Masahiro Sakurai likes to play video games just as much as his fanbase, but due to his role as the director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he has to exercise extreme caution nowadays.
Even though he plays "a lot" of games in his spare time, in his latest Famitsu column this week, Sakurai explains how it's got to the point where he can no longer allow people to "find out" the types of games he's playing. He also has to show some restraint on social media and says he can no longer attend events highlighting specific games because of possible DLC speculation.
Here's a translation, courtesy by Oni_Dino of Nintendo Everything:
I normally play a ton of games, but if people find out what kinds of games I’m playing, they have a tendency to start making a fuss over, ‘Did Sakurai just confirm so-and-so for Smash?!’ These misunderstandings spread like wildfire particularly in countries abroad. I have to be extremely careful, so I don’t write about what I’m playing on Twitter, and I have to decline appearing on TV shows or programs that highlight a specific game.
As noted, his followers can get carried away - particularly the ones abroad, and then misunderstandings spread like wildfire. Even when he tweets a picture from Smash Bros. it can result in ongoing speculation. Just last week, for example, he shared an image of Samus and her gunship, and well...as you can imagine, some people thought it was a sign.
So, what did we learn today? It's that Sakurai enjoys playing and talking about games, and it doesn't necessarily mean everything he says or does is a hint about the DLC fighters coming to Smash Bros. Ultimate in the future.

Sometimes I can’t help but feel like the poor guy has basically sacrificed his whole being for this series. I honestly wouldn’t mind if he backs away from the series for several years after he wraps up Ultimate’s DLC. The guy deserves a life.
I think he needs to take the Ed Boon approach, and just respond with sarcasm.
CrazyFan69: Sakurai posted a pic of Samus, Master Chief confirmed!
Sakurai: Yeah definitely...
Obviously he is playing pre release code of Last of Us 2 on his PS5 Dev kit. Duuuh.
At this point smash characters' guessing is so out of control I'm surprised is not trolling all the way.
Sharing every game he play, retweeting every game related news and then just enjoy the fans burning themselves with their theories and speculations.
@ReaperExTenebris Fair point, if he trolled as I said then we would have ten articles of speculations and rumours here on NL everyday XD;;;
At this moment the game element to Smash is predicting who’s the next character to be added. I get the feeling 90% of the fan base doesn’t actually boot the game itself up any more.
Has Sakura actually given any DLC hints at any point in time since Smash 4? Other than giving us a sneak peek on a Nintendo Direct or two, I don't think he actually ever does give any hints of any kind, people just assume he does. Smash fans really need to back off and give the man some space to be himself and enjoy his life! As hype as i am for the DLC packs, i really hope he can get finally gets some well deserved peace once Smash Ultimate is done getting DLC.
@Chibi_Manny what about those chairs in the background of the smash bros direct, that confirmed Waluigi for Smash!
I mean... they could just tell us already. At this point I don't understand the secrecy around it. So many characters that seemed like long shots are already in.
Really, the secrecy is only necessary if the characters are so stupidly far fetched that it warrants its own announcement. Like Master Chief, Kratos, Goku, Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, and Crash Bandicoot or something. Outside of that and a few others, just let us know already
To be honest..... part of the fun of Smash is guessing the next characters...
So.... I don’t care.... I’ll keep buying Smash and it’s DLCs until the day I die
@AggravatedRobber Ah, yes. The good ol' "rich people are immune to constant, unrelenting harassment" idea. Says a lot about you.
@AggravatedRobber I find this "poor Sakurai" nonsense a bit over the top.
He had a sore hand once.
At this point I can't tell whether people really take every drop of water he spills as a hint, their perception of reality got damaged somewhere, or they don't have anything meaningful to do with their lives.
Speculation is fun but this is way out of control.
Has anyone noticed how Sakurai deliberately wrote this in his ‘Famitsu Column’, which just so happens to be an anagram of ‘Infamous Cult M’?
It’s clear from this hard-as-nails evidence that the whole Smash Bros. serious is just a vehicle to induct us into ‘The Cult of Masahiro’, and that the remaining DLC characters will actually be our immortal souls, downloaded directly into the game.
:;(∩´﹏`∩);:
I can see this. Seeing as he's played Persona 5 but likely didn't want to say anything about it because he didn't want speculation of that game hitting the Switch going around since it likely never will.
The only winning move is to not play.
Poor, poor, poor Sakurai San. Such a perished and punished life. Sometimes I like to pause in Smash Bros and get beaten to a pulp, contemplating Sakurai's suffering. Such a wretched life. I hope he gets the recognition and maybe some bread for the great pain he suffers as he toils for the entire gaming of humanity.
And this all just because a too big part of smash community has the IQ of a rock and is toxic like hell (too big doesn't mean all FYI)
@PBandSmelly worse, they are way older than 12 (often even above 20) and yes indeed toxic.
Fans ruin everything
@MrGawain funny that you say that. I played for a while at launch and then have not picked it up until recently. It has been a fun rediscovery for me!
Just pass it over sakurai. You did really Great work with every smash Bros. Maybe better for him to focus on new or other projects.
@PBandSmelly it’s not just toxic 12 year olds on Twitter - Donald Trump is on there too and he’s way older than that.
Twitter?
Birds go tweet.
ANGRY BIRDS CONFIRMED FOR SMASH!
@PBandSmelly I mean, remove the age limit and you just described fandoms in general, not merely Twitter.
@PBandSmelly goku
So because a bunch of people are super excited for his game and like to chat about who the next character could be (most developers would do gross things to get the kind of free advertising this game gets) I'm supposed to feel terrible for this multi multi millionaire because he makes the decision to log into social media and read these comments.
He seems like a chill guy, I doubt he said this in a way where he wanted pity from anyone, it's a nice problem to have and everyone blaming anyone in here looks a bit ridiculous.
@thesilverbrick I recall his medical issues being detailed a couple of years ago (I think? I have no concept of time) and he still didn’t take any time off. As an individual I do remain quite concerned for him actually.
@Wargoose He's basically already done that with his "rules" about what characters can and can't be in, lol
Lol, the top tweet on the link is someone speculating about Metroid on Switch.
I've never understood how some make those leaps in the first place. I mean, it's fun to speculate who the next DLC characters will be. But never in a million years would I just automatically assume anything based on a game a developer is playing
Gah... people are stupid.
It’s like the excitement is gone, contrived, or forced because these people are hallow, empty shells with nothing else to live for... even when they don’t really care anymore, their dead zombie corpses go on (and on) spreading rumors and speculating in some kind of revolting posthumous rigor mortis self programming...
He should fully embrace his inner troll and just post every stray thought he has about any game. Keep the fans awake at night.
@Wargoose it wasn't the chairs, it was the plant next to the chairs that was the actual hint, the chairs were just a distraction lol
@Manah did you say "drops of water"?! Eddy from Fluidity confirmed for Smash?!
But seriously, as fun as some of this are, people do take it to far, is a joke that toxis fans have take way to seriously to the point where they feel entitled about it, like the Geno death threats and stuff. I would not blame Sakurai at all if he decides to pass the torch on to someone else after he is done with this Smash, it be his Ultimate retirement from this series as this truly is his most Special Ultimate accomplishment.
"particularly the ones abroad"
i.e - americans ;p
This guy literally can't open his mouth without complaining about something.
Yeah, you've got such a hard life, buddy.
Sakurai said he has to be careful what he says about specific games otherwise people, especially abroad start thinking it's a hint about Smash fighters. He said he can't even appear on TV about specific games.
Don't you people get it?! TV....being careful what you say....abroad....it's all obvious references to P4. He's dropping hints! He didn't mention anything about the "unbearable situation" so it's probably not Teddy. I'm guessing it's Chie. Makes sense, we already got Joker, and in the Dancing subseries Chie has a lot more physical moves, so it's a perfect match and fits in with some of Atlus's hints over the last few months. It's all so clear to me now!
I think Sakurai should unplug for a while.
Stop reading reactions from people. Just enjoy what you're doing.
I find it interesting that people just can’t wait for official announcements.
I can't blame him for keeping silent on what games he's played. Personally, I think the fans need to calm down and respect Sakurai's privacy, after all we can't expect him to suddenly announce which fighter he will be adding into the roster. He has to take into account which fighters are acceptable to be in the game, not only that but he also needs to make sure that the fighter is as accurate as possible before inclusion.
Sakurai caught watching porn, Mia Khalifa confirmed for Smash.
Why is he so worried about what a bunch of kids speculate on the games he plays?
@SSJW he can set his account to only show him messages from people he follows.
People are going to speculate anyways. What does he expect? Let the people be disappointed.
@idrawrobots I doubt he cares about speculation , but when his email and various feeds get spammed with ***** who think they cracked the code its gonna get annoying.
This would not be newsworthy aside from the extraordinary devotion and work ethic Sakurai displays in his work, only to be met with ungrateful vitriol and harassment by fans who have no better way to vent their bottled up emotions.
Social media has cultivated by design a toxic environment of negativity that we somehow have decided our society should now revolve around.
It really sucks how much the cult of celebrity has taken over gaming. Dev teams are ignored and team leaders/producers/directors can’t say or do anything with it being picked apart and often devolving into hatred. Gamers complain about canned statements or suits rather than gamers making games but when a dev just wants to be a gamer they can’t because people think there must be some hidden meaning.
@thesilverbrick I can't even live without playing a game myself. Honestly, I would say that he should really get a vacation, or something... When he gets the chance to. Remember that time while he went to work with a whole IV? Ouch...
