Chorus Worldwide and Alfa System have announced that Sisters Royale, a vertically scrolling shoot ‘em up, will be launching on Switch in the west next year.
The game is inspired by the anime aesthetic of Castle of Shikigami and stars five sisters with unique magical powers. Just like Castle of Shikigami, Sisters Royale deploys power boost mechanics that allow players to gain scores by taking high risks, but features varying difficulty levels so that anyone can have fun regardless of experience. It'll also feature leaderboard support for those keen on being the very best.
Chorus Worldwide's Shintaro Kanaoya has shared the following in a press release:
“We’re super excited to be working with Alfa System to bring Sisters Royale to a global audience. The original Castle of Shikigami series is a beloved classic of the genre and having Alfa System come back to make a modern spiritual successor is thrilling. With its tongue-in-cheek storyline, gameplay and production values from a team at the height of their 30 years in the industry, we think Sisters Royale will appeal to shmup fans of all levels, as well manga and anime lovers around the world.”
The game is already available on Switch in Japan, but this new western release will arrive on 30th January 2020. Pre-orders are set to appear on the eShop starting on 19th December.
As ever, make sure to share your thoughts on this one in the comments below.

I would love to see a new Shooter in the Style of Parodius.
It feels like we're only getting vertical Bullet Hell Shooters these Days and they all look so bland and generic by now.
pretty awful, i'm sure i'll buy it.
Bullet hell, no thanks.
Is this a mobile phone game, optimized for switch with wallpaper on most the screen and ps4 control prompts?
Not so much interested in giant screen cleavage
Wish it had a physical release.
Looks super boring and generic like most weirdly-framed bullet hells that come out
might be worth putting out a list of shoot em ups that aren't bullet hells
I see they're keeping the Shikigami proximity multiplier. Meaning the closer your character is to a bullet when you destroy an enemy the higher the point multiplier (max x8). So to score well, you pretty much have to be shoulder-to-shoulder with bullets as much as possible. Good times. It looks like they may also be doing character pairs again, where the between-stage story dialogue can change drastically depending on which characters are chosen. Neat. If only they didn't go with the cutesy presentation though, it's not for everyone, obviously. Still, I'm gonna keep my eyes on this one. It could be a sleeper hit.
An anime-inspired shoot-em-up? I'm almost reminded of Otomedius and its sequel Otomedius Excellent, which were both spinoffs of Gradius.
@ancientlii Off the top of my head: 7 out of 8 of the Konami Arcade Classics Collection games are non-bullet hell shmups. 3 of which are Gradius-related (Nemesis, Life Force, Gradius II). There's also SEGA AGES Lightening Force (a.k.a. Thunder Force IV). Coming soon to the west, SEGA AGES Fantasy Zone. Some ACA NEOGEO shmups: Ghost Pilots, Pulstar, Blazing Star, Aero Fighters 2 and 3, Zed Blade, Alpha Mission II, and Last Resort. From Arcade Archives: Atomic Robo Kid, Terra Cresta, X Multiply, Darius, Star Force, the recently released and awesome In The Hunt. Then there's R-Type Dimensions EX which has R-Type 1 and 2. The Psikyo shmups released by ZeroDiv like the Strikers series, Zero Gunner 2, Gunbird 1 and 2, the Samurai Aces games, and Dragon Blaze, which are all manic shmups that have fast bullets. Not quite bullet hell which have slower, but more complex patterns. I know I'm missing a bunch, but that's just to get started.
@YANDMAN
I like your attitude.
No thanks. I bought Raiden 5 and Ikaruga. That's more than enough for me.
@masterLEON this guy shmups!
Other non-bullet hell shmup or quasi-shmups:
RIVE
Graceful Explosion Machine
Space Dave
Sine Mora EX
Steredenn
Switch ’n’ Shoot
And especially: Super Hydorah! All hail Hydorah!
@masterLEON thank you, fast bullets are fine, just don't want to dodge by a inch or else run into a different bullet.
@Moistnado
This is a Switch exclusive that will get ported to the PS4, developed by one of the greatest shmup developers, i don't see where you get your cynism.
@bluesdance Let's bring in some run 'n guns!
Metal Slug 1, 2 , 3, X
Contra anniversary
Enter the Gungeon (does have an actual Bullet Hell)
@masterLEON tension bullet system is classic. I did like castle 2 and 3 with the 2 player cutscenes, using 2 players on 1 wiimote was great. Did like Kohtaro and Gennojo, fun manga too. Time gal was my favorite cameo. Hope there are good characters here though the all girls diversion means I'll miss out on a lotta favorites.
Simple said its Shikigami no Shiro / Castle Shikigami repackaged with new characters. ... Bullethell.. urgh.
@EmirParkreiner the video had ps4 controls on it and large parts of the screen are just wallpaper. The gameplay area is under half the screen. These are just facts.
@Moistnado tate mode
boring to me, i'll pass
@Moistnado
I don't know why NintendoLife chose to show a video of the upcoming PS4 version, the Nintendo Switch version is available since June 2018 so it clearly came first.
Using a screen orientation like this is normal for a vertically scrolling shoot'em up and has nothing to do with phones, it has to with arcade cabinets with vertical screens.
@EmirParkreiner - you do know that most TVs are horizontal right? Poor design choice for a game people play on a horizontal screen. It is not an arcade port is it? Seen a few lazy cell phone ports do this but I believe you when say it is not the case here. I personally would rather the action filled the screen the game was playing on but I guess it is nostalgic.
@Moistnado It has nothing to do with nostalgia, it's called a subgenre. Playing it on a horizontal screen is traditional, sure, but if you're not stuck in the past, you can easily rotate your TV/monitor (people do hook up the Switch to monitors, fyi) with a mount or careful bookending. Hell, the Switch natively supports TATE view. On top of all that, YOKO (horizontal) moves all of the HUD elements off the screen so it's not cluttered.
I also realize how old this article is. I just found this game now.
As for the game itself, I'll likely pass, at least at launch. A bit too anime and was never a fan of chibi characters.
@Kilroy So an arcade screen orientation has nothing to do with nostalgia? Thank you for your unique perspective. I'm guessing your TV is really small? Your suggestion that it is easy for most people to rotate their TVs is also... interesting.
@Moistnado 🙄 Okay.
