Physical releases of indie games are becoming more and more common these days, especially when it comes to Nintendo Switch, but that hasn't stopped yet another company having a crack at hitting the big time.
Joining the likes of Limited Run Games, Strictly Limited Games, Signature Edition Games, Super Rare Games, Gamefairy and more - blimey - is Premium Edition Games, which has decided to get the ball rolling with the announcement of its first physical game. The announcement arrives in the form of a 'Premium Edition Games Direct', which you can watch above.
As for the game? Well, that'd be Super Blood Hockey, a self-professed "violent homage to classic 8- and 16-bit ice hockey games". Premium Edition Games releases will all launch with (mostly) the same goodies, so expect to find all of this available should you wish to pick up a copy of this debut release:
- Nintendo Switch™ Physical Case and Game
- Double-sided Insert
- Full Color Manual
- A "Special" Trading Card
- A Logo Sticker
- First Prints of the game will have a hand-drawn Full Color Glossy Slipcase by legendary artist Paul E. Niemeyer of Mortal Kombat fame!
You can already pre-order the game on Premium Edition's website for $39.95. Pre-orders close on 22nd September.
Are you a physical collector? Are you somehow keeping up with all of these physical indie releases? Tell us below.

And the Collective of Collectors collectively say, "UUUUGH..."
A violent homage to classic hockey. Implying that it's not already violent...
Premium Edition spared no expense on that YouTube video.
Although I actually wanted a physical copy of A Robot Named Fight, so that's cool.
Awesome Pea Collection, eh maybe, but no interest in the hockey game.
That slipcase art looks as bad as MegaMan 1
Certainly interested, but always worried we'll get another Warned Collectors "take the money and run" incident.
@Paraka Agreed, enough is enough now. I would never say people shouldn't be allowed to make physical releases, but there are too many companies doing it now. I decided I was out when I couldn't get a copy of Hotline Miami collection cause they sold out in a few minutes (probably bought by scalpers).
At least Limited Run give a time window to make an order, but even their prices have started to sneak up from $30 to $35 and even $50 or $60 in some cases.
It has almost got to the stage where people are trying to fix the retro market in advance by creating rare copies of games that will be worth a fortune in 10 years or so. Problem is the more physical games that flood the market like this the more likely collecting won't be worth the money or effort.
If they get the right stuff I might bite!
@Magician
If you're familiar with JP's Switchmania, who's a good source of info for physical releases all things Nintendo Switch, that seems unlikely.
He's just as wary of a Warned Collector's situation as prospective customers, but of course this all depends on him not failing to run a business.
Warned Collector's failed probably because they tried taking orders for multiple different games before even delivering on their first.
This is probably why Premium Edition isn't looking to do their third release until Summer 2021.
Hooray for free market competition!
@Old-Red - My problem, as a collector myself, becomes a priority purchase issue. You're more obligated (for a collector) to focus on boutique publishing when you can. And with many coming through that door I lack the flexibility now to buy some retail games I have been itching to play.
I have not bought a single Nintendo published game since Luigi's Mansion. Not because of lack of funds, but the constant prep for whatever is around the corner that will surprise release before my next check.
Is this game any good?
@RupeeClock @Magician
Also Jeff has been around a long time as a successful publisher of retro game books.
@Toshiro_Baloney I didn't think too much of it. It's a pretty shallow experience and with all the blood flying around I found it frustrating to focus on the puck. It's a gimmick game that works best in short burst with two players. It's fun for about half an hour.
@Toshiro_Baloney I have similar feelings to @chickje on this game. Its OK and fun for half an hour but I had forgotten I owned it until I saw this article! Don't know if there have been any updates to it since I last played, but I also found the CPU opposition really hard to beat (and the game wasn't enjoyable enough to make me want to put in the time to 'git gud'). The NHL games on the Mega Drive are still much better than this. Can't see how anyone could justify $40 for a physical copy. I paid about £4 or something digitally.
Worth noting though that the violence/blood levels can be turned down in the menu if you find it too distracting.
I love super blood hockey. If you like old NES ice hockey, it’s fun.
Not enough to double dip. But certainly worth a play if you got 1-3 friends to play.
It’s a great game. It’s often on sale for about £4. I’m not sure if it’s worth buying a physical copy. For £4 mind it’s awesome .
This is funny, bloody 8bit hockey with a career mode and RPG elements where you act as general manager of the team and train your current roster through various means, as well as sign new and better players as you win. It’s tough, but definitely doable.
I am a digital gamer almost exclusively so these physical releases never do much for me, however I think it's great that they bring extra exposure to these releases. I will say though it's crazy that many times a $5-10 Digital game goes for 5x the price in physical form
make them first then sell them this vague release date go fffffffffff of
I had no idea that was a real game...
You mean, regular hockey?
Hmmm, how can I say what I mean diplomatically. Ah yes. The only way is up after these releases!
I'll probably get A Robot Named Fight.
@HIGHscores85 dude. That was just brutal. Wish I could come up with insults as good as that.
Why is it that Physical Indie Publishers can't help but choose the absolute most obscure, uninteresting games possible? I want prints and reprints of Indie gems like Owlboy, Furi, Moonlighter, Chasm, Jet Lancer, Hyper Light Drifter, Axiom Verge, Children of Morta... I could go on and on.
Instead it's Bloody Hockey, PigeonDev Collection and A Robot Named Fight on their agenda. Ridiculous! Why would I want to pay 40-50 a pop on such garbage? I'll spend that much money on quality games instead, thank you very much.
They need to pick up some good out of print games from other companies. Like River City Girls, Mighty Switch Force, Blasphemous etc. Kinda sick of these new companies popping up just to release some random crap.
@MeowMeowKins @Tempestryke
You... disapprove of hockey?
@COVIDberry not disapprove, it's just a bit violent. I mean, I adore rugby, and that's violent to a whole other degree (why don't they wear helmets?)
Did i just see .. naked showering? I am sure it will be pixelated
@COVIDberry Joke just went right over your head huh?
