Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Japan in May, meaning that it has now outsold all other platforms for 15 months in a row.
Famitsu has released a report containing data which combines all chart figures released throughout May (which technically covers 29th April - 26th May). According to Famitsu's estimates, Nintendo's machine shifted 141,953 units over that time in Japan, comfortably beating the sales of its closest rival, the PlayStation 4.
The report also covers the best-selling games and publishers of the month. We've shared each category for you below.
Best-selling hardware, May 2019 (Japan)
1) Nintendo Switch - 141,953 (Last month: 183,397 sales, 1st place)
2) Playstation 4 (including PS4 Pro) - 49, 205 (Last month: 51,177 sales, 2nd place)
Best-selling software, May 2019 (Japan)
1) Days Gone (PS4) - Sony Interactive Entertainment - 56,689
2) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch) - Nintendo - 51,011
3) Minecraft (Switch) - Microsoft Japan - 42,774
4) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) - Nintendo - 40,605
5) New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch) - Nintendo - 36,329
Number of sales achieved by publisher, May 2019 (Japan)
1) Nintendo - 326,000
2) Bandai Namco Entertainment - 88,000
3) Sony Interactive Entertainment - 84,000
It looks like Switch's success will continue until a new hardware rival enters the fray - perhaps the upcoming PS5? Either way, the future sure looks bright for Nintendo in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Japanese love small things, don't they?
It still amazes me how well Minecraft is selling after all that time.
The switch sales fall massively while the PS4 sales remained about the same
I wonder why?
The sales included digital or physical only?
@Tantani Well, there haven't exactly been any new 1st party titles in a while.
@tech7
I was wondering for Japanese gamers liking Minecraft with its cubic textures more than Dragon Quest Builders 2 with All the cute realistic shapes and even better looking than Minecraft.
I get this sounds cool but isn't north America where the most systems are sold these days? Isn't that the place nintendo really wants to win?
Who wouldn't? Sure not the strongest handheld (sure it can be docked) but many people are playing it undocked. I will get one in the future as well. But still waiting for a bit more pricedrop since i'm also forced to get SSD cards and pro controller etc. still 400 euro. So not digging it for now
@sixrings for Sony and Nintendo, Japan is the second or third biggest territory so it is a very important for both companies
I think Nintendo is winning currently in north as well
@Alucard83
"but many people are playing it undocked"
The reason why Switch sold better in Japan.
Japanese people loves portability.
@Tantani Is it though? Out of the 32 million Switches sold, 8 million come from Japan. Same with Sony but the fraction is 8/98.
Japan loves mobile technology so there is no surprise here really, playstation has never sold huge there.
Saying the the Switch sells very well in Japan only because it is a portable device is not entirely accurate.
Yes, portability is a huge advantage but what ultimately sells the console are the games. And the Japanese feel an affinity for Nintendo that Sony with its Western approach can't match.
Also, the fact that the PS4 is already at the end of its life is a factor to be considered.
Minecraft is just so amazing. And there is so much you can do with it. I'm not really a fan of modded Minecraft myself, but I do love to install some shader packs and high resolution resource packs. And all the minigame servers people have made are fun to play.
@NintendoFan4Lyf while I agree with the lack of post launch support, I think that you still had plenty of content in DQB thanks to Terra Incognito.
microsoft may not be great this generation. But it's still in business and was booming during the 360 Era. Both generations were completely ignored by Japan but business is still good.
It’s been posting crazy good numbers there. They certainly love handheld systems.
@BlueOcean Projecting from experience are we? ,
Gonna rant here for a sec.
Getting really tired of people saying Nintendo portables sell well in Japan because Japanese people like portability. Look, first off you don't speak for them. 2nd that's only half true. Some might like it because of the brand, some might like it for something else entirely. Sure it's convenient for them, but same goes for a lot of people on any country. There is currently no factual evidence, at least as far as I know, that these are selling like hotcakes because "the Japanese love their portables."
You might argue: "Well, do YOU know why it sells?!"
No, I dont. And that's the point, no one really knows why. --unless someone actually do some real world statistical research.
"There are a lot of articles interviewing locals and say they prefer the portability". Let me ask, did the journalist actually conduct a survey to a large group of gamers? Personally I can't find any.
Right now I guess what we SHOULD say is "I guess SOME Japanese folks like their portables".
Why am I ranting? I already talked to a few of my Japanese friends and they're actually sharing the same sentiment.

@NintendoFan4Lyf To be honest I also mostly played the story. I just think that there is a lot of stuff to enjoy for people who like sandboxes, even if there are no post launch updates.
Well they have always preferred portability and to support their own country and Sony its looking more western than Japanese in this days just look how they don't even care about the Xbone
@Knuckles-Fajita Mine is not small and I am not Japanese so no.
@maruse also sonys crusade on censorship on their 3rd party games is also playing a role as well.
With all of the titles that we do know are coming this year, I expect those numbers to keep shooting up! Heck, I'm excited to learn what announcements will roll around next week that'll surely help the Switch's case.
How many copies will Pokemon Sword and Shield sell at launch, combined? 2m on day one? More? It’s going to blow everything else out of the water.
...where is xbone on that list? Come on, you can tell us....
Like once per month at least there’s one of these articles about japan on nintendolife. Rarely come across North America sales for switch articles on this site
@Mgene15 The reason you don't see NL talk about NA sales as much as JPN sales is because A. The Famitsu charts come out every week vs. NPD's charts come out monthly and B. Because the NPD charts don't have sales numbers
But, they still do report monthly on NPD sales data, here's their most recent article: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/05/switch_was_the_best-selling_console_in_april_in_the_us_mortal_kombat_11_tops_software_charts
Guys you have to understand, the Switch is a joke, Japan is a myth and doesn't exist. The Xbone is the only console worth talking about and it is time for this site to admit that and declare their undying loyalty to Microsoft.
Japan! Please, grow up! Next you will tell me you still believe the moon landing happened!
Not surprise
Yeah but it doesn’t count, or something something some other way to play down the Switch doing well
@Tantani I noticed that my self. Maybe once thry announce some heavy hitters like Animal Crossing and maybe surprise us with Pikmin 4, the number will go right back up again.
