Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 2nd - 8th September, revealing that the country has once again been gripped with Monster Hunter fever.
Monster Hunter: World's Iceborne expansion released in Japan this week, and it's safe to say that it has entirely dominated the charts. A Master Edition release containing the base game and the expansion sold more than 200,000 copies, and the Collector's Package - made up of digital code purchases at retail stores - has secured it another 44,160 sales. Digital sales made directly from the PS Store aren't included, so we dread to think how many copies have been bought in total.
As such, Nintendo's evergreen hits have had to shuffle down the pecking order a little this week. Astral Chain, last week's number two, has fallen to sixth.
Here are the top 10 (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
1) [PS4] Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne Master Edition (Capcom) {2019.09.06} - 206.156 / NEW
2) [PS4] Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne Collector's Package (Capcom) {2019.09.06} - 44.160 / NEW
3) [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) {2019.06.28} - 18.296 / 600.297
4) [PS4] NBA 2K20 (Take-Two Interactive Japan) {2019.09.06} - 13.461 / NEW
5) [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) {2018.12.07} - 10.611 / 3.243.816
6) [NSW] Astral Chain (Nintendo) {2019.08.30} - 9.129 / 41.365
7) [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (Bandai Namco Games) {2019.07.25} - 9.018 / 153.154
8) [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} - 8.850 / 2.440.455
9) [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) {2018.06.21} - 8.221 / 915.471
10) [NSW] Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Nintendo) {2019.07.26} - 6.255 / 235.352
The Switch console itself didn't have quite the same level of success as last week, but that new, revised model is still driving sales at a very healthy rate. Monster Hunter has also helped the PS4 to have a much stronger week than usual. Here are this week's figures, followed by lifetime sales in brackets:
Nintendo Switch: 77,392 (8,920,340)
Playstation 4: 20,667 (7,086,495)
Play Station 4 Pro: 13,061 (1,260,555)
Xbox One X: 36 (16,487)
Xbox One S: 29 (18,897)
New Nintendo 2DS LL: 1,357 (1,074,761)
New Nintendo 3DS: 161 (5,883,887)
PlayStation Vita: 34 (5,862,486)
Any surprises this week? Let us know in the comments.

No surprise. MHWorld is an amazing game. I haven't bought the expansion yet but I'm planning to.
Mainstream / hardcore gamers will definitely keep looking games like that.
But, i keep walking on my way, looking for hidden gems / underrated games but worthy and not following the mainstream.
Played it and haven't touched it. It's not that amazing as fans makes of it. Well if you go left with the massa that's what happens. I prefer other type of RPG. I just couldn't be bothered with some quests... got a bit annoying though. Well each his own
Looks like Switch will surpass 9 million units sold in Japan in time for the launch of the Lite.
Monster Hunter World Iceborne will see 50%+ of its sales digitally as DLC purchases. With that being said, it wont be anywhere near as successful as Monster Hunter 4G or XX.
Well, no duh. It's MonHun, and, based on what I've heard, this is a particularly excellent and ambitious expansion.
@Alucard83
"Played it and haven't touched it."
...what?
Oh wow. I bought it digital myself, I like retail but not really for an expansions (unless stand-alone like Torna).
Either way, Capcom did a fantastic job on this one. Both Quality and Quantity... loving it! 👍
@Anti-Matter So if a game is popular it is not good?
Also there is a reason some games are underrated.
mk8 only sold 244.455 life time?
Makes sense to be honest, it's been quite a while since Japan has gotten a MH game on a Nintendo platform (over 2 years now, MHXX was 2017 for Japan) so World remains a PS4 system seller.
@jockmahon gotta remember. its a port of a wii u game. Most already got their fill in japan.
@OscarHTX
Sometimes i found something surprising or new experiences from hidden gems / underrated games. They amused me more than typical mainstream games.
@jockmahon Seems like this was a mistake from our source which has since been edited. That was definitely incorrect!
I tried it on the Wii U, and the item recipes and everything just got in the way of what I wanted. DMC5 gave it right to me!
That said, I absolutely cannot deny this franchise's power and quality, and there's no way that Hunter isn't Fighter #5 or in Fighters Pass 2 somewhere.
MHW is awesome and while I haven't bought Iceborne yet, everything I've seen looked amazing. They brought back so many fan favourite monsters
IceBourn only managed to enter UK charts at 20 which is where the charts end and drop out. So these numbers might not be as good globally as Capcom would have wanted. With such a massive 13million install base from MHworld.
200k from Japan seems low to me?
@Anti-Matter ohh snap, here we go again with another anti-matured critics from the one and only anti-matter, stick to your underrated gems and leave us the mainstream gamers to be happy with what we're getting, than trying to corrupt our mindsets so as to see things from your own point of view. Hell no from me. And for the 100 times please no need broadcasting your hate for rated-M games,
Also i get it for a 35yrs old dressed up in a Pokemon trainers custom won't understand a line being an adult.
@Alucard83 "played it and haven't touched it"
You either have or you haven't.
Astral Chain physical sales are really down in Japan.....
MHW pushed hardware very strong for the PS4
I enjoyed Monster Hunter World, but it's one of those games I put like 90 hours in and was good. It was still the first and only Monster Hunter game I've enjoyed. I had a hard time getting into the switch version, I just enjoy all the things in world that made the series more friendly to non hardcore hunter players. I hope we see a new switch game that brings in more of the new mechanics and quality of life changes from World.
@Tantani From what I've read,the physical version of Astral Chain is a lot more expensive than the digital version in Japan. Not sure why that is but as of yesterday, it's number 1 on their Eshop.
@Anti-Matter Some games are mainstream for a reason. Monster Hunter is a game that brings people together. You'd be suprised how much fun it is, I didn't pick it up until a year after release and I am glad I did. This game has as much charm and love put into it as any of Nintendo's flagship title. If Capcom chose a mascot I wouldn't be suprised if a Palico was considered.
Iceborne is DLC done right
While Monster Hunter World is an awesome game and having two expansions for it are cool, not releasing a complete version of it on Switch for the Japanese market won't save the game from being on the chart for too long. It'll be on the chart for just this month or two and probably disappear once the Japanese audience turn their attention towards Pokemon Sword and Shield.
Still don't understand how Mario Kart 8 is still in the top ten charts and how nearly 10,000 people still buy it every week. I mean, there's a point when everyone will have it, right ? Do people accidentally eat the game card or something to have to buy a new copy ?
@echoplex in a week that 70000+ switches were sold I find that mk8 sold poorly...
Monster Hunter World Iceborne is absolutely, positively fantastic. That darn game is my biggest gaming addiction in a very long time. Hopefully Switch owners will get something MHW that rivals the other consoles.
@Zuljaras it's the hipster mentality I guess ?
I just got Monster Hunter World a little while ago so it'll be some time before I reach Iceborne content. I also have a huge backlog I'm trying to work through.
I could never understand the popularity of Monster Hunter games. I got a couple of them but they never did anything for me, so many other games I would rather be playing.
@Alucard83 how did you play it but not touch it?
@PBandSmelly that’s going to be the exclusive switch content
I like MHW but I’m nowhere near being to the point where I need MORE content,I haven’t done half of what’s in the original game yet
This expansion is going to make me go back to MHW. Looks so good.
@Rpg-lover
Monster Hunter World was rated Teen, not rated M.
The more I play Monster Hunter World the more I like it. It's not surperior in every way when compared to previous entries, but it's a very good Monster Hunter. I'll put at least another 150 hours into it. I can't wait for Iceborne to release on PC!
@Anti-Matter yep and Pokemon is about as mainstream as you can get.
I think the point most are making is that you come on here and bad mouth anything which doesn’t fit into your tunnel visioned view of the world and it gets a bit boring.
MH is sooo huge in Japan. Astral Chain is still doing good.
@Edelgard peak players still hit 90,000 to 70,000 on a given month for Monster Hunter World on PC!... still can't believe they went crazy for a MH game
Unfortunate PC community needs to wait a bit. Hopefully Capcom does a good job optimizing it!
Not a huge fan of World. Put a lot of time into it but really only because I had a few people to play with but it wore on me quicker than most MonHun games do.
Guys stop the @Anti-Matter hate. This is a comment section for everybody to give their opinions. You shouldn't tell him not to express his opinions just because you do not agree with them. Even if nobody agrees with him I think that his opinions should not be dismissed as stupid or immature just because they come from a guy with a pokemon profile picture that is not very good at writing english (since English is not his language).
I don't think he meant that all mainstream games are trash. He just said that he doesn't like this particular game and that hidden gems amuse him more than something like MH ever could.
I greatly prefer kyle hyde games or solatorobo to many switch and ps4 AAA games so I partially agree with him. And I believe that many of the people that read this comment have some if not many such "hidden gems" that they remember fondly.
I don't want to be anyone's lawyer so I'll stop here.
@echoplex Apparently, Mario Kart 8 has a very high attach rate. Chances are a large chunk of the Switch buyers each week is getting the game.

Monster Hunter in Smash, when ?
I honestly expected Fire Emblem to sell a lot more
@Kokusho Already happened, technically.
Of course new Monster Hunter stuff would beat out games that have been on the market for several weeks.
I'm just glad to see MM2 sold better than that gambling game disguised as basketball.
Also nice to see Fire Emblem squeak back up into the top 10. On my second playthrough of that now.
Switch already closing in on 9M sold in Japan, good stuff. 😎
@echoplex - Nintendo tried so hard.... made the games bitter flavored......still people kept eating them and buying more.....all Nintendo could do was collect the money and wallow in their own grief
I tried MH on Switch and World on PS4. They're just not for me. MHW looks really good though (graphically). If I'm grinding, I'm grinding for a purpose.
@AndreaF96 If he doesnt like it,he doesnt have to post. It gets super annoying when he comes in to bad mouth anything that does fit into his weird immature mindset.
@Anti-Matter MH had always been a hidden gem/underrated until World came, so that's not really a valid argument against it.
@Anti-Matter Can you teach me how to be so edgy?
@BMOC
Well...
Be selective, not easily follow something that doesn't match with your genuine interest, be confident with your choices, not afraid to be different.
Sadly, the only reason I ever even played Monster Hunter was because it's so much easier to sink hundreds of hours into portable games for me. Hopefully we get a better Switch MH offering than a 3ds port...
@Anti-Matter Keep doing you man. That's awesome. You'll be the one playing donut County and Wandersong and Goose Game. The great thing is, whether you want to follow the mainstream or play underrated indies, the Switch basically has you covered. That freedom of choice is awesome.
@Anti-Matter spoken like a real hipster.
@Anti-Matter Thank you for the advice, I shall go forth into the world and live as you suggest
Somebody accused Anti-Matter of being immature. I think exploiting the fact that he doesn't understand sarcasm in english is not really mature either.
What he said is actually really true. How many of you did buy a game that received very positive reviews even though you deep down knew it wasn't actually for you and then ended up regretting buying tha game? I knew It happend to me.
@Trajan so you believe that people should only post good things about games in comment sections?
@AndreaF96 So you say that it is perfectly fine to go in threads of games I don't like and post there? Instead of just not going there?
So lets say my OPINION on those games I don't like is important and all other people should see it?
I don't like kiddie games without depth so I DONT go there and post because I don't think that my opinion is important for those people there.
You are right everyone should have the right of opinion but they also may be mocked for it and THAT IS FINE so please DEAL with it!
@Zuljaras seconded, Andrea failed to realize that.
No need going to an article that doesn't interest you, just to anger the ones that love it with unintelligent views like anti-matter does. Infact i call that trolling.
I once bought the Wii version. Couldn't get into it. I hope one day Japan will release something that isn't hugely over the top in everything. But I suppose my tastes are the niches of niches.
@Zuljaras Nobody should be mocked for their opinions.
@Rpg-lover It's just his point of view and is not inherently contradictory so I don't see it as something "unintelligent" but just as something I don't (always) agree with. There is a difference between the two things.
@AndreaF96 Actually If I go in thread I don't belong and start saying stuff like "I don't like this game it is stupid! Only a man-child would play this ****!" I would totally expect people to mock me because it is a dumb thing to do.
I just don't get that mentality of "people should be aware of my preferences because I am important!".
@Zuljaras The first part of your hypothetical comment does not bother me. Insulting other people just because they like a game (the second part) is wrong in my opinion. And it doesn't seem to be what Anti-Matter has done here. Moreover, who says that just because you don't like a certain game you don't belong to a certain comment section? If you have read the article and are willing to express your opinion then you belong to the comment section. At least, that is how I see it.
I really don't see why a comment that criticises a game someone don't like can bother a person so much.
Have we really reached a point in which we need to be surrounded only by ideas that we agree with because we have lost the ability to simply accept that other people may not agree with us and DARE saying so?
@AndreaF96 It does bother people here because it is not the first time.
Using threads as a stage to put on your preferences will not be met with warm comments. And this is happening very often.
And repeting the same stuff over and over just so people can remember what you like and dislike is getting older every time.
@AndreaF96 i can see you're taken this albeit personal to say the least.
Anti-matter behaves like a troll for crying out loud, it's not about getting misunderstood or whatever, he always goes into a thread knowing fully well it's none of his business and keep yapping about on how he doesn't like Teen, M-rated games and so on, expecting nobody to get offended by that on so many threads he posted it on(especially to people who liked that type of games will see it offending their choices as well).
Moreso about given unintelligent views, yes I'm very correct in that assessment, assuming he used to playing those games(m-rated) and comes on a thread and give his reviews on why he hated the games then that's another case, but in his own case, he has zero interest on the said genres, and nobody is forcing him to like those games in the very beginning, so why keep going on about it in every thread relating to Rated M, it's like saying the rest of us that does should as well quit and follow in his footsteps, so i don't see the need of coming here to tell us he hates those games all the time.
we all have games we hate as well but don't make a fuss about it cause we're not buying or playing it. I myself don't like kiddy games but i don't go to those threads just to post things that those who likes it will be offended about.
So if you care so much for anti-matter then you can as well educate him on how to approach a thread he solely doesn't have interest on, and the choices of words he uses in approaching them matters alot. Or face being ridiculed.
@Rpg-lover
"assuming he used to playing those games(m-rated)"
Correction.
I NEVER & Will Never want to play any rated M games. Period.
Btw, i don't hate Monster Hunter so i choose to keep walking on my way (ignore those games) & keep looking for underrated / hidden gems (less popular games that matched to my preferences)
Got it ?
@BarefootBowser I couldn't get into it either. Felt way too slow for me.
This is just INSANE! Japan is no longer a handheld focused country, the home consoles Switch and PS4 are dominating the 3DS and Vita! It's amazing that after 30 years of Game Boy and DS lines dominating Japan that a home console would take over the market for the first time since the Famicom, which debuted before Game Boy! WOW! I never thought I'd see only home consoles dominating Japan, and handhelds nowhere to be seen! Mark this era down as a new time for Japan, handhelds are officially dead there, home consoles finally rule Japan and the West!!!!
@Anti-Matter Monster Hunter World is rated T, not M.
@gamefreak77 The Switch is also a handheld.
