UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 8th January, revealing that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has remained on top for a second week in a row.
The news means that, despite the game launching way back in 2017, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has so far been top of the charts in the UK for the entirety of 2022 so far (yes, we're aware it's only been ten days). The streak will no doubt come to an end at some point, but it's impressive to see that Switch's best-selling game is still doing the business after all this time.
Four other Nintendo Switch exclusives join Mario Kart in the top ten this week, with many positions going unchanged.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:

Well, great for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
But it will be nice to mix up with other cartoonish racing games from different companies.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not the only one game to be worshipped as must buy games.
I think other racing games such as Crash Tag Racing or Team Sonic Racing or Race with Ryan or Cars 3 are still good enough.
More content please, Wii U version had more DLC.
It’s weird how the U.K. charts still haven’t incorporated the digital data figures into physical data. They have it on hand because they apparently publish it separately. It would be interesting to see how these charts would look if included.
The game that simply refuses to get Blue Shelled. Oh, the irony...
@FragRed
Since Nintendo doesn't share their digital data, all first party Switch games would disappear from the charts.
The rumoured Mario kart 9 would fly off the shelves if it wasn't an unfounded rumour, but mk8 would stop selling.
@Anti-Matter Race with Ryan! Confirmed troll.
@FragRed I'm sure I read somewhere that Nintendo doesn't actually release digital sales data so maybe why they stick to just doing the physical chart so they are comparing like-for-like.
@lyle_catcliffe
I mean i have some interest with Race with Ryan.
Different peoples have different interest.
I think that game is not really bad after all.
A Mario Kart in every home!
I like Mario Kart 8, but i played it to death on the Wii U, so I wish people would stop buying it. As in my mind they wont release 9 until this stops being in the top 10.
@Rhaoulos Yeah the question Nintendo will have is if a hypothetical Kart 9 on Switch would just be soaking up all the sales MK8Deluxe would be getting anyway.
Probably why the same team did ARMS.
Much as I regret it (cause I've been done with MK8 for years) you cannot argue with those numbers and the resulting business logic of not releasing a successor. They'd burn money, sales would just shift from MK8 to MK9, and they'd have wasted the next console's #1 system seller.
@NintendoWife Yeah even if they are working on it they almost certainly should just be saving it for the Switch 2.
It'd probably be the best possible game ever to launch a console with. (Alongside a hypothetical Minecraft 2 or GTA 6).
So I'd think if people want a similar game Chocobo GP this year is going to be the best bet.
@Anti-Matter Cruis'n Blast is my absolute favourite racer on Switch right now, but when nostalgia has a say in it, it's 1080 Avalanche, MK:DD, Burnout 3, Excite Trucks / Bots (had to import that last one), maybe NFS Nitro on Wii. But even then, Cruis'n Blast has already earned its spot among them, simply for having the most insane... "vehicles" and courses, and the most focus on, well, Raw Thrills (the name of the developer, I would have said pure fun and spectacle otherwise).
Not only Nintendo should release more DLC for Mario Kart 8 DX, but they could release all the DLC for free.
This game was originally released on Wii U on 2014, rereleased on Switch on 2017, and it's 1st place in sales even in 2022, they could hire a team to make a lot of free DLC for this game, and no need for paid DLC, microtransactions and Loot Boxes, just the money from sales at retail price is enough to fund this extra content, plus, this free DLC would make the game sell even more.
But of course, it's Nintendo, that's asking too much.
Hardware sales would be nice.
@lyle_catcliffe
Or people just have different interests?
@victordamazio Umm... Mario Kart 8 Deluxe doesn't have any paid DLC though. It already has all the Wii U DLC bundled into the main game
@victordamazio Frankly, that's asking too much from anyone. The game is of the highest quality and chock-full of content. It even contains the previous DLC for free. People agree and buy it in record-breaking numbers. Can you give one reason why Nintendo should do what you demand?
And all that stuff that you list... it's not there, why are you complaining about it? No loot boxes, no microtransactions, nothing. Just the highest count of courses (by far) ever in a Mario Kart game. I would even argue that any more would be too much for one iteration of the game.
@acNewUpdates they sure do! Like the good people over at Metacritic. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Garfield Kart.
I mean, GTA V is still in the top 10. I mean, this should allow plenty of time for proper sequels one would think.
@dmcc0 @westman98 That’s interesting to know about Nintendo not sharing digital data. Guess I can understand that from a business perspective.
@NintendoWife I know Mario Kart 8 DX doesn't have any of that, only Mario Kart 8 on Wii U had paid DLC, but came bundled on the DX version.
My point is that many games use things like paid DLC, microtransactions and Loot Boxes to fund more content for the game, but Mario Kart 8 sold so much, that they could make a bunch of free DLC funded only with the traditional sales, 38.74 million on Switch and 8.46 million on Wii U, just using the money from like 3 million of those copies to make free DLC wouldn't hurt much, and the game would sell even more.
Time to buy my 3rd copy of MK8 and my 8th copy of GTA5
@Kayvoo The Switch version has all dlc of the Wii U version + additional modes and characters. So...
At this rate Nintendo will release their next console with Mario Kart 8 Ultra Deluxe
@sanderev
..so... where was the additional content? I should have clarified - Wii U got DLC. Switch has received none.
@Kayvoo Yes, while Mario Kart 8 on Wii U had paid DLC, and Mario Kart 8 DX on Switch had all the DLC included and some exclusive content, DX never had extra content after launch.
Which they could have released as paid DLC, or even better, free DLC thanks to so much money they got from sales and still get.
Edit. Link got his BOTW costume and bike in a free update, but overall, the game didn't have much extra content after the launch.
People who got their Switch for Christmas spending their gift cards and dosh they got from granny!
And this is why people presuming the MK9 that's "in development" thinking it'll be coming any time soon, are deluded I'm afraid. It'll be 2023 at the earliest.
@victordamazio they did provide Link in his BotW outfit and bike as post DLC for both versions to be fair.
@Bentendo1609 Agreed. Literally why would they bother when it's still number one all over the world? It's the epitome of MK racing so Nintendo clearly are better off working on other stuff right now.
@victordamazio Tbh, it can hardly sell better than it does. Recently I learned that it's on the #7 spot of the bestselling games ever, and going.
And what would additional content really achieve? MK8 contains the record number of 48 tracks. When they released the DLC back on Wii U I observed that the new tracks would only pull me back in for a short time. Even if you are an avid player, at some point you'll just be done with a game because it doesn't feel new anymore.
At the same time the current amount of content is already bordering on overwhelming for new players. If I was Nintendo I'd try to make the next MK a super focused game. Maybe even back to the roots, 8 characters? And create excitement through some other kind of game design finesse.
... and actually the overlong MK8 life is perfectly normal if you deduct the lost Wii U years. Tough luck for those of us who had one, but in the big picture the Wii U just never happened at 13.56m units sold :/
We need Mario kart 9 because Mario kart 8 is selling really well.
S/
@1UP_MARIO Is it wrong to want new Mario Kart content just because MK8 is still selling well? We're players, not Nintendo's accountants.
The thing is, I'd quite happily pay for MK8 DLC, assuming we're talking about extra tracks. And I already paid for the Wii U DLC... (I really am Nintendo's b--ch, aren't I?)
But sure, this game is just free money for Nintendo at this point, and I can't see any DLC happening. The economics of adding content just aren't there for them when they're raking it in week after week just with what's there already.
@Rosalinho no it’s not wrong. I also paid for the Wii u dlc. Bought the mk8 limited edition with the blue shell. It’s not wrong wanting more. I also bought Mario kart 8 deluxe on the switch and Mario kart live home circuit. Nothing wrong with wanting more.
Wow, this is just a list full of positive fan reception! We have:
1.Mario Kart 8 (a game fans heavily want to stop selling so that they can get 9)
2. FIFA 22 , (a game that is almost identical to all the other games even if you don’t buy the Switch version and does some seriously bad business decisions towards Switch owners)
3. AC:NH (a game which is some people’s least favorite Animal Crossing game due to some cutbacks on New Leaf, which I’m definitely out of the loop on)
4. Minecraft (a game people hate because it’s popular or it has BLOCKY GRAPHICS, lest we forget)
5. COD (another game people hate because it’s popular, and which I have no comment on the actual quality)
6. Ring Fit Adventure (kind of an exception, but I have heard some people say that it doesn’t deserve it’s sales because it’s a peripheral-focused game)
7: Spider Man:Miles Morales (The one true exception, this game is awesome)
8: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. (Incredibly mixed critical and fan reception when it first came out, even though I’ve seen just as many people, including myself, have a great time with it.)
9. Just Dance 2022 (I’ll just say it’s unpopular, and leave it at that)
10. GTA V (A series that is pretty persona non grata right now with the gaming community due to the remasters from what I can tell)
Just goes to show that critical/fan receptions and actual sales are sadly not always one and the same.
@JakedaArbok Even Miles Morales is just Spider-Man 2018 in a new coat of paint. Didn't think anything special of it TBH.
But agreed, there's hardly any original content in the top 10. It's just the same old stuff that was part of the top 10 a year ago. I mean, who TF is still buying GTA V? Same with Minecraft, everyone should own five copies at this point.
@Octane That’s fair, I kind of wanted more of the same in Miles Morales and that’s what I got, but I understand that some people might want new ideas in that franchise. Hopefully Insomniac cranks it up in the sequel. But honestly, I think the major reason that the most popular games are the same old stuff is that most popular games are pursuing the freemium (or at least really cheap) model. Among Us, Fortnite, Apex, all of these are still the most popular stuff despite all the new advancements made in gaming, and I would argue it’s simply because it’s accessible to parents. Don’t know what to get little Timmy for his birthday? Well, this game is free and popular, I’ll just get that! Sadly, it pushes first party and indie games alike under the rug because purchases on otherwise free games drastically limits sales on games that have a price tag.
@JakedaArbok Very true, but none of the games on this list are free. So there are still people buying GTA V..! Absolute madness.
The almighty beings at mercury steam blessed the human race with Metroid Dread and the best selling switch game is a 5 year old port of a 8 year old game. I love democracy.
Big Brain Academy UK retail chart rankings:
> Week 1: #36
> Week 2: #30
> Week 3: #28
> Week 4: #27
> Week 5: #26
> Week 6: #11
The weekly raw unit sales for Big Brain Academy are probably fairly low, but the legs have been remarkably strong.
@lyle_catcliffe, believe me, Anti-Matter totally isn't trolling when they say they're interested in Race for Ryan.
They post their game collection in the forums from time to time & own copies of games like Hanna Montana & other tie in properties like the Chicken Little movie game.
I want to point out that I'm not making fun of their tastes (people like what they like), but they are certainly are interested in such games.
I'm confident that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will remain the best selling switch game until 2025, or until another Mario Kart releases.
@westman98 No they wouldn't.
