game Freak in your response. Saying this is "disallowed" is another opinion that doesn't matter, just like ours. You don't speak for GF.
This exploit will most likely be patched out, but also most likely GF/TPC/Nintendo will not make any specific statement about this glitch, and the patch notes will just say "changes have been made to improve the gameplay experience" or something, and folks will test this glitch and find it no longer works, and that will be the end of it.
Reading the VGC rulebook is not me speaking for them, I'm just reading offical information.
Section 4.3 of the rules states that manipulated pokemon are illegal in competative play. Our opinions on whether it should or should not be allowed don't matter.
@Screen Well the shinies that are being caught aren't being manipulated, the spawn rate for them is.
So this isn't an issue at all.
@iLikeUrAttitude @Screen yeah these are not "manipulated pokemon" in any form or way. It's just an oversight in the code of the game that allows you to catch the same pokemon twice via normal gameplay.
And I don't think anybody here is even thinking about the possible competitive applications of duplicate shiny geodudes.
It's whatever if SwSh compatability doesn't happen,
But at least you know I'm not making this stuff up, GF has been very good about patching dupes.
@Screen honestly the worst that could happen would be Pokemon Home removing the duplicates when you transfer them.
On that subject, something curious happened to me... Pokemon Bank actually rerolled the stats of a few shiny Celebi I cloned using the box glitch in Pokemon Crystal (I soft resetted for months to get that one!). So, Bank itself legitmized the clones, by making each one unique.
Oh that is wierd, GF did leave that glitch in intentionally, so maybe that was also intentional?
@Screen could be just a convenient side effect of whatever process is done to convert the pokemon to the modern games. It certainly did confuse me back then when I checked their stats though!
Is it more ethical to clone shinies than to capture them from the wild and potentially hurt all of them in the process? Aren't clones people too that deserve freedom just as much as anyone else?
I don't think there is a right answer to these questions.
