We're not saying it's because we had nothing better to do, but apparently in 2020 we all collectively tweeted 75% more about video games than we did in 2019. Huh! Weird!
With that big ol' chunk of tweets comes some interesting insight into what we're actually saying with those missives: it seems like Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the biggest topic, ahead of mobile games Fate/Grand Order and Disney: Twisted-Wonderland, both hugely popular in Japan.
Last December's Game Awards was the most-tweeted-about gaming event, in which New Horizons won Best Family Game, and we saw Sephiroth announced as the newest Smash Bros. character.
Whether we're tweeting about them, sharing screenshots, or just patiently waiting for news, the most followed gaming topics included Fortnite, Minecraft, and Animal Crossing again. The "PlayStation" and "Xbox" topics both made it into the top ten, too, but "Nintendo" and "Switch" didn't - possibly because we can't all stand the heartbreak of having new Direct rumours debunked. Sigh.
Meanwhile, it seems like Among Us has brought huge recognition to its most well-known players, as musician and renowned deep-voice-haver @Corpse_Husband cracks the top ten "Most Tweeted About Gaming Personalities" following his streams with U.S. Representatives, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar.
We know we've been guilty of using Twitter to find cute Animal Crossing designs for our islands, but how have you used social media to talk about gaming? Let us know in the comments.

I've played three of those games. Never even heard of 4 of them.
Identity V has Danganronpa characters so yall know I've played that
Slow news day today, Its just been speedruns and stuff like this.
@Snatcher They need to pay the bills somehow, and we read it anyway
Twitter is garbage.
@Kimyonaakuma true.
Nice to see Genshin Impact in the Top 10 Most Tweeted Games, even though it only came out in late September. It's also cool to see Animal Crossing as #1, even though I completely expected that.
@Blooper987
If you don't mind me asking, what are the three games that you've played from this list and are the four you've never heard of before? 🤔
@Snatcher, @Kimyonaakuma
Actually, I would consider it a slow news day if there haven't been any articles posted for 6+ hours (or 9-12 hours). 🤔
@SM3DASislit I've played Animal Crossing, Identity V, and Genshin Impact. (and Fortnite but I forgot LOL)
Never heard of Fate Grand Order, twisted wonderland, knives out, or ensemble stars.
Rather sad to see no Nintendo stuff apart from AC. Business may have been fine... but, in terms of cultural catchet, this year just simply **was not good.**
Wait how are we talking about Corpse too much if he's just in the top 10 talked about gamers I'm legitimately confused by the subtitle
@Alpha-2002 In all fairness, there wasn't any Nintendo stuff other than AC in 2020
About 1,000 of those ACNH tweets are mine.
And I wouldn't have even bought the game if it weren't for the pandemic.
Just like Amazon wouldn't have delivered Ring Fit Adventure an hour ago if the pandemic weren't still ongoing.
@Blooper987
Okay, thanks for letting me know.
I've also played Animal Crossing and Fortnite (even though I haven't played Fortnite since mid-2019). I haven't played Genshin Impact yet (though I'm definitely interested in it), and I have no idea what Identity V is.
I've "heard" of the games you haven't heard of, but I also have little to no idea what those games are either. 🤔
@LilMuku
There were other Nintendo games that were released in 2020, like XC: DE, Clubhouse Games, Paper Mario: Origami King, 3D All-Stars, Mario 35, MK: Live Circuit, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, so I'm confused with your statement. 🤔
speaking of Twitter, a Nintendo Direct was tweeted for 12/1/21 at 6am Pacific (14:00 London time). incoming news about SMB3DW+BF!
@SM3DASislit Remake, board game collection, spin-off, overpriced and incomplete collection of extremely old games, temporary online arcade game, spin-off of a spin-off, and a high quality spin-off
Look, if you're trying to make the case that 2020 was a good year for Nintendo and your evidence is two Mario re-releases and a board game collection, you shouldn't be making that argument
That's like saying 2015 was good for Nintendo because of Pokemon Shuffle and Badge Arcade
@LilMuku I played my Switch plenty last year. Get better taste.
@Nemesis666 Alright well your use of slurs have shown me that your value as a life form is even lower than that of what you'd find floating in your average sewer but, I'll let you become a valid specimen in your own time
I'll still entertain you however since It's obvious you misunderstood my post entirely. The Mario re-releases in question are Mario 35 and 3D All Stars. Yes It's in new packaging, but Mario 35 is just another way of playing Super Mario Bros, granted It's still more inventive and new than 3D All Stars, which is just three super old games that realistically should be on the Virtual Console but sadly the Switch has yet to reach even the Wii's standard.
And I agree, the board game thing is wonderful, I enjoy it a ton. But, I also enjoy Pokemon Cafe Mix, and I wouldn't name that as one of the reasons a console was great any given year.
My opinion has nothing to do with it, I'm talking about the fact that we're at a stage where people are saying the Switch had a great 2020 because of games that, if were released on Wii, would be barely worth mentioning.
Now, and I can't ask this kindly enough, don't ever interact with me ever again. This conversation is over, and I really don't feel ok interacting with someone who thinks slurs are ok to use. Ableism isn't cool.
@Roto13 By "get better taste" do you mean, "enjoy the games I enjoy"? because that's rather arrogant
As it happens I bought most of the bigger releases, and I've been enjoying them at my own pace. Paper Mario and Hyrule Warriors were fun, I still go on Animal Crossing daily.
But, our opinions aren't a factor here. There's a severe lack in first party games on the Switch, that's just a fact. Spin-offs don't really count, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon didn't count as 2015's Pokemon game, it was just a spin-off.
What you're saying is, a lineup's strength is determined by your opinion specifically, which is just insane. I've enjoyed most of 2020's games, but 2020 was objectively a weak year, just like 2018 and 2019 before it.
But sure, feel free to think that ports and spin-offs make a strong release schedule.
@LilMuku
I wasn't sure if you were meaning that Nintendo hadn't released any new games, or games in general in 2020, which is why I made my post. 🤔
If you had put "there wasn't any new Nintendo stuff " instead of "there wasn't any Nintendo stuff", it would been more clear (IMO).
I mean, I was fine with Nintendo's lineup last year, but I know not everyone was. 🤔
I just wanted to let you know, I hope this clears up any confusion. 🤔
