Update: Nintendo has now shared a much better look at Kamek in Mario Kart Tour. He'll be paired with his very own kart (known as the Zoom Broom) and his special skill is Coin Box.
Mario Kart Tour is quickly becoming the most expansive game ever in the series' history. Following on from the addition of retro tracks like Cheep-Cheep Island from the GBA release, Nintendo is now adding another new (but classic) character.
It's the Magikoopa Kamek. Although this isn't the first time Kamek has appeared in some way or form within the Mario Kart series, this does mark his official debut as a playable driver. If you look close enough, you should be able to see him in the background of the following image:
This new tour will be fittingly titled the 'Kamek Tour' and will include a remix of Ghost Valley 1. It follows on from the Frost Tour which included a remix of Vanilla Lake 1 and Penguin Mario. Will you be booting up Mario Kart Tour to try out Kamek? Leave a comment down below.

Well finally! I was getting tired of the Marios and Peaches clones.
It seems that they are running out of ideas for new Tours. They feel very repetitive and keep recycling the same tracks with a few twitches. I liked it when they introduced tracks based in real-life locations (hence the Tour name).
At least the changes in bonus have improved and it's much more fun logging in and beating the daily challenges.
Super Mario Kart R lives!
Oh wow, Kamek is finally playable in Mario Kart after 25 years stuck in Mario Kart 64 Beta. Better late than never I suppose, is just to bad Mario Kart Tour is a gatcha game...
For multiple reasons Nintendo having mobile games upsets me.
That's right folks, the new driver hiding in this image... Is a coin! Thanks to popular demand, you will now be able to zoom around the track as a Coin from the Super Mario series!
I left this game 6 months ago. However, my time with it was fun AND FREE. As always, with every MK Tour article, I’m waiting for the classic comments of how this game is the worst and how it squeezes your grandmothers heritance out of your pockets… even though I have never paid a single cent out of it.
Im glad for the people who keep playing this for free and keep having a good Nintendo time on their phones. It’s bizarre but this is one of the best MK entries in the franchise, at least content wise.
Well at least Kamek finally comes to Mario Kart after two denials with Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart 8.. just hope they'll put him in a real Mario Kart game too after this that isn't loaded with microtransactions.
we need Mario Kart Tour on the Nintendo Switch.... (excluding the micro-transactions and what not) or maybe Mario Kart Ultimate...
If any new Mario Kart content landed on my console, I would be so angry. 😠😠😠
(😉Just using reverse psychology there. I'd love new Switch Mario Kart content.)
Thank you for the anti-clickbait headline on this article. Putting “mobile game” up front is the nice thing to do
@the_weakest_link
I could see that actually happening eventually. I mean if you can play as a crate in ctr I don't see why not a coin in mario Kart.
Not counting the N64 Super Mario Kart R beta, Mario Kart: Super Circuit was the first official appearance of Kamek in a Mario Kart game (though only as a cameo).
@dinofan37 This has been a certified Terry Syvertson moment.
Don't tempt me Frodo!
@zapswitch
And there is a hack to play as a ring in Sonic the Hedgehog.
My expectations are getting higher for Mario Kart 9 with each update, since they refuse to update 8 for the fanbase that has been with them for years
Looking forward to Mario Kart 9 with Diddy Kong back please
All I see in this cover image are PlayStation action buttons
@LEGEND_MARIOID @NintonicGamer
You mean Mario Kart 10. Mario Kart Tour is 9.
@Deady Yeap to think Sony used them after Super Mario World, goes to show Sony took what Nintendo established. They couldn't come up with anything themselves.
Give us new content for mario kart 8 deluxe instead !
@DK-Fan
It is not that they are running out in ideas, it is that it is not a good idea to add new content very often, as this game is updated every 15 days, if so, it would be saturated with content and soon, in the future, the game would really be difficult to add new ones ideas, so the game would be doomed to an early end.
As they do, they make sure that the game lasts for years and that it really has new content, "really new", in the future.
@Total_Weirdo You are right, but the fact that their concept of mobile gaming is (in this case, I actually liked Mario Run quite a bit) poor gaming experience and gatcha mechanics, feels quite disappointing...
I love Kamek and I'm glad he's here. It's just a shame that he isn't in a console Mario Kart game.
I think Mario Kart Tour is Nintendo's best mobile title gameplay-wise, and the best Mario Kart content-wise. It's just dragged down too much by its terrible gatcha mechanics.
Also why is Nintendo mobile stuff like Pokémon Quest and Pokémon Café Mix on Switch but not Mario Kart Tour? Would have been such an easy fit.
Anyway, I hope MK9 takes a cue from the positive side of things in MKT. It's sad to see the mobile game having the most characters and courses.
@Porky Unfortunately you are right. Ha.
Things MKT does right.
-roster
-Reverse and Trick version of every stage
-character specific items
I really hope Kamek makes it into the mainline Mario Kart series. He would possibly be one of my regulars if he was.
