If you're looking for your next adventure on Nintendo Switch, you might want to consider picking up Ashen. The game launched for the console and other platforms yesterday, bringing with it this new trailer (see above).
To be more clear, Ashen is only actually available in North America at the time of writing - European players will need to wait until next week on 19th December. The game is an open-world co-op action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home. It's been likened to Dark Souls (because of course it has), and has been described as "a tight, third person, skills-based action RPG with passive multiplayer".
We've got a pretty extensive feature list for you below if you'd like to learn more:
Passive Co-Op MultiplayerAs you adventure through Ashen, you'll occasionally encounter other players in a massive open world, akin to the passive multiplayer of Journey. It's up to you to decide how to deal with them - fight together against evil, invite them into your party or simply ignore them.
Souls with a Twist
Ashen is faithful to the "souls" genre of stamina-based combat, introducing players to a punishing yet satisfyingly vast world. But here’s the twist - no two gameplay experiences are alike. Whether you’re exploring bogs, investigating a fjord or pillaging an old palace, where you are at any given moment will dramatically alter the course of your adventure. It's a brutal open world; you're just living in it.Creatures + Combat
Ashen has no shortage of dangerous encounters, from hostile enemies to indigenous creatures. You'll be rewarded for studying the environment and its inhabitants, planning your adventure rather than flying by the seat of your pants. The flora and fauna within the world aren't just fantastical; they're often fatal. Each confrontation, no matter how trivial, has potentially dire consequences.Crafting is Key
As you discover survivors, you'll have the choice to invite them to your Town. But these aren't mere adventurers - they're potential collaborators, bringing a plethora of crafting skills, from blacksmithing to foraging expertise, in tow.Story + Score
Famed fantasy author Mark Lawrence (The Broken Empire trilogy) and renowned band Foreign Fields collaborated closely with the development team at Aurora44 to craft a cohesive and unique narrative and sound.
You can grab the game from the US eShop for $39.99. Pricing for the European release hasn't yet been confirmed.

OOOohhhhhhhhhh
Excited is a big word, but i have some mild interest.
When it's on sale.
I played this a lot when it came to Game Pass. It's a very, very good game
Wow it looks beautiful, lovely art style. By the sounds of it, it has all the elements of my ideal game too. I hate to be that person... but I hope they release a physical copy. When I am paying that amount and investing a decent amount of time I like to have a tangible keep forever copy.
@CairiB
BTW did you tackle your 16 year old to get the Assassins creed collection ?
if this had split-screen..! Propably too big an ask for a title like this. I only play couchcoop :/
Does this have couch co op or is it online only? Also is it continuous co-op or do you have long periods of solo play.
Might be a fun game for me and my wife
@Ruthless4u no couch-coop, you'd have to need two switches and both play online I think.
@KitsuneNight I didn’t in the end, however it seems to have snuck it’s way in to my Christmas Argos order so will be in my hands on Friday.
@CairiB Be that person; never stop being that person.
@XBontendo
It's currently on sale 20% off on Steam.
When I hear "Dark Souls" I get a little sketched cause if I'm being SUPER honest- Dark Souls does very little besides stress me out. This though? It's looking more and more like a must-have the more I hear about it. We'll see.
"Hey Boris. Playing a wonderful game. It's called Ashen. Maybe you've heard about it. It's a very good game. And its out in America right now. That's okay, I'm sure you'll get it soon, but I'm playing it right now. Some lovely people released it in America first. Just called to tell you that."

It's on sale in the eShop, I am going to pick it up as I enjoyed it on the Xbox. Probably grab it for my Son as well.
@gcunit well ok then, I will. 😊
@GhostGeneration I agree. I understand that they are trying to promote the game, but honestly, if a Souls fans tried this and it wasn't quite Souls-y enough they'd abandon the game, and if a non-souls fan saw the description, they'd be put off from the start.
I think we need to start describing games in a better fashion than just comparing to other titles.
this looks more "fun" than Dark Souls but it is still an indie game
does anyone know the amount time it takes to play this before "completing" it?
ill pay the $40 if i know ill get over 30 hours and if not ill wait for a sale
@Richnj Yep. That's what I try to do on The Ghost Generation. My reviews aren't so much "reviews" as they are a real-deal look into my thoughts about the game, as a fan. More like an editorial, cause I just think everyone else is kinda doing the same thing. people seem to like it so far!
games like this should be $15-20 and the studio should plan multiple $5 DLC content drops once the game reaches all major platforms
@OmegaDestroyer
Until Jan 3rd no less.
@CairiB
So there wil be lots of assassination in your immediate future !
Mind letting me know what you think ?
Thought this looked interesting, but not sure if i'll ever grab it.
It's on a launch discount on the eshop. Through December 19 it is $31.99 instead of $39.99.
Oh its on gamepass...cool ill try it there. If i like it and the reviews for the switch version are good, I'll buy it there.
If this require Internet to play Online only...that is a pass for me.
Already got it on Steam so I'm good, will only double dip if Switch version had a physical release at some point.
Maybe all these Dark Souls clones will convince FromSoftware to support the Switch more.
I loved this on PC and will double dip if the performance is good. Anyone know if this is 60fps on Switch?
@KitsuneNight absolutely I am really looking forward to getting it and having a go having missed out on the Creed series first time round. Currently working my way through Witcher 3 at the moment!
A lot of you guys need to learn that porting a game, even one that has been out for a while, to new hardware costs time and money, and so it doesn't always make sense to charge the same rate on other platforms where they have already made their investment back.
@isellpixels I got around 20 hours out of the game. I took it fairly slow but didn't get every single item. Unfortunately, a lot of the hidden stuff is just upgrade materials and doesn't really reward careful exploration, but the game is a lot of fun.
Looks a bit too grey and miserable to me. Where's the blue skies and green fields? It's like everything has been covered with ashoohhhhhh
This game is MAD cool so far, runs super smooth too.
A fun enough game, but not very good with keeping your attention for long. I'd say try it out on Gamepass if you have access to it, but I don't support the use of anti-consumer services. This game is not worth $40, wait for a sale.
@CairiB
I personally like Syndicate the best
Victorian age London , whats not to like ?
But III is pretty good too with 1700's Boston
I havent played IV or Rogue yet.
I have SO MANY games.
@KitsuneNight oh that sounds good, love a vintage setting. Fable 3 was one of my favs. I know it’s not a popular opinion but I am loving the ports of these games, my kids were playing these games but I was too busy keeping them fed and watered to play them. 😂
@CairiB
I don't think Syndicate wil ever be ported sadly.
Not cause the NX cant handle it, ( see the vitcher 3 ) but because I doubt Ubisoft will care to make the effort.
Sides, as long as you enjoy the ports, I wouldn't worry ( or care ) much about popular opinion anyway.
There are lots of popular games I loath.
@KitsuneNight couldn’t agree more! I am actually quite surprised at my buying and playing habits on the switch, I do of course have some beloved Nintendo exclusives in my collection but there are way more third party, and port in particular, than I ever could have predicted.
Disliked the game right away. The graphics aint that great. Seen latest 3D games are using almost same engine that isn't really that demanding and it plays like dark souls, but less great. It didn't do anything for me. Not for everyone this game.. even as RPG lover
@CairiB
I mostly play on the PC these days, and i rarely turn my tv on anymore, let alone watch it.
So the NX is really up my street for not being tethered to any sort of screen.
I got a lot of games on both platforms though.
