Koei Tecmo Europe and developer Gust Studios have announced a sequel to Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & The Secret Hideout coming to Switch (and PS4 and Windows PC) "this Winter".
Described as a direct sequel, Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy sees Ryza return as the protagonist, the first character in the history of the long-running RPG Atelier franchise to take on the hero role in two successive titles, according to the official PR for the game. Check out the Japanese trailer above for a look at the battle system, a handful of environments and other details.
While the game didn't feature in the Western showcases, it was one of a number of games highlighted in the Japanese broadcast, which clocked in at around four minutes longer than the Western equivalent. A teaser site for the game went live during the broadcast is set to reveal more details on the 29th July 2020.
Here are a few screenshots we grabbed from the presentation:
How many of the Atelier games have you got under your belt? Looking forward to this one? Let us know below.

That's interesting news. Ryza was my first game in this series and I really enjoyed it, though I haven't quite finished it yet. Guess I'd better handle that before the inevitable Western release of the sequel.
Why didn't they just show this to us in the western direct?
I wonder how the first game is? It look ok from the trailers and the gameplay I watched. Just your standard JRPG? Just asking.
@N8tiveT3ch I wouldn’t say the Atelier games are particularly standard at all. The battling is an afterthought, your main objectives are to craft things, usually before a time limit. In many ways, they share more DNA with Rune Factory than your bog-standard JRPG.
Not counting the roms and images, I still only have Nelke and plenty to do therein. Like I've often said, it proved a surprisingly fitting introduction to the series since a lot of it beyond the town management mechanic plays like Atelier Marie on steroids. But I'm in the market for as many Atelier games as Switch can possibly get.
@Solaine it feels like a safe guess that Koei just didn't prepare an English trailer in time.
And I mean, good for those who now claim to have taken more interest in the Japanese Partner Showcase, but a part of me kinda dreads their reactions if/when the next one comes out in the west with Sakuna and Ryza 2 trailers making up half of it.😅
Really enjoyed the first Ryza. Hope they adjust the battle system a bit. It was so fast that it degraded into button-mashing at times, and the CC system was harsh enough to effectively punish item use, so your battle progress felt quite divorced from your alchemy progress - quite the opposite of other Atelier games I've played. Still, there was plenty of stuff to really enjoy, and with a few tweaks the sequel could be great.
Looks rather good to be honest. Still wonder why it was only on the Japanese direct. Most likely won't release in the west any time soon
Not my favourite Atelier game but just like Fried Chicken; even the bad ones are still pretty good.
Oh hell yeah more Atelier Thighza
@Solaine maybe no localization schedule yet?
I’d like combat slowed down a little so I’m not having to avoid trying to use the great items I’ve made in order to actually get a turn. I feel like the alchemy and combat system are working against each other more than complementing one another. Also, I’d like to see the font size for battles increased a little bit, it was really, really hard to see what was going on in handheld on switch. Oh, and either more character development in the main story or events like in previous games that I’m not having to pay extra for...
With all that, I think Ryza 2 could be even more fun than the first.
At first I was super excited, but then I remember why I stopped playing these games...no English dub!!! BOOOOO!!!
If the English dub hadn't been so good in the old games, I wouldn't be so upset, but it's really not the same without out, IMHO.
This was easily the most exciting announcement for me. Really enjoyed Atelier Ryza and I've run out of other Atelier games to play now so I'm pretty keen. There are a few areas of Ryza that could use some fleshing out and refining so I look forward to seeing how they've gone about it.
I just started buying the Atelier games on Switch a few weeks ago. My copy of Ryza hasn't arrived yet but I'm glad to see it did well enough to warrant a sequel. Hopefully the sequel is dubbed this time.
@nhSnork i see, that might be it. Thankyou very much
@nessisonett Thanks for the info👍and here I thought Nintendo life was about salt.
@N8tiveT3ch Hahaha, no bother, just avoid the articles with 150+ comments and we can actually talk about games 😂😂
For me this was the best announcement easy, instant buy!
@Solaine @nhSnork @Tharsman - Game is getting a worldwide release this winter. Doubtful to be at the same time but will be within months.
According to Koei Tecmo America they dont have anything to show until next week.
@N8tiveT3ch @nessisonett Most of the articles are quite civil and a good time to hang out and chat in. Though there has been more controversies of late. Most of us just want to enjoy Nintendo and gaming as a whole.
Definitely give Atelier games a go. They have their own little niche corner and if you can get through the early periods and in the groove of synthesis it becomes a very charming experience.
Nice! I’ve been waiting for this announcement. I quite enjoyed the first one so looking forward to the sequel. I just hope NA gets more physical copies this time around. I expect it will, now that Ryza 1 is the best-selling game in the series.
@stinkyx I feel this. Used to be really into Blazblue and then 4 entries in they stopped dubbing and the cast felt like different characters
@DrJoson Oh no! I just started BlazBlue! Maybe I’ll see if I can just switch to Japanese voices sooner than later so I can get used to it.
Well that's ironic... usually the western Directs have the bigger announcements, but this time they got really lucky with some other ones, huh.
Well, Atelier Ryza was the big AAA departure for the series, so this sequel is like their BoTW 2, right? Then in that case, this looks exciting
The first one was a great game!! And for those interested, it's on sale on the eShop now for 40% off.
Ryza was great but i do not like that she is the main character again. I'm still looking forward to it. Lulua and ryza were a step in the right direction after the previous atelier games were not so great.
@XenoShaun It looks alright, what would you say are its best features?
Pretty much the best announcement today, really.
I'd love to try an Atelier game, but god knows where to start. Also, it's Tecmo Koei, who have some of the worst DLC practices, so I'm not sure if I trust them?
@RainbowGazelle I started with the first Ryza myself, as I’d read that it was a good jumping-on point for the series. You’re right that you can skip the DLC though.
@N8tiveT3ch it's great. It might not be everyone's cup of tea though. It's an rpg, but the systems were totally different from what I was used to. It's super pretty on Switch btw, one of the best looking games...some environmental stuff is basic and stiff, but it all comes together in a really pretty way with beautiful colors and lighting. I'd recommend reading up on the crafting and stuff to see if it is appealing or not.
The thicc thighs are strong with this one.
I had a great time with the first game! Totally want this one!
Why does she have one less stocking now? And does that mean that she'll now lose an item of clothing with each game? So many questions.
