Joining up with your friends in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can be a lot of fun, especially as you explore their islands, gather up resources that are new to you, and see how differently you've tackled the design aspect of the game. Things can dry up pretty quickly, though, with a lack of real multiplayer options slowly but surely dampening the experience.
Aside from chatting, flinging Reactions at each other, and running around in circles trying to hit each other with your nets, there isn't actually all that much that two or more players can get up to. Being able to kick a ball about or play little minigames would make a world of difference, but it seems like that just wasn't meant to be.
Fear not, though, because Kit and Krysta, hosts of Nintendo's very own YouTube show, Nintendo Minute, have presented a video going over a couple of ideas that could spark some creative solutions for you at home. You can give it a watch above - you'll see a nice game of hide and seek using the in-game Timer item, as well as a treasure hunt game using custom-made tiles on the ground as clues.
If you're struggling to come up with ways to have fun with your friends, perhaps you can use these ideas to come up with similar games on your own island.
Make sure to share any games or other ideas you have in the comments below for others to try!

I'm sure the rest of the Animal Crossing community is with me when I say, WE NEED MORE THINGS TO DO WITH FRIENDS.
Suggestion for hide and seek... have the seeker look at their phone screen (like Critterpedia) while counting down so they have no idea which direction the hiders go
So far I haven't tried the multiplayer..
First idea..make friends..
That puzzle game from the 3DS would've been nice.
I am surprised Nintendo hasn't implemented more multiplayer stuff to do in Animal Crossing. But then again, I'm not.
The game is sorely missing the island tour minigames from New Leaf.
My friends never have their islands open. I don't blame them, because opening my island for them disables local multiplayer and several other functions central to how the game works. In other words, the limited multiplayer isn't the issue because I can't ever make use of it at all. The only thing that has worked is downloading community designs.
The first comment on that youtube video pretty much sums it up, "Protendo
When Nintendo directly acknowledges that New Horizons has nothing to do during online play"
I am hoping they add some multiplayer content in future updates, because visiting friends is fun, but you are really limited in what you can do
Kit and Krysta's videos are always so refreshing. I also like how you can tell they try very hard not to swear or to reference 18+ stuff.
@Seananigans well the welcome amiibo stuff did come like a year or so after new leaf game came out.
but yes, would be nice for them to give update with minigames!
Multiplayer? Homie don't play dat; I'll manage on my own, thank you
Nintendo Minute is amazing. Was very fun to watch them play together.
It’s like I went into the design centre in the clothing shop, and was really disappointed to discover that unless you have a creator ID or the other it literally is useless. My wife and I are loving the game, but online is truly rubbish.
I wish that tortimer’s island will return even if it only consists of the games. Those games were really fun and gave me things to do with friends in animal crossing.
"mine is pink"
Girl, that's me too.
Please understand.
multiplayer is quite boring a bit
I haven't played online yet because the 2 weeks I had online I couldn't quite figure it out.
And I haven't played offline multi-player yet b/c the 3 other people w/ Switch accounts in my house can't be bothered.
And none of them have started playing single player yet b/c of the oh so stupid 1 console - 1 island limitation.
It's kind of amazing this game reviews as well as it does. Sure, give it a 9 out of 10 for all it does right with single player, but you have to deduct 1 point for the messed up multi-player and console limitation.
I enjoy this game deeply, but the multiplayer functionality is just a disgrace all around. Why are there no activities to do with other players? And, for that matter, why does everyone have to stop what they're doing and stare at the screen for minutes at a time whenever anyone arrives or departs your island?
Sort of like with Pokemon, I feel like Nintendo only slides on basic stuff because there's no real competition putting a fire under their rear ends.
But I shouldn't surprised. Splatoon/Splatoon 2 were the same way: incredibly fun and well-optimized experiences that got basic things on the multiplayer front really, really wrong.
Visit your friends during a fishing derby and you compete against each other on catching the most fish in three minutes.
This video was kinda sad. It was like Nintendo admitting that the online mode is pretty lackluster. All my friends and I do is visit each other's shops. Of fish together when it's raining. And no one opens their island anymore because every time someone joins you have to sit through that cut scene...
And gosh darn it, I still need mums! I havea 5 star island and Nooks Cranny is updating tomorrow but no mums!
I don't think it was sad. Of course multiplayer mode could have had built-in mini-gamish features, but I feel the aim of this video was to show how creative you can be and create your own fun (plus the game is only 1 month old and we now "for sure" new content is coming).
What you're asking is as if Lego sold their bricks with a board game bundled up with them.
@echoplex Ignoring the fact that Lego has made boardgames this is not an accurate comparison at all.
The previous entry had specific minigames in it for multiplayer activites. These might be added later to Horizons but people feel they should be in there now, and I'm inclined to agree. It's more like Lego previously selling sets that came with instructions on how to build a fire engine and a race car by combining your set with a friends before. But the new set now doesn't have red bricks or wheels and somehow cannot be combined with your friends identical set but hey you could hide a Lego brick in your room and see if your friends can find it?
