Update: The Pokémon Company has now shared music from Toby Fox in the game. You can give it a listen below and read a statement from the man himself right here.
Original Article (Fri 1st Nov, 2019 10:30 GMT): The Pokémon series has been home to numerous musical masterpieces over the years - who can forget the tracks that play as you whoosh down the Cycling Road or as you challenge the Elite Four - and the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield are sure to follow that trend in style. This time around, it turns out that the core team has had some assistance from none other than Toby Fox.
Best known as the creator of super-popular RPG Undertale, Fox is not only a game developer, but also a talented musician. He actually composed all of the music for Undertale, and more recently shared his skills on Game Freak's Little Town Hero soundtrack. Clearly, Game Freak was happy enough with his work to sign him up for this major release.
Fox notes that he was asked to compose a track for the upcoming games, describing it as a "huge honour". He goes on to say, "By the way, it's not like a main track or anything. I just thought it was cool".
Here's a piece composed by Fox for Undertale:

Toby has a trend of being the contributor of some disappointing games (other than undertale and deltarune of course)
@Doofenshmirtz
Don't confuse star with contributor.
@RupeeClock my bad
Still never played Undertale. Lots of people seem to like it though.
Not the biggest Undertale fan, but this guy's come pretty far in a short number of years. Kudos to him.
Sansmania is in full swing.
Pretty cool, I do think he has just as much talent as a composer as a director.
Such a talented musician! I hope his talent gets recognised more and his compositions start to appear in more games.
Well, this is something to look forward to! I love Toby Fox's music, even in crap games like YIIK (Into The Mind isn't his best piece, but was still enjoyable).
Okay? Good for him, but GF's constant emphasis on his contributions is beginning to make me feel a little weary.
@Galenmereth I’m guessing you also hated the music in Earthbound? He pulled a lot of design cues from that.
"I’m guessing you also hated the music in Earthbound? He pulled a lot of design cues from that."
I love the Beatles, but that doesn't mean that every band that draws "design cues" from the fab four is automatically good. What is your point exactly?
@andywitmyer
Maybe don't abstract things for the sake of example, and then play dumb on purpose right after. Makes you look somewhat aggressive there.
Eh. OK. Kind of weird how this indie developer has gotten so comfy with Game Freak. Good for him, I guess.
Undertale is a pretty terrific game, at least, and the music is pretty neat. GOTY of 2015 for me. Didn't really care much for Deltarune Ch. 1, though.
Call him overrated, or whatever. He has to be worth something to be asked to compose for a game or two by a famous company. Music featured in smash Bros. It's all subjective, and the overall consensus by professionals with years, even decades of experience in that field, is that he's good. Good enough to be featured at least.
@Doofenshmirtz i mean it's not out yet.
@Manah I mean this is very clearly a result of them being impressed by his work on Little Town Hero, so I can see why they'd ask him to compose a track for Pokemon.
I love the soundtrack of Undertale. I often listen to it when studying or painting because it's so relaxing. This guy's got talent; I'm glad he's getting recognition from the bigger companies.
@PikaPlayz and that matters...how? That's like saying someone could say "this game looks fantastic and the greatest game of 2019 with no flaws at all" and that meaning nothing because it's not out. Or does that not count since it's positive and not negative
Interesting! I can't wait to hear the whole soundtrack in fact, the only track
I listened so far was the Pokémon Rock theme of the first trailer.
When is the "Undertale is good" meme gonna end?
@PBandSmelly Being a hipster follows no logic. It's all about bitterness and fake self-importance.
I don't care if you guys don't like Toby's games, you cannot tell me that Megalovania doesn't slap.
Noice. Good on Game Freak for recognizing talent
@PBandSmelly I admit o was turned off from buying undertale because of the memes and awful fanbase but it's actually a great game. I loved the combat and story not to mention the humor. Too bad normies ruin stuff
@LinkSword dude ppl can enjoy stuff. But I do agree when certain fanbases are actively annoying for the memes. But undertale isnt really a meme anymore. Except for the ppl reacting to sans I guess but other than that when have their been undertale memes this year
Wow , this article got a bit toxic in the last week or so.
@Sandro89 Idk if this is a meme. People can enjoy things. Now enjoying something for the memes or being an annoying fanbase is bad but I dont think ppl enjoying undertale is a meme
Wasn't a fan of Undertale, and a lot of the music was forgettable to me anyways.
...Well, besides that dog theme. lol
But yeah I couldn't stay interested in the game for some reason.
This is actually really quite cool. It somehow merges the two worlds amazingly and does in fact bop pretty hard.
It's a pretty good track. Definitely a big improvement over the other Sword and Shield tracks that I've heard.
Cant wait to hear Megalovania while battling the Elite Four
@Doofenshmirtz
I think Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Taiko no Tatsujin, Little Town Hero, and Pokémon Sword/Shield are not disappointing games. They're freakin' huge!
The people who don't love UNDERTALE simply haven't played it long enough.
A lot of hate here in the comments (as usual I guess). I like the track, it has a bit of an f-zero vibe to me.
@Gravitron lol I hope.
Sounds good to me
I've never been a fan of his music, but this one is okay.
@SKTTR Edit: "The people who don't love UNDERTALE simply haven't played it long enough"
Or perhaps (and maybe I'm just crazy) people have different tastes and preferences and can like and dislike different things. And I'm saying this as someone who likes Undertale.
I'd say he's a good fit for the Pokemon series, I like this.
Seems kinda dull? I was waiting for its melody to get beefed up but it mostly kept the same tone throughout the track and it personally left me bored with it.
@SKTTR "The people who don't love UNDERTALE simply haven't played it long enough"
Thats a very silly close minded reasoning for why you think people dont like this game (people like me I guess).
Reminds me of the theme song from The Running Man.
It's not, but I can imagine Richard Dawson coming on stage to it.
It's compositionally great, but the instruments do sound a little more on the synthesized end - I really like the theme as a whole, though. Either way, though, it's really cool to see how far Toby's come, and that's as someone who hasn't gotten deep into Undertale.
An overrated game creator hired to make mediocre music for an overhyped mediocre at best game. It's like a match made in heaven.
Toby Fox is becoming this generation’s Rob Hubbard
@PKBegley you have Ness for your pfp I'm surprised you dont like Undertale
As long as they don’t remove the roguelike elements from gold/silver
Game freak must really like Toby... good for him!
Sounds awesome! What will it be? Rival music maybe? Totally sounds like battle music of some kind!
Toby Fox is a very talented individual and I’m sure he did a great job. It’s too bad that he was asked to help now that Pokémon is falling under warranted criticism for much less content than previous generations.
@Majora101 disliking something is fine, but coming with big words saying the game is "awful" with no explanation sounds like the exact thing you're mentioning, but on the opposite side. All these "Undertale sucks" sounds like they're on a bandwagon on the occasion just to look different from everyone because disliking the game is the least popular thing.
Undertale "invading" other games isn't forced by the creator you know, other game studio, devs, etc. are looking to feature him because of his proven success, not because the creator is likely begging to.
I actually look forward to see if Toby Fox will hold up on the future or he will just fade away. Then we can see if he indeed was a one-trick pony or not.
@Heavyarms55 undertale is kind of spoiled, was shorter than i thought it'd be and i kind of felt like i saw all of it before playing, like it's fault is that it was overshared. if you're unfamilar with it at all should be good.
really liked delta rune since i was able to experience it 1st hand
@Majora101 fair enough.
My main problem I see is that people overhyped the game by saying it's "the best game ever made", and when other people who isn't on the genre plays or the general gamer public takes a look into it, they are disappointed, because the game has it's niche and not for everyone.
For the main twist you identify, I disagree on some parts. I'm willing to cut some slack on the game due to the workforce behind the game (1 person made the game, which is commendable). While it's true that other better known games have done that better, what Undertale accomplishes is alright, and in your case it doesn't clicks with you, which is okay (because indeed, no one is/should be forced to enjoy a game) but I feel dismissing the entire game is weird. (I speak for myself; I just pretty much liked the soundtrack of the game and some combat sections)
For the last part, I say blame the ignorance of people rather than the game. It doesn't happens here either, see other cases like Fortnite using existing famous dances and kids seeing them first there then thinking they took it from Fortnite.
While Undertale has taken inspiration from gameplay elements that exists elsewhere, it has it's fair share of good ideas by combining existing ones by providing a new way to enjoy them.
@SKTTR yeah I really don't think you understood what I ment, you see, little town hero was an absolute dumpster fire, and pokemon sword and shield is going to be a boring mess. Plus, I didn't say every single game he did music for was bad, you're just putting words in my mouth, like I said, LTH was bad, and SwSh looks really disappointing and boring. I didn't mention undertale, deltarune, smash, and whatever the hell that other game is you said.
And I think I know what you might say next "well you mentioned just "besides undertale and deltarune of course" in your comment" in my original comment I said the "star" well, as the guy that I forgot the name of who has a snivy pfp has corrected me on, what I ment was "contributor" I originally put star there because game freak was treating his appearance in LTH and SwSh like it was the best part of the games that I thought he would make multiple tracks for each game, and toby has made tons if not, all of the music for undertale and deltarune, so he was that star of those games, so I just made a mistake
@PickledKong64 I never understand the comparisons with Earthbound and Undertale, with that notion that they would like Undertale because their avatar is Ness. Aside from some superficial similarities: some nods and audio cues, the games are very different experiences with totally different tones and mechanics. Earthbound had some sly jokes to break up the encroaching darkness of the mysterious villian, Undertale has full on comic relief. Earthbound exemplifies brevity in video game writing where Undertale relishes in giving the player extra time with every character and fleshing out every moment to the max. Earthbound is a traditional jrpg shoved into a modern setting with some novelties, Undertale is a unique gameplay woven into fantasy tropes. Earthbound's music is loaded with pop culture references and jabs at cliche rpg music, Undertale's is like a concept album with its motif repeating in almost every song. But two characters wearing striped shirts, I guess.
@Coalescence the main reason people compare the two is because toby fox was a massive fan of earthbound, and he was inspired to first make an amazing Halloween hack for earthbound, which then leads him to make his own game, undertale, and he spread little Easter eggs in undertale about earthbound, like you said
It sounds Tobe'y and Pokemon'ey enough. I like it
Absolutely gorgeous!
@PickledKong64 I have no idea what this has to do with what I said here, but you do you I guess.
It has that same familiar Toby Fox vibe! Good and memorable, as usual. A lot of his songs are earworms; the man is a master at utilizing repetition effectively.
@Heavyarms55 Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is a postgame track. I definitely agree about this being some sort of battle theme though, there’s no way it isn’t!
@MH4 Well someone else might know, but I don't. lol
@PickledKong64 It's not that I don't like it. I certainly did enjoy playing Undertale. But it is nowhere near as amazing as people say it is.
Plus yeah it kind of overshadowed the game it's based on (which also happens to be my favourite video game and far superior). On the one hand, I'm mad about that. But on the other maybe that's for the best. The last thing I'd want EarthBound being is overhyped and tarnished by its fandom like Undertale is.
@Coalescence I played undertale right after playing Earthbound and Mother 3 and i have to say i get the same vibes but they definently aren't the same. Earthbound feels way more grounded but i just assumed this guy was a Mother fan and he would like undertale. Or hes a ness main and is a self proclaimed "Mother fan" like most ness mains
@Ardisan @Zoya
It's just my experience, you know, with the friends I have and the gaming communities I'm part of. Once people get the gist of UNDERTALE (the unfolding suprises and innovations that are too great to spoil here and that people can only experience if they invested a certain amount of time into it), they will at least appreciate it a whole lot more.
I haven't found a person yet who played through UNDERTALE and didn't appreciate it for what it does or didn't outright love it.
There are only four reasons I can think of where UNDERTALE can be underappreciated:
1. You haven't played it long enough (The first couple of hours are kinda slow and do not foreshadow its greatness).
2. You're not an RPG fan.
3. It's your first RPG and you have nothing to compare it to.
4. You're not fluent in English or Japanese and therefore don't understand integral parts of it.
@SKTTR You must be capping. Lmao.
It sounds pretty good.
