Coming from Lab Zero and Skybound Games, lovely looking 2D fighter Skullgirls 2nd Encore is dropping on Switch today after ducking and diving out of the reach of Nintendo consoles since its debut way back in 2012.
Yes, the game got an 'Encore edition' two years later, but this is the first time it's appearing on a Nintendo platform. This slickly animated fighter is known for its bountiful personality and appealing to both fighting veterans and total newbies alike. Having dabbled with it on other platforms in the past, we can confirm that it's a beautiful looking thing, but don't take our word for it - check out the brand new launch trailer above.
The Switch version supports online and local two-player and has all the DLC the game received elsewhere, with new characters, a fully voiced Story Mode and various other trimmings. Here are a handful of screenshots:
Switch is steadily amassing a nice little collection of fighting games (in addition to the all-conquering Smash Bros., of course) and assuming Skullgirls can maintain the same level of quality we've seen it reach on other platforms, this could well be one to add to your library of brawlers. Keep an eye out for our review in the near future.
It's available for download on the Nintendo eShop as we write for £19.99 / €24.99 / $24.99 depending on where you reside. Let us know if you plan on picking it up below.

I've been waiting forever for this to come to switch. I really wish it wasn't releasing in this busy window though.... Guess I'm not eating out this week lol
Cool game. Played it on my PS4, then played it on my vita. I don't think i need to play it again but newcomers should go for it.
It's an amazing game but the Switch version suffers from terrible audio glitches that make voices in battle play dozens of times overlapped at random (Often very loud) volumes.
Even worse, the story is not voiced, despite that being a feature on other consoles and being advertised on Switch.
I want Skullgirls to have a more active community, but I just can't recommend the Switch version as it stands.
Pass I already have the pc version.
And more then enough beat em ups as it is.
This is one of my favorite fighting games ever. Can't believe it finally arrived on the switch, it's been forever since the announcement.
Quick question for anyone interested, what's your favorite d-pad for fighting games on the switch. Ignoring the possibility of buying an arcade stick. I'm really on the fence on this one and curious about what others think.
This fighting game is criminally underrated. If you haven't played it yet, please do yourself a favor and PLAY IT!!! Awesome game with fantastic music to boot.
"Smashes it's way to Switch"
some people: Does that mea-...
Sakurai: no...
@JamesJose7
I just use the pro controller really.
Or the joysticks on the joycons, like a heathen.
@JamesJose7 I have an adaptor to use the DualShock 4 on my switch. I also have an 8bitdo SNES controller.
@KitsuneNight
I've only used analog sticks my whole life
Quite happy about this. Haven't played Skullgirls since 2013-14, so looking to grab this as soon as the money gods bless me with some cash. With Christmas shopping to do next week, I can squeeze 2 games outta the 10 on my Would Like Immediately list.
@JamesJose7
The 8bitdo SN30 pro (and other variants) has a great dpad and works well with fighters. It's also great for pretty much anything on Switch. The M30 with the 6 button layout is probably the best for fighting games though.
@KitsuneNight Are you using the sticks on the pro controller or the d pad?
@AxeltheCorvikni how good is the dualshock d-pad for this, I've never felt comfortable with that one
@geox30 I do have the SN30 pro and like using it. I got a bit skeptical of people saying it's prompt to miss inputs on the d-pad, although I don't really know if I haven't experienced it or haven't noticed.
@JamesJose7
D-pad
When using the joy cons I use the stick.
Looking forward to the physical release later this year.
You can pick this up on Steam for like 9.99 so the switch price is a bit steep, but it’s great to see more indie fighters on the switch regardless. This game still has quite a big player base too so it won’t be too difficult to find online matches. THE CHURCH OF BIG BAND IS UPON THEE!!
@JamesJose7
Didn't notice anything weird also. You could try the M30 though, cause its only 25-30€ and they say it's great.
Electro swing, nice and fitting for a 20s stylised game. Might pick it up, or wait for a patch if it needs one.
I got an email from Skybound Games that they will be sending me my pre-orders this week which will include some collector's stuffs on it along with a download code for the game. They also mention that the physical copy of the game will come later in December so definitely can't wait for that.
I liked it on PC, but not enough to double dip. At least not right away.
I haven't even tried Mecha Fortune.
@JamesJose7 8bit do SN30 Pro is great. I don't know what inputs this needs, but the pokken pad is actually quite good too and you can find em for good prices
@Minfinity I keep hearing good things about the pokken pad. I'll definitely try it out. Thanks!
