One of the highlights during yesterday's EA Play Live event was when Respawn Entertainment announced it would be bringing its popular free-to-play battle royale Apex Legends to the Nintendo Switch this Fall.
Although we're yet to see any footage of this version, game director Chad Grenier assures fans it's shaping up nicely - even if it has been a big challenge to bring to the hybrid platform. It'll also include motion control support and gyro aim functionality.
Here's his full comment about the upcoming Nintendo release, during an interview with GameSpot:
It’s a big challenge. We’ve been working on it for awhile. It’s not without its challenges, but I’ll say it’s looking really good and running very well. Obviously it’s a different platform, and we have to make some changes to the game to get it to run there. It’s got motion controls, so we’re supporting that, so that takes some time to support – the gyro aim functionality. It’s a lot of work, but it’s coming along nicely. We’re testing it at this point, making sure that it’s good to go. It’s worth it. We’re huge fans of Nintendo, so I’m personally really excited to just bring a game to Switch and I can take it on the go and play it when I’m with my kids or whatever.
On top of motion controls, Apex Legends on Switch features the new cross-platform support. Yep, in addition to being able to play the game on the go, you'll be able to squad up with your friends on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Origin and Steam.
Are you looking forward to dropping into the battlefield when this title arrives on the Switch? Tell us down below.

Thanks EA for this support. Hoping to see more from the company. I know many complain about EA for being EA. But i love to see more support from them.
EA is a horrible company. Don't buy their games.
Yay! Good news. I love this shooter
@psychoBrew I mean... you technically CAN play this game without spending any money at all!
@psychoBrew
Thankfully this is free so I can play and at least try it out. I've heard it's good and if it runs well on Switch, we should give it a chance.
As good as Apex Legends is able to look, I suppose.
If you only own a switch, this is good news.
@The-Chosen-one Yes, I agree, this is the support the Switch needs... More support the better, it's ok if we get an odd dud game (Fifa 21 Legacy Edition) if we also get good games from them...
Just pick and choose what you want and ignore the rest..
@psychoBrew Apex is free soooo
Mass Effect trilogy is the only reason I'd give EA money. until then I may try out Apex legends
@psychoBrew You don't have to buy it to play it.
That's how fast you can see an opinion based on nothing.
@psychoBrew but but but burnout!!!!
Cool. I'd be more surprised the day I see a company saying their game looks and runs absolutely awful on a system lol!
Respawn says Apex Legends "looks terrible" and "runs like s***"" would be newsworthy.
The porting team of Outer Worlds said something similar to this about their game and it wasn't the whole truth.
@Coach_A
IIRC, that was the publisher stating the promised "720p handheld and 1080p docked" for TOW on Switch, not the developers themselves. Respawn themselves--the developers--saying this gives me more confidence.
@PlayedNSlayed
Mine is dead space trilogy
@JR150 the developers said they could port anything to Switch with confidence though
@psychoBrew Respawn is EA's best developer, deserved to get a success with Apex as their high rated single player games didn't do that well.
Cross play, motions controls... So far, everything sounds great.
Now EA, let us please decide if we prefer resolution over performance (1080/30, I guess), or the opposite (720/60), and we'll be more than happy.
Respawn is EA's best developer, so i don't doubt that they say about Switch version.
Just try Titanfall 2 on standard current gen consoles from 2013.
It also had one of the most praised single player for years.
I bought all Respawn games. Pure quality all of it. Their newest single player were "Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order".
Titanfall 2 is hopefully being ported too. Both offline and online kicks ass in that game.
EA "challenge everything" or could they not keep up with themselves?
When Apex first came out I ran the 8 gig pre installed version, laughing saying well that's the Switch version right there (it was potatoe but ran smoothly) so I already know the base line.
Edit: will the FoV slider remain intact? makes a massive difference competitively.
@DeclanS98 LOL. Free. No game is free. Don't be a sucker.
We will be a judge of that! Show us the footage!
So it looks and plays as well as FIFA Legacy Edition? Bring Titanfall and Star Wars to the Switch you PoS game company.
@locky-mavo I'd buy a Rogue Leader HD any day!
@Ventilator EA sucks. Nothing about them deserves success.
@psychoBrew ???? You can download and play Apex for free????? Are you high
It gonna lie, Obsidian said the same about The Outer Worlds ... and look at that mess. So glad I paid £45 for that!
@aresius I'd be onboard for that too
@Coach_A Outer Worlds is far from perfect on the Switch. The Xbox One version I've been playing look better, but I'm happy with it. I can play this game anywhere, it runs well even if the graphics look a bit suspect and over time it'll be improved.
We have to start changing our perspection of the Switch, it isn't a traditional gaming console. Nintendo is now making gaming devices, hence why we have the two Switch systems and the rumored "TV-Only" or TV-Only Pro" model.
Updates will be incremental, but will offer improvements. The Switch 2 will be similar to Apple releasing the second generation iPad, there will be big gains and performance improvements to show how this device has arrived.
The only difference, Nintendo won't update the specs every year, it might be a 3-4 year cycle; could be shorter depending on the completion of the family. All your games will "switch" across these devices, especially if you have an OG or Lite plus TV. This is how I see the Switch, Switch Lite (iPhone), OG Switch (iPad) and "rumored TV-only" (Apple TV, which it'll be better than it).
Well, if they announce Madden 21 and a Mass Effect trilogy, I'll break my long standing EA blackout and preorder them. They put their foot forward, so will I.
I've been buying EA games used or heavily discounted. The former works better since they never get the money for it. Haven't bought a season pass or game service since 2016.
Gonna be interesting to see. Adding gyro aiming is reason enough for me to download and check it out. Played a fair bit on PS4 and then kinda trailed off of it. If they ever add cross progression I'd be more inclined to play.
@DeclanS98 sure and then you’re stuck with a small set of “classes” (why does an fps have a class system anyway?) until you fork over or play for some time (a lot, comparatively) to unlock more. And some of the class specials are just useless, making the game have a p2w element to it. So no, it’s not really free. I agree with the other opinions in this thread saying the same, this game is horrible and I very much doubt it will look and play well at all, especially given fortnite has a substantially lower poly budget and it looks and runs like crap on the switch.
@tekknik It's quite literally a game you can download and play for free. I'm sure you wouldn't criticise Warframe for not being able to play every frame from the start.
Need to know if it's cross progression though, then I'll be set
@psychoBrew why is EA a horrible company to the extent that one should not purchase their products?
I’ve seen no evidence of why a person should take this stance.
@the_beaver would be great to add that as option in settings it works great for Rocket League
I think we should take EA games coming as a good thing which I do, haters gonna hate, make your own choice
We couldn't get Titanfall (2) to run well on the switch but Apex Legends runs fine...? Ok.
they said the same thing about outer worlds " it runs well" while it's not the same company, i think people must have the lowest possible expectations since it could all be bs.
I played this game a lot on pc. So i am definitely going to try this out. Just hoping for cross progression. I can also trust Respawn pretty well they same to care about this game.
The buzzwords "Really good" and "Really well" have been used so many times I don't trust it anymore. They're going to have to start giving actual specs at this point, especially for competitive games such as this. If it runs at 30fps, you might as well not even try, especially if they're pitting you against players with 2-6x more frames than you
@psychoBrew this game is free lol! Go back to reddit
I think it is doing Respawn good to learn developing for handhelds. Making only for similar spec consoles makes them lazy and they start taking things for granted whereas including a tablet in development shows they have more skills and are willing to adapt to other areas when needed to.
2 Questions:
are there modes where you only have one life?
Is there player vs event modes?
@CodyMKW Just means he's a better player. And FPS scientifically does affect gameplay. Especially when it comes to input delay/response time and how well you can see opponents
@TimboSlice I played this on PC, so I'll answer best I can. Apex Legends is a battle royale with 60 players in teams of three. Once you're eliminated, you can actually come back if a teammate retrieves your banner and respawns you at a respawn station (provided you don't leave the game). However, once all three teammates are eliminated, game over.
Haven't seen a PvE mode as I play this occasionally, but they sometimes do limited time events. Two I liked were Shadowfall, which is solo battle royale, except when you're eliminated, you stay in game and become a shadow causing trouble for other players. The other I like was Winter Express, pretty much king of the hill with round respawns. Both of these were limited, but I enjoyed them a bit more than the main mode.
Hope this helps.
@Sunsy thanks!
Happy to try it then (just hate infinite life team death matches).
Loving Warface but could use a change up
@DeclanS98 By this logic a game that allows you to play any amount of time then charge a lot to continue is still f2p. Every f2p game is free, yet p2w is still a thing. And I don’t play warframe, but if payment is required to play on the same level as those not paying, even if the benefit is slight, it’s not free. further your logic misunderstands the purpose of it being f2p. You need players to make your game playable, especially in a BR. to get players in you make it free, so by you playing you’re actually donating time to help them create the game environment for others to play in the first place. so, no, not free. if you enjoy the game then cool, don’t be blinded by fanboyism though
if it's another The Outer Worlds, then they can keep this game for themselves...
Is this game still heavily active? I can’t help but feel publishers of these live service battle competitive multiplayer games port onto the Switch when updates are slowing down or the game’s popularity is waning. When Overwatch had released on the Switch, the game had started to drop from its lofty heights.
EA is no different than other companies they have their hits and misses so jump of the hate ban wagon is already getting old and not many are riding it anymore, so grow up. Glad EA is getting their stuff together special seen them on steam with an finally releasing a great , if not, the best Need for speed game yet "Heat". I know this will be a great port so far they all have been even with minor issues nothing has ever been game breaking =:3
@tekknik and you don't be blinded by whiny articles or blogs by sore losers online. The second they see microtransactions they immediately assume is p2w or not free. Most if not all battle royale games have only offer cosmetics an no actual boost that give you an edge over anyone and most games like warframe let you grind for most equipment without paying. Maybe next time do some actual research that's not a whiny article from a lowlife player or actually play the damn game, before trying to insulint others or making assumptions for it only makes you look and sound stupid =
@Quix who’s insulting who? I’ve played the game and in apex you’re not just buying skins, you’re buying classes. Some classes specials are more useful than others, and it just so happens that the free characters are basically useless. CoD has the same problem, though less of it since you can skip the grind by paying, plenty of games do this. to take offense at this fact is fanboyism. so you also shouldn’t be blinded.
Madden is such a no brainier it's idiocy that it's not out on Switch. The PS3 version is probably as easy as it gets to port with updated roster.
@tekknik reading comprehension is far more important than spelling, I never said all and your just assuming they are bad. Again is obvious you hardly know or play most of this games to begin with =
@psychoBrew
Well the game that this thread is about is a free game. No purchase necessary. So while I am certainly no fan of ea, maybe hold off on the must hate them at all cost schtick on this one my friend.
Sick of people just saying "f*** EA" all the time. We ask for 3rd party support and now we are actually getting it, people are not happy.
Yes EA arent the best company and they don't have the best track record in terms of micro transactions and other stuff. But at the end of the day, they have IPs to a lot of good games including battlefield, star wars and others. To have them on to the switch would be a blessing. I am a big fan of apex and to be able to play it in bed would be great. Can't wait, thanks for the support EA.
@NicolausCamp I'm gonna try to minimize my spending on this game because I'm only gonna try to get one good skin
@Quix You’re not making any sense and running around insulting people. (Mods where are you now? you’re were quick to jump on me yet someone calling another stupid is ok?) Where did I say all (context is unclear, what all?), you’ve yet to refute any of my claims, and I guess I have 2x 2080 super for artistic value?
@bigboss313 One thing you should understand is that EA is not doing this out of the love for switch players, they’re doing it because the switch sales numbers have gotten their attention. Then, they are required by law to increase profits so therefore we end up with EA IP on switch. EA didn’t wake up one day and say “Let’s show switch some love, cause now suddenly we like them”, they did it because they looked at a platform sales numbers chart. Either way, you’re right in that we do finally get EA IP on switch.
@tekknik I'm bored you bore me, you stop making sense halfway so I stopped half way. I'm done have yourself a dandy life =
@Quix yea i’m sure that’s exactly what it is. either your a shill or a child.
