We're so glad Meganium is finally getting their time in the spotlight. As the best starter Pokémon that's ever existed, they deserve it. Chikorita's final evolution may be a left-field choice for the face of the upcoming New Pokémon Snap, but we have to say - it's the right one.
Ahead of the 30th April release, Japanese game mag Famitsu has published a bunch of new screenshots and info about the game (h/t to Reddit user Riomegon).
Some of these featured Pokémon and locations have already been seen in earlier trailers and images, but we're not sure we've seen Tangrowth before (or have we? He looks a bit like a bush, maybe he just blended in). There might be more reveals in there, too, but the scans (posted on Reddit by Riomegon) are a bit too fuzzy to tell.
One thing that is clear, however, is that the bit that features Old Pokémon Snap is not an exclusive reveal that the game will be bundled in. Thanks to a helpful translation by CoffeeBard, we know that it's just a section talking about the initial release, the sticker-printing service that ran in Japan alongside the launch, and the fact that the 200 Pokémon included in New Pokémon Snap is much higher than the original's 63.
It looks like some of the new stuff has already been added to the official game website, including the following descriptions:
"Explore beaches, jungles, deserts, and more as you photograph over 200 Pokémon and investigate the mysterious Illumina phenomenon in New Pokémon Snap."
"Pokémon and vegetation in Lental have sometimes been seen to glow. This is known as the Illumina phenomenon, which is unique to the Lental region in New Pokémon Snap."
"At the request of Lental’s own Professor Mirror, you’ll venture from island to island on an ecological survey, floating safely along in your trusty pod, the NEO-ONE, as you photograph Lental Pokémon and their habitats to uncover the truth behind the Illumina phenomenon."
"Professor Mirror will evaluate your photos. Your scores will be based on your subjects’ poses, how large they appear, how directly they’re facing you, and their placement within the frame."
"As you take photos and keep researching, you may get to see Pokémon look and behave in different ways than before."
Do you love Meganium as much as we do? Let us know in the comments below.

"Famitsu Coverage Of New Pokémon Snap Includes New Snaps, More Pokémon"
Ah yes, the floor is made out of floor.
Looking good!
This game looks great. Doesn’t seem like there’s any updates to the gameplay, but that’s fine I guess.
Still waiting on that confirmation that it will support the Labo VR camera.
this year's animal crossing. A fun relaxing game. this game looks right up my alley.
At times like this, I so wish that the Switch had a camera like the Wii U/3DS before it (preferably in one of the Joy-Con).
If I read this right, the article said the original game's bundled into this? Or did the writer mean something else?
Edit: Re-read it, and I just read it wrong.
@HotGoomba I really wanted to go with "New New Pokémon Snap Snaps Show New Pokémon" but can you imagine the confusion
Oh, snap!
....
I'll see myself out.
adds Photographer to resume
200 is a solid number. The original only had 63, which I mean just add a voltorb or something to hit that 64
WARNING! I may SNAP at any time!
...sorry, I couldn't help myself
@KateGray Honestly, that would have been perfect.
@sketchturner Oh cool, Kirby.
VIOLENT VIDEO GAME ALERT!
As a non-reader of Famitsu,
Is it normal for a game still nearly 3 months out to have this much coverage?
or
Is New Pokemon Snap worthy of this much coverage more than most?
or
Is there nothing else big coming out the next 3 months?
I'm assuming they've already covered Monster Hunter Rise? Honestly can't think of any other big game on Xboxen or PS4/5 since most of those seem undated. MLB The Show can't be THAT big in Japan I don't think. 🤷♂️ Ratchet & Clank is a launch window game but it's still undated. And it's giving me Pikmin 3 on Wii U PTSD. 😛
I know it's Pokemon, but it's an on rails picture taker. Though I suppose ACNH did sell over 30 mil and that's basically just an off rails picture taker. 😂
Wouldn't buy it for myself, unless it has Labo VR support, but if either of my kids want it I'd probably check it out. Hopefully by May first vaccinations have gone well enough that I can leave my house again and I don't need another pandemic game.
@HotGoomba @sketchturner You 2 having so many posts next to each other is like some weird vertical slot machine I'm oh so close to winning, but still losing.
I really want this game to be good, the zen chill of Snap would be just ideal right now!
@HotGoomba Every sixty seconds in Africa, a minute passes
What if we combine the never changing main pokemon formula with this? How cool would it be if pokemon showed appropriate behavior in their respective environments (the way they are portrayed in this game and the prequel) in a main Pokemon game? (instead of the usual "mindlessly roaming around waiting to be caught"). That way the camera would be a much more valuable feature.
Those screenshots look hardly any better than the N64 game.
I've been looking forward to a new Snap for years, but man they dropped the ball with the graphics. I hope the actual gameplay makes up for it.
@Prizm ... They are not even close to resemble N64 graphics. I mean, I understand if they don't reach your expectations but there's a huge difference. Even the Pokemon Sword and Shield games are a big step forward over how the N64 games looked.
@Silly_G. it kind of does with the labo camera, don't know if that would that would be what you would want. if the game would even use the feature. but since labo is not a big thing anymore. that may not happen.
@Prizm : You're kidding, right? Have you not seen what N64 graphics look like in the last two decades? 🤪
@roy130390 : Even that is a gross understatement.
The 3DS games looked better than any Pokémon game on N64 and dare I say that they (the Pokémon models anyway) look better than the GameCube games.
The original DS had better graphics than the N64 for crying out loud. Just compare Super Mario 64 to the DS remake, or Mario Kart 64 to Mario Kart DS. No contest. None at all.
@Prizm your eyes must be broken...because it’s not even close to looking the same.

I swear to god this will justify nintendo completely ignoring y'all if this doesn't sell at least 10 million copies after how much y'all been whining for this for years.
@Prizm This is a ridiculous and disingenuous take
@Yoshilapin Well, not really if the game is a half assed effort and the audience responds appropriately. I love the original. I love Pokémon. But that's not a free pass to just throw schlock against the wall and expect fans to just eat it up. No matter how long we've been asking for the game.
@Gravitron Funny enough, Ekans was in the beta version of the game, so had it made into the final cut, the number would've indeed been 64.
@UmbreonsPapa I wouldn't say "expect fans to just eat it up". One could say that any issues a game may have may not bother some people as much as it does others. It all boils down to taste and opinion.
@Silly_G don’t hate on the n64, appreciate
