We've seen 24-hour gaming marathons before, but this particular story is slightly different. A YouTuber by the name of SwankyBox, who is said to be a "huge" fan of the Nintendo 64 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, recently cut himself off from the real world and spent hours exploring the 64-bit land of Hyrule - while working his way through dungeons, watching the sunset (in-game, of course) and scouting out a safe and quiet spot to sleep in order to get a good night's rest.
In case you're wondering, this VR experience is running on a modified version of the original Nintendo 64 game. While it's certainly not perfect, it was enough to get the job done - as he was even able to do push-ups on the top of Death Mountain (what an experience!). He also took some time to see what it was like to ride Epona and fish in VR. Take a look below:
While we wouldn't recommend trying this out, if you are interested in getting up close with the land of Hyrule, you can always try out Nintendo's official Labo VR support in the Switch title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That's if you can handle it for more than a few minutes.
What do you think of this VR experiment? Would you want to live in Hyrule for 24 hours? Comment down below.

I would love to play OoT in VR. I think it would be a great launch title if Nintendo ever decides to get serious about VR. It doesn't sound like it would be too demanding for the next Switch to handle with the high frame rate and resolution that VR requires.
What an incredible video. I’d obviously love a true Nintendo VR some day but in the meantime, the number of hacks fans have done for classic games is mind blowing. My personal favourites are Metroid Prime, for obvious reasons and Pikmin, because it feels like a tiny diorama.
Although this would have been my childhood dream to achieve, Oot doesnt exactly seem like its the most immersive experience to have in VR. Its a n64 world with a lot flat areas due to memory constraints, low poly count, and ugly low res two point filtered textures. The 3ds version probably would have been better but idk if Citra can handle VR or Oot3D yet.
Swankybox is an amazing Youtuber , i’d recommend you check his other video , his video bring back alot of nostalgia
Nathaniel Bandy also did this but with Mario 64 , you should watch that also
I will watch it later, seems interesting.
Mario64 VR would be phenomenal
@Gravitron Watch nathaniel bandy on youtube:) he spent 24h in Mario 64 VR
Great, something else I wanna try. XD
That looks like an incredible feat regarding coding. What with the HUD and text boxes? They didn't simply put the camera in front of Link's eyes
The only reason I don't like VR is that I don't want every one of my favorite franchise turn to first person. Games like Doom, Resident Evil, and Wii Sports would be awesome in VR but Mario Kart, Zelda, Smash Bros., and Final Fantasy I rather keep those out of VR.
I think a Mario game could be great in VR, if Mario was a pretty small character that just jumped around miniature toy-like levels kinda like Moss. Would also be fun to have AR that would allow Mario to jump around and interact with real objects in your living room, but I'm not sure if the tech is there yet with the kind of fidelity that would be required..
Captain Toad seems like it would also be great in VR, with little stages you could look at from different angles to find secrets. (I sometimes wonder if it came out of VR experiments at Nintendo...)
With that low of a frame rate and graphics?
N64 is my favorite system, but I'd never do anything N64 VR.
@retro_player_22, I don't think you'd have to worry about that too much, as VR games such as Astro Bot, Moss, Trover Saves the Universe, and Arca's Path exist.
True, technically you're still a character/being looking at the world around you in a "First Person" view in most of these games, however in practice they're still 3rd person games as you mostly control an external character seperate from yourself.
Have to agree, Zelda is at its best as a third-person sworder.
Wouldn’t call him a huge fan if he was willing to do something like this
Was this non-stop? What about peeing?
@DrDaisy Zora’s Fountain seems like a good place to take care of that.
Hook it to my veins!!!
@retro_player_22 Yeah, @RR529 nailed it. Moss is basically Zelda with a mouse and you are a benevolent helper on top of the one controlling the mouse. It is actually a pretty great experience, because the sense of scale is so apparent - the mouse is mouse sized and the play areas are set in environments are made up of true-to-life scaled elements.
If Nintendo had a hardware way to do this (Labo VR is not meant for long-term comfort at all), Zelda could be done third person and even have a previous game as a starting point to make it feel natural - Minish Cap. (Should be noted that Pikmin would also lend itself very well to this approach)
Moss itself is awesome on its own, though. It is only held back now by being a first generation game — it targeted early VR — though that actually made it port to Oculus Quest quite nicely. The storybook transitions could use a boost, though.
If you get a chance, try it out.
All this said, if Nintendo finds a way into VR / AR in a generation or two, a first-person approach to Zelda would be expected... if Metroid can ever gain some traction again, it would be the best candidate, probably. Mario should never be first-person in my estimation, though.
SwankyBox really is a top notch youtuber and a genuinely cool guy. Great video, I hope Nintendo sees the potential in this at one point.
