Nintendo's taken a few extra measures in its latest Animal Crossing game to prevent time travellers from spoiling the experience for others, but there are obviously some players out there who still prefer to play the game this way. If you head over to YouTube or search Animal Crossing on social media, you'll no doubt come across an island with all the bells and whistles.
The former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has now been dragged into the debate – with a fan on Twitter recently asking him if he time travelled (a reference to the sometimes controversial style of play in Animal Crossing: New Horizons). Reggie knew exactly what the comment was referring to, and replied with the following tweet:
In previous iterations of Animal Crossing, time travelling could result in broken relationships, a lot of weeds in your town, and villagers asking where you've been. Nintendo has combat this playstyle to some degree in its latest entry, by patching in seasonal events such as Bunny Day.
Are you for or against time travelling in Animal Crossing? Have you done it in New Horizons? Tell us down below.

Of course he wouldn't, his body is always ready.
If anything, Bunny Day encourages players to time travel in order to be safe from eggs.
Peoples business is just that: their business. As long as it doesnt harm or effect anyone else, I dont care. Especially if it makes them happy. That said, time travel is not for me. This is my first in the series, and I'm not in a rush to see everything all at once. Enjoying the slow burn.
The way I see it is time travelling is cheating, plus it takes away from the purpose of the game
He isn't the only one!
My purple pikmin hero ❤❤❤❤❤
I wonder how hard it would be for Nintendo to patch in something that basically prevents time traveling more than a day. Or perhaps forcing the local date and time to sync over the internet, even if the Switch clock is altered.
Seems to me that this would take care of the cheating issues. It doesn't affect me personally, but I hate spoilers and I think it would be more fun if people had to find things out for themselves as they were intended to.
My two cents.
Time travel is undeniably cheating, but most of the time it doesn’t affect other players. How about we just enjoy the game the way we want to enjoy it?
Yeah I am right there with him. I think the appeal of this game is sort of a daily routine, I would get way too tired of it way too quickly if I tried to speed my way through it. Getting bells for projects already feels like a grind, it would be grating if I were doing the time travel.
Of course! Seems like it would be more appealing to younger players who lack the patience and discipline to wait things out.
@Anti-Matter
What will be your next rebellious act? Dunking a biscuit into your tea and leaving crumbs in it? 😆
@PhilKenSebben It's a minor issue but it does disrupt the flow of enjoying the game on social media etc. It's very hard to follow discussions without bumping into images/videos of islands that have clearly had an immense amount of time travel required to progress it well beyond the point that would be physically possible 3/4 weeks into release.
@Ooyah
Hm....
Let's see...
1. Teach my villagers with Indonesian greeting such as "Selamat pagi! " or "Apa kabar ?".
2. Write down "Damn you, (ugly villagers)!! " on letter.
3. Make a Boxing Tournament outside.
4. Have All 10 Boy villagers.
5. Display my Six Pack Chibi Boxers design on the ground or as art installation. 😁
All this talk of time-traveling to get rid of unwanted Villagers. Are any that bad?
I have one that's always going on about working-out. He's a bit boring I suppose - but he was also the one that organized my in-game birthday party too.
I'm quite happy to have whatever villagers the game gives me – more of a surprise like that – and if you want to let them move on naturally then they all ask you about that in time.
It’s your game. You bought it. Do what you want.
It‘s obviously not the intended method of play, and will put you out of sync with everyone playing the game along with seasons, but if you desperately need to get all the game’s contents in as short a time period as possible, then... you can.
For those whose creative ambitions outstrip all other concerns, time travelling is - I suppose - the closest you can come in AC to replicating Minecraft’s creative mode.
So yeah, do what you like. But just, please don’t show me or invite me over. I’m happy just discovering the game as it unfolds over time, and I’d rather not have a year’s worth of content dumped in my face at the town gates.
@Anti-Matter
I was trying to gently poke fun at your idea of what being a "rebel" is... but now I'm just sorry that I said anything!!! 😆
@brunojenso
"All this talk of time-traveling to get rid of unwanted Villagers. Are any that bad?"
Yes, indeed.
I have made a list of villagers who will stay in my island. The villagers which look completely yucky will be eliminated ASAP.
Since the maximum is 10 villagers, i have decided who are the 10 villagers will be and once i got All complete 10 villagers just like i want, i will keep them stay forever in my island / town. My job after that is patroling on my island to find out who will thinking about Moving Out and i will immediatialy say NO / Stay here.
Being a newbie to this franchise I can say without a doubt id never time travel either.I absolutely adore this game and it's obviously a game that's just meant to be played for however long you want it to last and as such there is no rush to do certain things.
Having a debt to pay as well as having to pay for almost everything that goes on with your Island is fun but very time consuming to pay off but that's how I like it.This game is going to be played every single day for me as far as I'm concerned so I have no intention of 'cheating'.
That said there is no rule saying you can't play it how you want so I have nothing against other people time travelling.
I've played now 25 days without time travelling through the story and made my Island beautiful (imho). Now, I'd like to "finish" the game the next weeks so I startet time travelling to complete my Museum. I really liked it but I don't want to wait till August or so to complete everything. But the Game was very good and no regrets at all
The only thing that has me considering it is you get cockroaches by not playing for a month. When I don't play for a month it will be because I am done with the game
Now that there's no in-game clock there's really no debate as to whether time travel is cheating or not. If you have to literally go into your system's clock and change it, that's clearly cheating.
That's fine as people can play however they want. I just wish the players time travelling would mostly just keep to themselves about it though. Seen a lot of instances of someone asking a question and someone answering suggesting that they just time travel. Also saw a post on Facebook where someone who was clearly time travelling was advertising high turnip prices and asking for a big cut as compensation. If you want to cheat then go nuts but don't try to drag down those who are trying to play fairly too.
@Edward_J_Grug_III Is there any reason why you'd even want cockroaches in NH though?
@BenAV
@Edward_J_Grug_III
Are they needed for the museum? If so, there is hopefully another way of getting them!
@Ooyah They aren't, thankfully.
@Anti-Matter ''I have made a list of villagers who will stay in my island. The villagers which look completely yucky will be eliminated ASAP. Who would've thought that you of all people runs a little dictatorship in their AC town. I'm not surprised
I simply don't understand: if you don't like its pace, why do you play Animal Crossing?
I don't cheat, but I don't begrudge others of time travelling if that is how they best enjoy the game.
I think I did time travel a few times in Wild World just to see what the consequences would be (I wouldn't have gained anything from it) but I haven't done it since.
@MrBlacky
Nope at all.
I play ACNL with a mission.
Mission to get exactly 10 villagers based on my list because i have more than 30 villagers on my list.
So, i have to choose who will be on my 1st town, who will be on my 2nd town, etc.
I take control all of them since i don't want any of them thinking about moving out.
I want All those 10 villagers stay forever because i like them all.
And once my mission accomplished, i can enjoy my beautiful town with All selected 10 villagers in my town. 😎
Also, i knew the secret how to take hiatus from ACNL without losing any villagers. I have take control all of my 3 towns from 3 copies of ACNL 3DS.
Players can do whatever they want but no time travel is the way it should be played. The only thing that highly bothers me is those bloody youtube videos "get every rare flower" "make millions of bells fast" etc and the douchy youtuber uses time travel like it's the most normal thing ever, to hell with that!
@Anti-Matter
This would totally work for Kim Jong-un to.
"I take control all of them since i don't want any of them thinking about moving out.
I want All those Northkoreans stay forever because i like them all.
You should really think about writing press releases for him. 😆
Changing the clock should require an internet connection to avoid cheaters/time travelers.
YES!!! IT WORKS!!!
Next stop... the future!
I only "time travelled"in the 'original' Gamecube version, and that was just to get the NES classics. This is my only AC game since then, but with it being a lot more sophisticated, I don't intend on time traveling at all.
Except in real life... in fact I'm just about to test my machine now by travelling back in time 5 minutes... wish me luck.
Play however you want who cares. It is cheating tho 😎
Time travel is not for me. It's the same as cheating which is something I don't agree with.
What's the point in playing the game if you're going to cheat?
Anyway, to each their own, I only wish they could keep it for themselves instead of flowing Twitter with their posts spoiling the game for others.
Definition of cheating..... act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination. Time traveling cant be cheating because it is neither a)dishonest or b)unfair because it gives one person an advantage over others. Most people over 13 will tell you that they TT if they do it. They wont try to be dishonest and make you think they completed their island and museum in only one month. Also, it cant be unfair because anyone and everyone can do it. If you choose not to, ok. If you do, ok. It maybe isnt a game mechanic, but anyone can do it with all the functionality their Switch has built in. It isnt an aim bot, it isnt jail broken, there isnt 1 player with a modded controller... Plus in a game like this, what is the advantage of getting your museum to 100% in less than a week? All of you against TT seem to believe the game wasnt meant to be played with TT
and think it cant be enjoyed completely when TT. Okay so then I'd say this, what is their advantage if you're enjoying it even slightly better than them? Faster growth? Apparently that ruins the overall experience. You'd even get more bang for your buck because you played a $60 game for more than a week. And this isnt a competitive game, so there isnt any "winning" involved. Sounds like time travelers are actually at a disadvantage when it's all said and done. So whats the big deal if TT can get more stuff faster? Again. Whats their actual advantage other than finishing the game faster and putting it up on the shelf to collect dust? If you're upset when others TT, well i think this comes back to the comparing yourself to others, which we all do at times. But at some point when we are growing up, we learn that other kids come from richer/poorer families. Will some get the new cool toy months before us? Sure. Will some never get it. Also sure. But some day you learn to appreciate the ones you have. But then some of us dont. Some of us grow into our 40s still spiteful for other people's progress. We still covet the material things they own and we dont.... Just grow up.
Yeah, time travelling is not for me, kind of like peeping at your Christmas presents early, it just doesn’t appeal to me in the slightest. I missed out on some of the cherry blossom recipes this year, was that annoying, maybe a little for about 5mins but there’s a big part of me that knows I have them to look forward to next time around.
@Kushmon you and your friends make a bet to see who can complete their museum first with no time traveling. Someone time travels and finishes before everyone else. That's cheating. Not the time traveling itself, but the act of using a mechanic that was previously agreed upon that wouldn't be used in their friendly contest. That should at least make sense to some of you proclaiming this cheating nonsense.
@MrBlacky

@Anti-Matter Blimey, sounds stressful - good luck to you. I'll just let them come and go and enjoy the new characters I get.
@Anti-Matter Do you have Three switches to dedicate to three ACNH towns? or do you play until you get bored of your perfectly controlled town and delete it to make a new one? No offense, but the way you play this game sounds like the opposite of a relaxing escape from reality.
@JohnyHalo
I only have one Nintendo Switch.
But, for ACNL 3DS i have 3 games of them. (Look at my post above)
I crafted and shaped my towns to be enjoyed by me and i completely do not want to delete after that.
No Way !
I have built a Perfect town and i want to enjoy after hard work.
I built the town / island with a mission.
Btw, if i have more money and chances, i might purchase another Switch and another copy of ACNH. One island is never enough for me.
@Anti-Matter, you make me smile, thank you.
well im not going to wait 2 years to 100% the game, i have not time traveled yet but
i suspect that to be a huge possibility when i reach like 70 to 90% of everything collected to the point that im not getting what i need to finish the rest because the time for what you need to show up is so dang long
p.s nah it aint cheating if everyone can just as easily do it. let's not act like purists here.
@brunojenso “are any that Bad?’
You’ve not seen true horror until you see the abyssal spawn called freckles the duck.
I couldn’t care less who cheats at games as long as it doesn’t mess with the experience I’m looking to get. Some people just don’t have the patience to wait for things, or they’re genuinely crunched for time and miss a lot of the events and they’d like to experience them. Whatever their reasons, I’m cool with it as long as they stay in their lane away from me.
Personally, I won’t play with someone that time travels or cheats in any other way in this game. I’d rather pay my legit gained bells to attain items, vs someone hand me something I’m in need of for a Nook Miles Ticket, or even free because they duped 50 of them awhile ago, or got it through other cheating means. Trading items and generally playing with other legit players enriches my experience overall. As much as I’ll give the cheaters their space and I’m happy to leave them be, it’s also my prerogative to have nothing to do with them since interacting with them cheapens my overall experience.
Didn't Nintendo make it impossible to trigger events via time traveling? The game wont trigger them unless it detects the system's time has been correctly synced via internet connection, if playing offline it will only trigger as long as the last checkmark of time altering was made via online syncing, any manual time altering will result in all in-game events not triggering.
@Kirbyfan Ok I'll prepare myself for the duck.
Actually so far I love my villagers. BUT if that bloody Easter Bunny tried to move in – then I'd take action. One more joyful hop from that bunny and I swear I'll f#4%^^7 have him!
Play how you want to play as long as it doesn't interfere with other's gameplay. I will choose to not time travel, but I have 0 issue with others doing it. In fact if you want to do it, I encourage it as long as that's how you want to play.
who cares if he is "time traveling" or not; as long as he and everyone else is enjoying the game, we will all be good. too bad we can use time traveling to change the color of the airport.
I’ve only done it once on the fishing tourney because I had to work during the event just set the clock back a few hours. I felt dirty doing so..
@ComposedJam that’s fine, you can play however you want I’m just putting in my opinion. I just believe that time skipping takes away from the experience of the game by rushing into the end game
@Kushmon Well let me understand a few things here... According to your flawed logic
1. 'if everyone can do it then it is not cheating', then a Konami code in Contra is not a cheat code too because everyone can input it.
2. AC might not be a competitive game, but imagine this - somehow people find out ways to generate 99999 bells by editing the save file. Is this considered cheating to you, even though it is not a competitive game? If yes, then I don't see why TT to gain items not possibly obtained currently is not cheating. If you say no, maybe you should go and study the sims 4 cheat code. It is the same type of life sim game, and the cheats doesn't provide any competitive advantages, but they are still cheats.
I am no way against the cheaters or hate them, but they really need to start to first admit that it is cheating and stop giving flawed logic to justify that they are not cheating, and second stop posting spoilers on forums/reddit. Disgusting and annoying.
@satanicangel its obvious you think very highly of your intelligence, as do I. Calling my logic flawed. That just means you disagree with my facts of what cheating is. The Konami code is indeed a 'cheat' code, but it's not the definition of cheating. You're sadly blinded by your pride and immaturity, sorry but it's the cold truth. The Konami code is in competitive games, sure. In tournaments, its against regulations. So using it would be cheating. But two friends playing together, both input the code, well it's not technically cheating. No one has an unfair advantage and no one is being dishonest. Some people say, "Oh. Semantics." But I see it as people like you needing a negative label for the other group for having a different approach than you. Lets all face it, calling someone a cheater is much harsher than an exploiter. And we love to harsh on those with different views/opinions. And the 99999 bell thing you speak of, that's an exploit. An exploit can be cheating, but you can also exploit something without cheating. That's what TT is, exploiting certain features in the game and with the switch to play the game in a way other than what was originally intended. Again, not cheating. You're just sour and havent learned to seperate your emotions and opinions from logic and understanding. I'm sure you disagree and have some retort because let's face it, barely anyone on the internet deals with critisms well. But the faster you get over being entitled and all prideful about how your view is so much more superior, the less frustrated you'll find yourself. Oh and btw, I don't use social media much, but if you get spoilers through those that upset you... well you have no one to blame but yourself. You cant control the actions of others. What's more revolting IMO than someone who has to ruin for everyone else is someone who cries like a child about life not being fair. Most people figure that out before they're teenagers, you dont have to keep reminding us. Kids I swear.
@satanicangel poke holes in my flawed logic, please. I dare you. How is it a)unfair or b)dishonest? Is it unfair that they want to TT and you just want to play the game the way it should be? How is that unfair? And I swear, if it's about comparing who gets a 'bigger, better' island faster, I'm gonna lose it lol. There's no advantage in my mind, other than bragging rights. Which circles back to comparing yourself to others and what they have that you dont. Please oh please enlighten me on how TT is cheating.
@satanicangel one last example of how cheating is situational and not the act in itself, just incase you're still not convinced. Obviously, in the Olympics using performance enhancing drugs is cheating. But if they had two Olympics, the normal one and one where the athletes have free reign of whatever to become the best, well its obvious that using steroids in itself isnt cheating. Animal Crossing is that 2nd Olympics, some people are just choosing to 'compete' against the users while staying 'clean.' You can do whatever though really. And how you mentioned Contra, unless you're going for a top score/record, no. Using a 'cheat' code isnt cheating. It's exploiting. If you a)dishonestly stated you got a high score b)unfairly using the Konami code in Contra, then yes I'd agree with you. That is in fact cheating. No one can cheat when there arent losers and winners. Well there are losers... those still crying/complaining.
And it ultimately comes down to opinion how to play the game. I get it, some games I exploit, some I dont. Some I look up walkthroughs, some I play from start to end with nothing to just experience it. Like FF7 Remake. It depends on my attachment to the game on how much I'll exploit or YouTube on how to farm the most money/exp. Alot of the time I wait until I finish the main story campaign before I dive in and 100%. So I get where people are coming from when they swear off TT and are determined to play the game religiously the 'correct' way. What I dont understand is people's frustration with TT themselves. Some people would go so far to root against them, hoping the developers put in a way to eliminate TT altogether. They'd love to see the 'others' so upset over that. That gets too negative and political for me. Basically Republicans vs Democrats. Or this sports team vs. that sports team. Its idiotic and barbaric to feed off the pain of those you view as the enemy. The gaming community (and the world) has too much of that crap already. And when any game/movie/whatever I deeply care about comes out, the last thing I do is read posts or forums. I get that it's hard and slightly different when you cant exile yourself from news and social media for months on end with AC, but ultimately when you see a 'spoiler' you end up at a crossroads. Get all pissy and vindictive, or get over it. Those are your basic two options. It can still bug the crap out of you. No one likes someone who runs the fun for everyone else. But the hatred that sits and stirs inside some of us is pretty pathetic, am I right?
Cheating vs exploitation
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://amp.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/7gcczc/whats_the_difference_between_exploiting_and/&ved=2ahUKEwiqna6ex-7oAhVQnq0KHdmzCVEQFjAEegQICRAB&usg=AOvVaw0b75uA18v5anoOfGQv_rDK&cshid=1587095550688
@satanicangel well then those who go to other people island to sell turnip and buy flower seeds are cheater too then, yes? The store generate different seed beside your native ever so often ( thou not as often as one wish ) Why not wait and check the cranny store everyday and hope that they change new seeds. And why not wait for your own island turnip stock price rise to the intended price one willing to sell instead of stalking other people island stock price to gain bells? If TT is cheating these are too, imo.
@Kushmon so tell me, which dictionary/website's definition for cheat mentioned about it is only limited in competitive games? In fact, they are so wide that even cheating death is a kind of cheat - but I will leave that in another discussion. I will certainly be glad to learn new things and apologise - that is if you could find it though. On the other hand, if that is what defined by you instead of some reputable source, then clearly you do not understand what is the meaning of cheat. And the example you have given is wrong as in, even if 2 person input the cheat codes together while they play, it is still cheating. They are both using cheat code, it is really that simple. (and no, using cheat codes openly doesn't suddenly make yourself not cheating. They are called cheat codes for obvious reasons)
For the forum part, there is a spoiler tag specifically designed for that purpose, but I guess it might be invisible to TT. I don't know.
One last thing, other than mentioning your logic is flawed and quoting examples(thus debating rationally) I don't remember attacking you personally. Your attitude and response make it seems like you are the kid though.
@UnknownReader Is going other people's island to buy flowers/sell whatever an unintended feature of the game? If yes it is cheating. Last time I know they are actually part of the game - correct me if I am wrong though.
TT on the other hand is definitely not part of 'intended feature' of the game.
@satanicangel 'cheat' code sounds better than 'exploit' code. Not every instance of using a 'cheat' code is someone cheating. Cheating death... avoid, escape. So that cheat definition is a strawman argument. Has no substance or point to the discussion we are having. No one is using that meaning to cheating here.
@satanicangel also, I dont care if you think I'm a kid or not. That's childish but nice attempt at triggering me. I'm not new to the internetz as I'm sure you're not either. You dont have to 'attack' (lol, that's such a trigger word these days) outright to have a passive-aggressive, elitist, know-it-all personality. You knew exactly what you were doing. And you know what you're doing now. "Oh no, why you so upset bro? I didnt mean anything by it, I just wanted a civil discussion." Then dont start a conversation with your kitty claws out. Dont say things, knowing exactly how you meant it, and then back down after being confronted. Own up to it. You felt you knew exactly what you were talking about, probably still do, and you responded to someone you thought was just spouting nonsense. Dont BS a BSer
@satanicangel some cheat codes in games make the game harder on the player. Explain that one. If cheat codes are 100%, black and white cheating, then how do those specific cheat codes make it an 'unfair advantage?' You explain that one and I'll at least agree with you that all 'cheat' codes are in fact cheating, and not exploiting. Also, can you explain to me what the difference between an exploitation and cheating is? Or are you in the camp that they are always the same thing too?
Waiting for the deflection...
@satanicangel the intend way of playing is to wait for them to sell the seed or go to mystery island hope different flowers spawn that are not part of the regular seeds they sell. So isn't it "unfair" to those who do not have NSO and can't travel to friends /strangers island to buy those seeds or trade turnip for profit?
Edit: TT is part of the game, it's up to player if they want to use it or not. We all know how strict Nintendo is, if they don't allow it, it will not be there.
I don't care how people play their game, cos I did not buy them the game or the system.
I would be annoyed if it's online PVP, that is why I will not play online multiplayer game
@satanicangel also, what is next are we going to talk about people who use Motag to get a specific villager(s) cos it's hard to find amiibo card now and it cost X amount to just get 1 instead of "blind stack" of 6?
I don't use those cos I have some amiibo card and I can always wait for them to tell me they want to leave and then go to mystery island a few time to scout for one I don't mind staying on my island.
It's funny. I dont think people are going to be crying about 'cheating' when people who buy the game in a year or two are TT. You might say, "Oh, well it's still cheating." Even though logically it isnt. It's just people wont care by then because most people declaring this whole cheating nonsense are either a)not entirely correct on the true definition of cheating or b)upset because the people rushing through the game are bragging and showing off online. So ignorant or bitter. But all the people being so negative and bitter right now wont be putting nearly as much effort into complaining by then since... they dont feel personally victimized 2 years later.(lol, it's a game. These type of serious words shouldn't even need to be used. But here we are.) They would've finished the game by then, so they might be crying about something new at that point. Or they matured. Again, it's okay to be upset with people who 'spoil' the fun. But it's the manner in which you carry yourself after that speaks true volumes. We all have a tendency to be selfish. Its just sad that some of us can get so blinded by it that when others participate in the same event, we lash out against them when it feels 'unfair.' All because others dont do it the way 'I' think it should be done. Immaturity. There is really no better word to describe it. Entitled 30 year old crybabies and a majority of preteens have alot more in common than they think.
Loot boxes. In some games, they are more than just cosmetic. Some of us have jobs, some of us have alot of kids, or no kids. Some are rich, some are poor... you all get it. In a game where loot boxes could let those of us with expendable incomes get a tactical advantage on new players, is that cheating or an exploit? It can possibly create an "unfair advantage" to those who come from lower income households. But the developers put them in. So day one, Star Wars Battlefront II. Everyone who unlocked heroes and abilities with hundreds of dollars. Cheaters? Exploiters? Both? Neither? Mic drop? Yes.
LOL
What is going on here ? 😆
@Anti-Matter great minds, battling it out for all the glory and spoils imaginable. Epic stuff lol
@RPGamer Yep,loving it!I only bought the Switch for Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle originally..which up until now was my favourite Switch game but out of the collection I've built up this has definitely hit the top!
Years from now they should make this game internet only with saves on the server side--no more time travel, obvious duping and multiplayer should be flawless. Come on Nintendo, catch up with everyone else with online play!
@ReWane Ugh, I hated those damn eggs. Trying to find a damn fossile and 9 out of 10 holes dug up is a stupid egg. Bad design if you ask me.
I told myself I wouldn't time travel, and I didn't. At least, I didn't until I "beat the game." I can see why people are anti- time travel.
I'm not doing it to make more money. In fact, I've spent more money because of it, haha. I'm now doing it because I want to finish my island. I've literally moved 13-15 buildings plus several ramps, and some even moved twice. I'm not about to spend 2 weeks trying to perfect the design.
I've been designing it to resemble parts of Link's Awakening. I've finished Mabe village so far and it looks DOPE.
I don't play AC but so long as its not effecting other players then why bother fussing over it? And who are you cheating against? Yourself?
Wow a story based on reggie’s one word twitter response lol
