Since Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched last month, we've seen plenty of wonderful designs, islands and funny moments created by fans of the game. Despite all of that, we still never expected to see something quite like this.
As spotted by Eurogamer, a Reddit user going by the name of tybat11 has set up WeedCo, a weed removal service which can be called upon by Animal Crossing: New Horizons players. It probably sounds like we're joking, but this is an actual, real thing that's happening; demand has reached such a point that there's now an online booking form.
No payment is required for the service, although tips are appreciated, and any bookings will ensure that your island becomes beautifully weed-free. tybat11 shared a brilliant video to Reddit showing how new employees are taught on the job; to pass, a potential employee must expertly pick weeds amongst other flowers and look for any that might be hiding behind trees or cliffs. The result is a position at the company and even a uniform.
You can even apply to join the company yourself if you're interested. tybat11 says that you can send them a 30-second clip demonstrating your weeding skills to be considered - and yes, you'll even get your own WeedCo uniform.
What a wonderful, unique way to enjoy your time with the game. Nice job, tybat11. We love it!

I know that everyone is free to play the game how they want but c'mon, this is getting a little bit embarrassing.
I kind of prefer to do it myself. It doesn't take that long, plus I can sell them or hold onto them for crafting.
Edit: I should add though that I've kind of been wanting to start a flower breeding business. Any flowers you want, including blue or gold roses, I'll give you or breed if I don't have any in stock. I think it'd be really fun.
@Marxally I don't see a problem, they wouldn't be doing it if there wasn't demand.
I keep weeds off my own island though, its not too hard.
this is hella cool! my new leaf town looked abismal with weeds and i was too lazy to clean em up
What a cute, goofy idea. I did something similar for a friend who got the game recently and went to her island to share fruit and help her pick weeds.
I think this is funny. Now, can I hire someone to fish out all the sea bass off my island? I promise to give them better than a C+ on my review.
@Marxally Can you elaborate? I don't see how this is even close to embarrassing.
The next step consists of a rival company being founded which then pays islanders to put up/wear advertisements for their service...
Funny this popped up. Chrissy Teigen tweeted the other day about whether New Horizons had the option to establish ordinances and it reminded me on how I missed the "Keep Town Beautiful" ordinance from New Leaf. Though I assume with weeds actually having a purpose with crafting, it's why they did away with the idea. Still, I find the weeds annoying. And if I was more trusting of other players, I'd totally would partake in this service 😂
Please, please tell me WeedCo was "founded" on April 20th...
These players are just genius. This game is a masterpiece.
I’ve yet to wrap my head around Animal Crossing, but fun to see people with such cute ideas enjoying the platform!
I see no problem with this, infact I think this is genius how it's all been set up and actually looks fun to do. I alps reosect that he is not charging real money for this
This is amazing!!! Glad to learn that there are great people in this planet!
@Franz YES.
Wish someone wanted to come round and pick weeds from my actual garden for free.
That is so stupid
Am I the only one who wants MORE weeds for my island? I love the variety in shapes and sizes, and they give forested areas a really nice sense of depth!
How hard is it to keep your island free of weeds?
Did this kind of thing happen before New Horizons or is this just a result from too much time being inside because of Quarantine?
Remind me of Elite:Dangerous Fuel Rats
@Birdwrong I kind of like how the island looks when we first arrive. It's a bit flat and boring after pulling all the weeds, but the problem with weeds is that they can quickly grow out of control and take over your whole island. I have one plateau on my island that I'm keeping deliberately weedy where I created some stone "ruins", and it only took a week until almost every square inch of the area was covered with weeds. I have to police the area daily because about half-a-dozen weeds appear around the base of the cliffs and would continue to spread if I didn't pull them.
You shouldn’t have to tip. They can turn around and sell the weeds. Especially when Leif comes to their village
Do they keep the weeds?
"Fandom" would fit this better than "random". I almost thought this was some official in game thing before I read the article.
@Birdwrong Yeah, same here. I like 'em. Too bad they cause negative points for your town. I believe. But I also like the small house, and I really don't want to upgrade, but at the same time I need the additional storage space. Would be neat if you could get the basement without getting a bigger room.
I'd like to invite these clowns to my island, trap them and make them fight to the death for my amusement.
@BionicDodo Winner for best comment.
1 day I was bored and cleared out all the weeds, hardly find any anymore and you do need some for DIY recipes. I make all my wasps nests into medicine b/c so far I don't have anything else to do with wasps bests.
It reached the point where I visited a couple of islands and brought back all the weeds I could.
Cool idea though.
@progx And the scheme behind this service emerges
@Octane "Would be neat if you could get the basement without getting a bigger room."
Can you elaborate on that? I have enough money to pay off my 2nd story thanks to a visit by CJ today so I will be ordering the basement on Friday, after earning my 600 bell interest 😝 but what room gets bigger?
It was funny after adding the 2nd floor that I can't see things in my yard now. My yard is small, I put my house up on some land w/ the river on 3 sides, so I can't spread stuff out. I could Terra form it, but I like it besides not being able to see stuff.
@rjejr The main room gets bigger. From a 6x6 square, to an 8x8. I think it would be neat if you could resize the rooms. Or even delete a room if you wanted to. So many customisation options in this game, but some things have a very linear progression you can't opt out of.
@MasterOfMuppets So you’re the AC version of “The Sims” serial killers?
@Vicki_S I only moonlight as one on dark and stormy nights.
If you have no weeds on your island, two will be spawned the following day.
I'm not sure how or in what quantities they multiply beyond that though as the first thing that I did when booting up the game on the 20th of March was pick up all them weeds.
I actually really like the appearance of weeds in New Horizons though.
I've become the resident bait salesman and farmer in a couple discord servers, but it only really booms around tourneys or big end of month fish migrations
I don’t trust strangers around my flower factories or orchards. Also, weeding is fun and now Leif buys them at a premium when he’s around.
I'm more interested in the uniform than the job. besides, i don't mind picking the weeds. its just another way to earn bells. assuming i have any weeds to pull. (unless i use my nook miles to travel....lol)
Read that as "You can hire a weed company to your island".
Hmm, that'll sure beat the stalk market any day. 😜
@Octane Your first room gets bigger by adding a basement? That's some serious Nintendo Logic right there. They should have made it bigger before they added the 2nd floor to support that big 2nd floor room.
I wouldn't mind a bigger main room, right now mine is filled w/ butterflies in cages - waiting on Flick to embalm them - and Bunny Day stuff, which crowds my Bunny Day bed and makes it difficult to get into. And I'm psychotic so I won't turn off my game unless I'm in bed sleeping. This game is highlighting all of my personality disorders, of which apparently there are many.
I have 1,400,000 in the bank but I wont' spend it before Friday b/c I want my 750 bells .05% interest. Not b/c the money matters, but I want the letter in my mailbox. So my basement and incline have to wait. Not much I can forsee to do after that anyway. Not a big fan of a month's worth of wedding photos, that's just weird.
Thanks for the reply, now I can take a before and after living room pic. I'm always putting those on twitter. #QuaratineLife
You only get like 2 weeds a day. Unless you are time travelling, why would you need this? Stop time travelling and your island will not be covered in weeds.
@Marxally Oh, hush. People are having fun, leave them to it.
@BionicDodo Weeding gardens is actually one of my favorite hobbies, strangely enough.
I think this is cool, I don't get the hate
@deafswin37 Especially when you can just take a few minutes to do it yourself.
We've crossed the Rubicon.
Was gonna make fun of this, but that orientation was adorable and creative. As long as people are having fun with this game, who cares how they play it?
@rjejr I think Octane meant you upgrade the main room before you can get the basement (as in it’s one one the first upgrades) and they wanted the basement and nothing else. Gaining the basement does not make the main room bigger, that one is done expanding before you get a second room.
@rjejr No, the room doesn't get any bigger, but you need to do the room upgrade (from 6x6 to 8x8) before you can do any of the other upgrades; back room, side rooms, and additional floors. It's a linear progression. You can't choose which one you want to upgrade first.
@ShadJV Thanks for jumping in. I've been meaning to find that old comment section of ours and get back to you. CJ arrived yet and I sold him about 500,000 bells worth of fish, most of which I had in storage. I didn't get to play much yesterday as my kids were online playing SSBU w/ their friends all day and then we had a family sit down last night as my son finally decided on a college. At least I think he did, it's a tough decision.
@Octane Oh, that room upgrade, way back when, I got ya now. Well yeah OK, that does make more sense. Sorry, this game befuddled me at times. I know a lot of this makes sense to long time players but coming in fresh some of it is just odd. Like my wife saying last night - "Wadaya mean your building a basement next, the basement is always the first thing you make when you build a house." She's not playing, just bemused by me. 😁
@rjejr She's right though, lol.
@rjejr oh congrats, that’s a good haul of bells! You’ll have that basement in no time!
And I agree fully on it being silly the basement is last, but perhaps that’s why it’s so expensive. It used to be a pretty early upgrade and much cheaper. Guess it costs a lot to install a basement into a fully built two story house!
@rjejr also congrats to your son, it’s hard picking a college, it’s a huge decision! But that’s a big milestone!
Am I the only person, who actually likes weeds on their island?
@ShadJV Thanks for my son. I'm still not sure he's 100% sure. Well he's sure on the college, it's the one we've known for a couple of years now. His decision wasn't really what college to go to as much as - go to the college of his choice for $24,000 a year (that's US dollars, not bells, actual cost of $70,000 before grants and scholarships) or a public state school for free with the scholarship they offered. I always thought free vs $100,000 over 4 years would be an easy decision to make, but it wasn't. And it didn't go the way I thought either. I'm glad he choose to go into debt, even though I wouldn't have, but it's still a lot of debt to take on.
And this is why I play ACNH 6 hours a day b/c the stress of real life is a bit much right now. And it's rained for seemingly 60 straight days, I'd much rather be outside than playing, but not in the rain. #FirstWorldProblems
@rjejr yeah, my undergrad was ridiculously expensive too, so much so that I’d rather not get into numbers. Grad school was comparatively cheap. Wish the state schools were free to me when I was a student, though I was still set on the private college at the time. Good luck to him though!
And yeah, it’s a great escapism, this game hit at such an opportune time. No wonder Nintendo is raking it in.
@ShadJV One good thing about his school choice, an MS in 5 years at undergrad costs. Which I think he can get in 4 years w/ his 8 AP classes/tests and 18 college credits he has in HS. That's the current plan anyway, but who knows. All you can do is plan and try.
