Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be receiving a spot of maintenance today, leaving its online features unavailable for a few hours.
The game's online functionalities will be inaccessible from 4:30pm to 9pm PT today, 25th January (that's 7:30pm to midnight ET, and the following morning at 12:30am to 5am GMT). Nintendo notes that this is "expected and standard" maintenance, clearly intending to quell any thoughts that new content could be arriving in-game.
"On Jan. 25 from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM PT, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will undergo expected and standard maintenance. Online Play features will not be available during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe hasn't been updated since May 2021, when a couple of minor bugs were removed from the game. The last major update dates back to September 2018 when Nintendo Labo support was added.
If you were planning on playing a spot of Mario Kart online tonight and find yourself unable to do so, at least you now know why! Normal service will resume after the times mentioned above.

nintendo: "expected and standard maintenance"
nintendo fans: "UPDATE!??!?! DLC!?!?!?!?!? MARIO KART 9?!?!?!??!"
If only we got some more new tracks.... a man can dream.
Well, time for me to make a 2 hour video dissecting what this means for the Mario Kart series.
Wait what? F-Zero?!
They're adding Sans Undertale.
While Legends Arceus looks like a lot of fun, a Direct would be even better.
mario kart 9 confirmed
The lack of new content is why I mostly abandoned the game. Burned out on racing those same tracks for years and years now. Hopefully MK 9 is real since Nintendo is clearly never producing more DLC for 8.
Maybe a switch to those new servers?
@wanghosom Yep, every single planned maintenance or minor bugfix.
I wouldn't look into this as anything major
No direct is coming, no relevant system update, no DLC. It's just maintenance.
When you are in a public place, like a train station and see a sign saying that the bathroom is under maintenance, you don't expect to see Captain Falco inside that bathroom after that.
People are stilling looking for dlc on a 8 year old game. I think it’s time to move on
Let’s be real here, this obviously means we’re getting MK8DX DLC, Mario Kart 9, and a new F-Zero game.
Its happening...its happening!!
After the update the game will boot as Mario Kart 9.
Golden Chris Pratt character being added.
Mario Kart 12 is coming!
Pink Gold Waluigi is coming to Mario Kart 9! Everybody get ready!
@AlexOlney you mean Donshin from Donshin the Giant?
They're shutting down the online and will be redirecting the online modes to a coming soon eShop page for Mario Kart 9 😜
@AlexOlney
Plot twist: it’s actually Sans Deltarune.
They are changing the name of the Blue Shell to the ‘Masi Shell’
Well at least we got Mario Kart 64 to kill time with.
Since people won't stop buying this one Nintendo's update is going to switch the name to Mario Kart 9 and they'll sell even more copies of the same game.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Why? Just play the Wii U version.
@nukatha A waste of time hooking that thing up again, Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart 7, and Mario Kart DS already had me cover. These I could just pick up and play online.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Huh, all of those save 7 are on Wii U too. Why would you have unplugged it?
@AlexOlney That would be insane. I hope we get something new for a port. (even if I doubt about it)
I love how most people denied that this meant anything.
But it did.
Now we do have DLC!
