The 'auto battler' genre has grown in popularity since it was born via the Dota 2 mod Auto Chess last year. If you're not familiar with this type of game, it's basically like chess – but the catch is that once you've placed your pieces and the match has begun, you have no further control over what happens. Since Auto Chess appeared, we've seen high-profile rivals emerge, such as Teamfight Tactics, Dota Underlords, and Hearthstone's Battlegrounds.
Switch was due to get its first taste of the genre via the free-to-play title Auto Chess: Heroes of Paragon last week, but the game was pulled from the European eShop download update at the last minute.
Developer Octobox Interactive has issued a statement saying that it was 'forced to postpone' the Switch release for 'reasons beyond our control'. However, it is keen to stress that the game has not been cancelled:
Today was the day. The day when Paragon heroes were supposed to rejoin the battle in Auto Chess: Heroes of Paragon. But unfortunately, for the time being we’ve been forced to postpone the game’s Nintendo release for reasons beyond our control. More information later. We are currently working on resolving the issue as soon as possible and getting the things back on track.
Important: the game is NOT cancelled and its release WILL happen before much longer!
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and will do our best to keep you in the loop.
It's worth noting that this isn't the same game as the more simply-titled Auto Chess, which is also due to come to Switch soon. It's also worth noting that some of the character models seen in this game might ring a bell – that's because it uses assets from Epic Games' Paragon, a multiplayer online battle arena game which was shut down in 2018. Following its closure, Epic released all $12,000,000 worth of game assets online, stating that they were free to use by anyone working with the Unreal Engine 4.
The North American launch of Auto Chess: Heroes of Paragon was due to take place this week on the 12th, but we'd imagine that will also be pushed back. Were you hoping to get your hands on this fun-looking auto battling title? Let us know with a comment.
