Listen up, American and Canadian Pokémon trainers - if you play Pokémon Sword and Shield on the Nintendo Switch, it seems you'll soon be able to claim a free Shiny Toxtricity in your copy of the game.
Serebii.net reports signage across stores in the US and Canada are popping up, which reveals this event will be getting underway on 19th February. It ties in with the release of the new Trading Card Game set, Shining Fates.
This pocket monster will be obtainable at GameStop in the US (via a serial code obtained using the Pokémon Pass app) and at EB Games in Canada (also distributed by a serial code).
Toxtricity is an electric-poison type Pokémon that first appeared in Generation VIII. Will you be taking up this offer? Still playing Sword and Shield? Leave a comment down below.

Ironically enough I have to pick up some Shining Fates preorders from GameStop that same day so I guess I will, I just don’t see the point in it due to me already owning one from a previous event Max Raid event and the lack of it coming with the Gigantamax Factor.
That said I DO find it odd a (and a bit cruel) that it’s being distributed via Pokémon Pass DURING a pandemic, it really should’ve been a Wi-Fi event.
Its ok but nothing trading can't solve.
An in-store giveaway in the midst of a pandemic? Sounds like a good idea.
So, I just need to pick up a pack to get the code?
Agreed with other comments about in-store distribution during a pandemic. I'd rather not risk my actual life for a shiny, thanks.
Pokemon Pass? Has that app been used for anything since Detective Pikachu?
@Rob3008 and @BooJoh like you are really staying home anyway. If you want it, wear a mask, you’ll be fine.
Seems like with these in-store giveaways, a lot of you don’t realize the whole point is to promote a product for physical purchase. It’s not just a free gift for no reason.
@CosmoXY "like you are really staying home anyway"
I'm immunocompromised and have left the house once - for a doctor's appointment - in the last 6 months. Believe it or not some people are taking this stuff seriously.
@BooJoh if that’s true, I wish you nothing but the best and good health.
My family and I have been staying home, virtual learning, quarantine, all that. But we still have to go out once in a while. We wear masks and social distance. Haven’t gotten it. Hope this situation gets better for everyone soon.
First off, these in-store distros are ridiculous. It worked in the early 2000’s but just seems like a dinosaur today. How many people are really heading to stores to get a digital Pokémon and spending another $50-$100 on other stuff as a result? And this continued partnership with GameStop is strange and confusing for Nintendo. The two GameStop’s near me are sad and half empty, with the other half filled with toys and random crap. It’s not a fun place to visit, much less during a global health crisis.
Secondly, the Pokémon Pass app is another dinosaur. It works by picking up the store’s WiFi, so in theory all you have to do it drive up outside the Gamestop (or Target or Best Buy etc) and the app will generate a code for you. So why even bother and make fans jump through those hoops?
Things like this are why Pokémon has gotten a bad reputation this generation. I hope they do an overhaul for the next set of mainline Pokémon games for Switch.
Already have it in shiny in both forms so no loss to me if the UK doesn't get it.
Don’t miss what? There’s nothing to miss. 😉
Even I got myself a little off topic here. My point is, I think people are using the pandemic as an excuse to complain about the method of this distribution, and these people are completely missing the point all together. The distribution is to get people in the store to buy the merch. It’s not a distribution of essential dlc or anything just to be nice to consumers.
I get it, I don’t like going to GameStop either. That place sucks. But if you want this event Pokémon, that’s what you have to do because they want the opportunity to upsell you on the cards.
All that said, be safe out there!
Eh, rather not go out and get a code. I can breed for one and it would mean more to me that if I got it with a code
Actually getting a specific form would be kind of a pain since the evolution is dependent on the nature of the Toxel
Sorry to everyone who spent the time breeding one I guess.
@CosmoXY I only go to GameStop as either a backup or if it is the only choice I personally completely have for physical gaming related things!
@CosmoXY “ But if you want this event Pokémon, that’s what you have to do because they want the opportunity to upsell you on the cards.”
Yeah... Every Gamestop I’ve been to recently are already capped on release-day preorders for Shining Fates and will only receive enough product to fulfill said preorders, you won’t be able to buy SHF products at ALL come the 19th unless you’re extremely lucky.
I already bought a full shiny set on ebay so ill pass
You really don't even have to leave your house to use the app. I've gotten previous Pokemon Pass events via gps spoofing.
@weisske Wait a second, you spent actual money on hacked Pokémon on eBay? Ouch, I hope you didn’t spend much.
In-store codes are an outdated and frankly quite terrible idea in today's environment.
@CosmoXY Promoting a potential conglomeration of people around stores for an exclusive digital product during a pandemic is both stupid and dangerous.
@ianl579 Take a look at post #17 above.
@71nk0 (self-edited to remove sarcasm) It’s just not realistic to continue to shut down all places of business. There are ways to reduce risk of exposure and this digital distribution is relatively safe.
Reminder: this is a free promotional distribution of a relatively easy to get Pokémon. You don’t have to do it. It’s a tactic to promote the launch of a retail product. Skip it if you’re worried about the virus. I know if I’m even going to bother with it I’ll drive by, see if it’s busy in the store (which it won’t be), and decide to go in based on that.
Awesome, since most stores are still closed due to lockdowns. This makes total sense...thanks Nintendo! (*sarcasm). Good thing I already caught a shiny Toxtricity in my own game because I don't have a way to get to an open EB Games right now.
@CosmoXY I don't mean to keep shutting down places just for the sake of it. But come on, this is completely unnecessary. They could just share the codes online or something else.
@71nk0 I’ll just say it again, this distribution is not something they’re doing just to be nice. It’s not a gift just for playing the game. The whole point is to promote the release of new merchandise that they want to get you in the store to buy. It’s as simple as that.
Which game gets which form?
@tadams587 My guess is that it‘ll be locked to Amped Form for both versions, Shining Fates and Shiny Star V, the Japanese set that the former set takes a majority of its cards from, only has the Amped Form available as a Shiny card.
@CosmoXY nah, just 10 quid. Much better than grinding for days per shiny (plus some shiny locked pokemon too )
