As well as the trusty NookPhone available to players in-game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons will also be treated to a real-life smartphone application tucked inside the official Nintendo Switch Online app.
Revealed in today's Animal Crossing Direct, this upcoming service is called 'NookLink'. By heading to the NookLink portion of the Switch Online app, you'll be able to can scan a Custom Design QR Code pattern from previous games Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer with your smartphone. From there, you can download your favourite patterns to New Horizons and use them in-game.
On top of this, you can also talk with friends who also have the app and are playing New Horizons. You can either use your phone as a keyboard to send instant messages, or you can opt to talk via voice chat.
NookLink is set to launch in March, "soon after" the full game's release date of the 20th.
Will this finally give you a reason to boot up the Nintendo Switch Online app? Send us an instant message below.

Okay, probably the most useful NSO app.
It's not AMAZING, but it's also not the previous two apps.
when a friend traps you on a bed or something thinking you can no longer type ingame then you whip out your phone and launch NSO to send messages ingame foilng their evil plan
New chat app? When will Nintendo realise the chat app is crapp! Utter crapp. Ruined the whole direct that was rubbish news.
Another app, for chat. How didn't we think of that!?
Not a fan of using the NSO app, but it looks like the best solution for the QR code pattern loading. Nice to know all the New Leaf patterns are still useful!
Honestly, if they make a switch pro, they better put a camera on it. Please, I don't wanna use this dumb app.
Use your real phone to text your friends in-game. Just like real life! 😉
OH MY GOD! You can use your phone to speak to someone you know?!? Or send them a piece of written text?!?
Mind. Blown.
Does this mean there won’t be keyboard chat in the game itself?
In the Direct it's shown the post office is now located inside the Airport and you can send postcards to "residents." But do you think that's also where you could send a message to a friend with a copy of the game and have it sent through Nintendo Switch Online (instead of having to travel to their Island and sending the message from their own "post office" like we've had to do in other AC games)? I wish Nintendo had been a bit more specific on that post office functionality.
Maybe I misread, but can you use voice chat/ text chat through the Switch itself?
QR CODES! QR CODES! QR CODES! QR CODES! QR CODES!
everything else is icing on the cake with that app.
@geox30 it’s the same app.
@DarthFoxMcCloud Good point. Being able to do this will be an important part of the game for me too.
Smartphone app to voice chat is so dumb, why Nintendo keep pushing that stupid app while free to play games use native voice chat on their games.
I will give them that it's nice for the QR reader feature. That's about all. I'd just stick with Discord if I want to use my phone.
