We love the Wii U, we defend it against many detractors, but it's also surprising when a new game is confirmed for the system in 2021. But it's happening, what a strange world this is.
The game in question, which lands on Wii U eShop some time this month, is SturmFront - The Mutant War: Übel Edition; it's a game that came out on Switch recently, and just like on the current-gen system it'll cost €9.99 / $9.99 / £8.99. It's also getting a digital release on PS Vita, so publisher Red Art Games and developer Andrade Games are clearly keen to get the throwback arcade-style title on varied platforms.
Though it's fun that the Wii U eShop will have a new game in the coming weeks, of more interest is the fact that pre-orders are now opening for a Switch physical edition; it'll cost €29,99 and be limited to 2900 copies, and you should head to the official site if you want to nab a copy.
We saw some of you asking for a physical edition in our previous coverage (around an interesting debate about the game's themes), so it seems the publisher is happy to oblige. And if you're a really big fan, you can fire it up the trusty old Wii U as well.
It might be worth a look just to revisit the sliding puzzle when the Wii U eShop loads...

Great to see something still being released on Wii U.
Gotta love the armour that is clearly not tightly fit, but still has chest muscle shapes and mandatory abs.
Also, I completely forgot about that Wii U eshop loading screen...
Tom bringing us news of a rare new release for Wii U. It's just like the old days.
I'm getting some chaos engine vibes from the trailer. It might be worth picking up.
Shouldn't it be limited to 2999 copies?
@FlashmanHarry
Or a high-speed Alien Syndrome?
Sorry, they’re also releasing it digitally on Vita? Aren’t Sony shutting that store down next month?
@gaga64 not anymore...Sony went back on that. Only psp store is shutting down.
@gaga64 Sony stopped this bullsh*t for PS3 and PS Vita
Is anyone buying titles on Wii U anymore? I was under the impression that most Wii U in question were hacked and used as Emulator boxes.
@Heavyarms55 I bought the rest of the Zen Pinball tables for grins. Had some $$$$ left over and bought a few indies
Was literally replaying Castlevania circle of the Moon on Wii U this morning, so yeah still use it alot for some games (got over 200 games on an SSD for it). Will check this out too.
I picked up the switch version. It's a fun throwback, although it's lacking any kind of two player mode, which is odd as it's a perfect couch co-op kinda game.
The Wii U will never die.
@Heavyarms55 Mine hasn't been hacked and most likely will stay that way for as long as I live. I can still find second-hand Wii U games around my area and occasionally get digital and Virtual Console games I missed in the past.
@Max_the_German @mattesdude ah ok cool, thanks
Cool. I'll get it on Wii U.
@Heavyarms55 Yep, I bought Shakedown Hawaii physically and I will actually get this game too. But, you are right, most folks are hacking Wii U now. Take care.
@Heavyarms55 I highly doubt that most Wii U's are modded. Unlike the Wii, the Wii U is actually quite difficult to soft mod. Wii Mode can be modded easily, however you'd be better off modding the ultra cheap and easy to find Wii than risking bricking the super rare and super expensive Wii U.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi
Let's hope not. I'm willing to fight for it. In fact, we should get this to become a trend. Pressure other developers to release things on WiiU. In 10 years they can make a documentary about the amazing comeback of the sleeper console. Call it "Wii didn't see U Coming".
For $10 it would be quite nice to play a new game on my Wii U in 2021, so I'm in.
@Heavyarms55 I am. Making sure that 1TB hard drive isn’t going to waste!
Last I checked only saw the PS4 version. Thanks, I picked up the Switch Physical. Reminds me of the top down levels in NES SuperC.
@IcarusUnwinged That sounds like a good plan, totally looking forward to that if it ever came to fruition. At least it sounds better than The Rise and Fall of the Wii U, a title which gets old nowadays since almost every failure stories used that same exact title.
@Heavyarms55 I just bought Wind Waker HD the other day, though that was mainly because I lost my physical copy. Might pick up other games off the eShop too, if I feel like it
@TowaHerschel7 ... Super rare super expensive Wii U????
Who names a product "Sturmfront" in 2021? What's the follow up going to be? "Kay-Kay and Clan"?
Totally getting this on the WiiU. Looks good!
But I also want the physical version for Switch. Argh. lol
@robr I really wondered if I was the only one who had misgivings about that title. But yeah, wow, that title.
This could be the start of the Wii U comeback I've been waiting for!
Reminds me of "Total Carnage" in the arcades.
Is this game any good? Has anyone played it?
