Nintendo has announced the three games coming to the Nintendo Switch Online NES service in the month of June. Both North America and Europe will receive Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Volleyball and City Connection. These games will be released on the service on 12th June.
Below are the full details about each title, courtesy of the official PR:
Double Dragon II: The Revenge – Billy and Jimmy Lee, the Double Dragons, are back to avenge the loss of Marian. In their quest to defeat the evil Shadow Warriors, Billy and Jimmy must complete nine missions, facing deadly street gangs, ninjas and huge mutant fighters. Can Billy and Jimmy contend with the enemies placed before them and ultimately save the world?
Volleyball – Enjoy a game of volleyball as you spike for a point, slam a perfect serve and make a save that wins the game for your team. As captain, you’ll lead your team through a fast-paced warm-up round, and then quickly move into the heat of real volleyball competition. The first team to 15 points wins the set, and the first team to win three sets takes the match.
City Connection – After breaking into an exclusive paint store in New York City, you’re on the run from the cops! Carrying leaky 10-gallon cans of paint, drive over every mile of New York City highways before catching a boat to England. From there, you will go on a tour of the world, avoiding the police and leaking paint everywhere you go.
If you're wondering what Japan will receive this month, it's the exact same line-up. Here's the Japanese trailer:

I think they’re running out of games...
🤑
Is this stuff supposed to appeal to anyone?
At least I can say I wasn't expecting this at E3.
Nintendo is the mallet and the NES is the dead horse they're beating with it
If the NES online offerings look bad, just remember Tetris 99 is there to comfort you all.
I wish they would release regular nes Tetris! Other than Mario Kirby Lolo and Zelda, I am just waiting SNES games...
What was that pixel pelvic thrusting that volleyball? Or are they just twerking?
Jesus Christ.
"exclusive" paint shop in NYC? What does that even mean?
Meh, another month I won't give the nes app a look
Come on big N, announce something more substantial at E3 for the service...I know you can...
I have turned on that NES app like 2 or 3 times total. Might once for Double Dragon II... but as a whole, the collection is crap, especially if you own a NES Classic.
Thank goodness Twitch gave me a year's membership for free. Though I still feel slightly ripped off.
They really are scraping the bottom of the barrel now, aren't they?
Maybe SNES games will be an E3 shadow-drop or something...
I repurchased splatoon 2 today after loosing it a few months back.
Unfortunately i checked my play time and saw it had been reset to zero.
In doing so i also noticed my playtime for the nes app was just one hour. I've been a member since the start.
The online service right now is very niche. It lacks mass appeal as there is no diversity.
Just my two cents
Good lord, it’s painful. It’s ok Nintendo, you... you can stop now.
@XCWarrior I appreciate you dislike the service and how it is being operated.
But i fail to understand how you can feel ripped off by a service you got for free that is giving you access to free software.
Give us Earthbound Beginnings already.
A meh line up, but at least Double Dragon 2 is something to play with a friend online so there's that.
But could we maybe see the SNES games announced at E3 Nintendo? A online Super Mario Kart would be a big boost in new subs/resubs......
WHERE ARE THE SNES GAMES 😭😭😭.
Maaaaaan, stop with those NES Titles, apparently you've run through the best of them. So give us SNES games already, we've bene patient!
Guess I’m the only one happy about Volleyball. I swear, most of my NES time has been Dodgeball and Tecmobowl. And I’m okay with that.
Are they really the same offering? Isn’t that Japanese Volleyball the Famicom Disk System version? I swear I can see the wee logo in the corner. Unless, of course, that version was the one released in the West.
Meh it's another bunch of NES games that I probably play hundreds of times already. Next!
I am really really hoping at E3 they announce SNES, and Game Boy/Color games. I really would love to see N64 and GBA too, but that might be asking too much.
SNES games probably won't come until September, close to the one year renewal.
Got an actual NES last week. Only half of my games fit, the rest are just a smidge too long and dont go all the way down. Anyone help?
@Heavyarms55 It's highly likely they will be announcing the SNES games at E3 given that the complete list of launch games was datamined months ago, and it seemed close to being finished at the time. I wouldn't hold my breath for Gameboy games though. There are 2 other unknown emulators in the files besides the NES and SNES emulators, and my bets are those will be the N64 and GBA emulators.
Double Dragon is fine adition.
And City connection is a guilty pleasure of mine.
This update is fine for me.
@patbacknitro18 Seems like Game Boy and N64 would be more likely than GBA and N64. Though potentially a GBA emulator could do both GBA and Game Boy. Some fan made emulators do that.
Was that datamine legit? I heard about it but I thought people were skeptical about it?
Double Dragon II is one of my favorite NES games. I'm rather excited to play it again
Glad for Double Dragon II. The other two look meh.
Hopefully we get Star Tropics II and Earthbound Beginnings before they stop adding NES in favor of SNES in september.
@DK-Fan why do you consider it a guilty pleasure? It’s a seriously fun game.
@Heavyarms55 The datamine was legit, as it was done by group who had datamined previous Switch games for information and they were always legit. That being said, GBA seems more likely at this point as both the Wii and WiiU virtual consoles prioritized GBA over Gameboy. (Unsure why the 3DS didn't have GBA games in it's virtual console, especially since people who got the 3DS early apparently got some GBA games for the system, but beyond that none were sold. Even the New Nintendo 3DS didn't have an option to buy any, despite a bunch of SNES games being released for it) But ya it seems more likely that they would put GBA games over Gameboy.
@Illusion I highly doubt they are going to stop updating the NES library for Switch for a while. I mean they want to give people as many reasons as possible to join the online service. So wouldn't it make sense to update both the NES and SNES apps with games every month, rather than just stop supporting 1 app and favoring another?
Double Dragon 2 is the best out of this bunch. Nintendo farted again...this all feels like a prank and it smells...🤢
@patbacknitro18 From what I read about the GBA games on 3DS, they were done in a different way than other VC titles and Nintendo wasn't happy with the method and decided not to do more.
I certainly would not complain about GBA titles! While I would love to get the original Shantae, Pokemon gen 1 and 2, the Trading Card Game, etc, There are a ton of GBA games I would jump on as as well! Both GBA Fire Emblem titles, Both Advance Wars, Final Fantasy Tactics, Harvest Moon, Golden Sun...
I just really want more than NES titles on the Switch for retro Nintendo. My Nintendo Nostalgia largely begins with Game Boy, GBA and N64. I like NES and SNES, but I went back to them, I didn't grow up with them. My father had NES, my cousins had SNES, I had Game Boy.
I have a vague recollection of a friend having City Connection and it being fun.
We need real Virtual Console titles across multiple generations. Sticking with NES games is a weak offering for a paid service, but I know staunch fanboys will defend it. Classic, Nintendo getting a pass for being Nintendo.
@Krambo42 I guess because of the silly "plot" and the simple gameplay. But good point, it is actually a very fun game.
@PBandSmelly: Are you sure the carts are official? If they're not, they might be a little too long. In that case, you could try buying shorter empty carts, and placing the boards of the longer carts, into the shorter carts, assuming the circuit boards inside are small enough to adequately fit in the shorter cart housing. Another solution would be to try the longer carts in a top loader Nes (Nes model 2).
@Heavyarms55 I can guarantee you we will be getting the SNES app soon. Not sure about the other 2 datamined emulators, they weren't named. And there is a chance we may not get the SNES app at E3, but it would be a huge missed opportunity if it doesn't launch there. Some people are getting their hopes up that one of the other 2 emulators is a Gamecube emulator, but I find that even more doubtful than the possibility of Gameboy over GBA.
@Capt_N
I checked, they all have the right screws, warning labels, etc. They just are LITERALLY HALF A CENTIMETER AWAY. Even if I get the top loader, I heard it doesnt work very well with newer TV's even with an HDMI converter
@backlogrob Actually a SNES Emulator was datamined on the NES app, alongside a list of SNES games. I can't remember the full list, but it was about on par with the quality of the NES starting lineup. List was mostly common games like Super Mario World Link to the Past, Starfox. It had some odd games in it as well that you wouldn't expect. As well as Starfox 2 was on the list. The datamine was a few months back, and it seemed like it was close to being ready for launch condition. Chances are it will be launched at E3.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah honestly other than Animal Crossing footage, I’d be most excited to hear a new system get announced for online at E3. The NES is great and my introduction to video games, but even I struggle squeezing the fun out of some of these games. They are really stumbling out the gate with this service , but Nintendo have made some better moves in this generation... so hopefully they do something. What will likely happen is they won’t announce any of their classic content, but give us something new in the Tetris 99 vein at E3.
@duffmmann just play Earthbound Beginnings on a Wii U like everyone else
@NotTelevision Well Tetris 99 was a home run in my opinion. I've played nearly 35 hours of it and love it! And Animal Crossing is my #1 want at E3. I want a full trailer and a release date. Or at the least a release month!
But SNES and other retro games aren't far behind on my wish list.
@patbacknitro18 unfortunately they're running out of good and playable NES games. I'm sure they'll keep what they have, but after another 12 games for June to September, the quality NES titles will be tapped out. Very few subscribers to the online service have an interest in playing every NES title for completion's sake. How many of your friends have the patience for 80% of the NES titles originally released?
@patbacknitro18 Why can you guarantee it? Do you know something the rest of us don't about it? I mean, it does make sense that we'd get it sooner than later but, Nintendo often doesn't make sense...
Though I totally agree with you that a Gamecube emulator seems really unlikely. Not before the others.
E3 is the perfect time to reveal Snes games, especially with mario maker 2 and animal crossing having online play, I hope they have plans for this!
@NintonicGamer I love those suggestions! That would make this guy very happy!
Nintendo's trying too hard, we need Cheetahman to come to NSO.
@PBandSmelly First, blow on the cartridge. Then push the cartridge in as much as it will go and move the cartridge back and forth rapidly while pushing the power button over and over until the screen comes on.
After 5 minutes of that, give up, grab a magnifying glass and go burn some ants. If hairspray and a lighter is handy, it can make a pretty good impromptu flamethrower.
I'm actually happy with the NES library on the switch. I would rather play the games on the Switch then on my NES Classic..... But this is definitely the worst 3 realised yet! Volleyball is one of the worst games on the NES in my opinion.
Nintendo should realise that we customers are not satisfied with games they give us! ...City Connection, Volleyball, geez i am insulted!
I have fond memories of playing Double Dragon 2 with my cousins, so I will give that one a go.
As a side note...I wish they would have went with Super Spike V'Ball instead of what they chose for Volleyball...
Volleyball.....yay......that's a game......cool 🤮
double dragon 2 second stage;
Easy lover
She'll get a hold on you believe it
Like no other
Before you know it you'll be on your knees
She's an easy lover
She'll take your heart but you won't feel it
She's like no other
And I'm just trying to make you seeeeeee.
By Phil and Phil
@millarrp that was the one with billy and jimmy right?
It seems like most gamers these days prefer 16-bit gaming over 8-bit. Nintendo should have taken note.
Everyone saying they scrapping the bottom but are all classics on the app?
@tc-senzei yes.
I'm not sure I'll be renewing it next time. I barely play Kirby lately...
@Heavyarms55 @patbacknitro18 The DS can play GBA games and the 3DS is backwards compatible so I'm pretty sure the GBA games we got aren't emulated but run natively.
That's why they don't have any of the features of the virtual console games (like save states).
What a weak line up. The NES is boring. We need some SNES but I doubt they will announce anything like that. I would very much like to see GameCube games but that will probably be for the next console. Too bad we didn’t get a N64 mini classic
Woo.
Hoo.
(Snores)
SNES when? Ugh!
Underwhelming to say the least...
Yes. Fantastic news.
Woooohoo
Slow hand clap.
@Illusion Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa yeah we have a handful of games uploaded and they're running out of good ones.
Well finally we get DD2, one of the best games on the system and maybe the best 2 player game. This whole thing is still farcical.
I’ve been enjoying going through the NES games, I like having quick bursts on them as they’re easy to pick up and play and ideal for those lying on the couch and picking the switch up off the coffee table moments. It’s that time of the month again...
We want more. These are ok for once a year
@PBandSmelly those long are probably SNES games
So that's where the volleyball girl from Smash Bros.' spirits came from... Damn plain Western box arts...
Double Dragon II was one of a handful of NES games I had as a kid. So the nostalgia is strong for me on that one
I don't get the hate here. Well i guess i do from people under 30. But this isn't probably aimed at them. Yes not all these games are top tier, but the library now on NES online is pretty good, and almost covers everything the NES Classic edition had, which only a couple of years ago everyone was raving about. Stop whinging about free content. If they gave us the top 50 NES games of all time in the first year, then we'd only be whinging about the crap that comes out when they have ran out of good games. I too want SNES on here now, but i have more than got enjoyment out of playing a lot of NES titles on the go.
give me snes and n64 titles for switch and i'm the happiest little boy on this planet
Getting deja vu for like the second or third time now with sluggish "Virtual Console" release schedules with very dull games.
@duffmmann Earthbound Beginnings is coming to Switch as part of the Mother/Earthbound collection.
Bad month for Switch Online members.
Nintendo still trolling us... classic.... the jokes not old at all
I just don’t get the complaining about the NES games. I haven’t got Online for these games and I can’t imagine anyone bought the membership just to play old NES games.
I also don’t believe that SNES games are going to be part of the Online membership. Maybe if there will be multiple memberships in the future but not like this.
All I really want from this thing is battletoads and double dragons, TMNT turtles in time, Yoshi's island, that Incredible hulk game, final fight 2 last round, Saturday night slam master, and maybe marvel super heroes war of the gems.
All of those are Snes games though and for anybody that doesn't have nostalgia for the nes, the wait for every other Nintendo system will probably last longer than this console's lifespan.
Releasing these NES games so far into the Switch's lifecycle while not releasing any GB, GBC, GBA, SNES, N64, GameCube, DS, 3DS, or Wii games is horrible business. Nintendo fans love Nintendo games. Emulators work great. Why couldn't I play Advance Wars 2 on Switch a year ago?! Why wasn't Yoshi's Island available to play on Switch 6 months after it released?! These are easy things to accomplish and they make your fans/customers happy. Oh well, guess I'll get to enjoy an incredible game of Volleyball here in a few days! It would be so nice to be able to play Advance Wars DS, Metroid Zero Mission, Kirby's Dream Course, Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario 64 (boosted to 60 fps please!) on my Switch!
With these picks, I'm starting to doubt we'd get SNES in September. Maybe it'll be 2020 when NES ends meanwhile locking most of Mario Maker 2 and Animal Crossing behind NSO being the driving factor for NSO subscriptions.
I can't believe that shortly after launch I was eagerly anticipating GameCube games.....so dissapointed
Double Dragon 2 is a great game and one of my favourites I had on cartridge back in 1991. Yikes.
I expect the launch of SNES games to be in September on the Anniversary of the Online service.
@Cyrax77 well I guess I bought the service to continue to play splatoon 2. Except that I gave up on that in about January. On the Wii u I didn't need a subscription to play splatoon and cod. Cod had voice chat by the way. I don't really enjoy these nes games. So personally I feel ripped off.
The NES was my first console and I know a lot of people hold it in high regard, but honestly I find many of its games hard to go back to. 16-bit is about as far back as I can go. I’m not holding my breath but with E3 round the corner it would be a perfect time to announce SNES games coming. I suspect there’ll be quite a jump in Online Membership.
The real problem is that most of us want MM2 which will require online. So as much as we're all complaining we are mostly going to go renew our subscriptions. We as fans love nintendo but nintendo doesn't treat their fans right in my opinion. Rather they give them the bare minimum.
@YorkshireNed If this is a honest question and not merely cynical, than Yes, i'm one of these Guys who are excited for new NES Games, might they be either "Popular" ones or "hidden Gems". Double Dragon 2 already excites me and i'll give the other two a look as well.
Embarrassing...
I haven't played any of these three games. They're new to me. 3 free new-to-me NES games. I have no issues with this selection.
Problem is.. Nintendo loves to re-release these early NES games... even if there not that great/aged that well
they been doing this since the Animal Crossing GC/GBA E-reader days
on the positive side, DD2 is a classic game
I think you mean Bimmy and Jimmy.
Just a shame Nintendo can't get more 3rd party games for the NES app, there's loads of good games that could be released.
@YorkshireNed if it does appeal to anyone. The poor buggers they must havent have got any switch games withtheir console.
Who was asking for City Connection, I wonder?
@SimplyCinnamon53 They're not running out of games, Nintendo is releasing them too slowly.
Even when all 3 of those NES games are good, it's still just 3, they can deliver SNES games faster than that.
@Sidon_ZoraPrince second part is sarcasm and overkill to quantify just how horrible the service.
I have 0 reasons to actually pay for the service when the free term ends. We will see if Mario Maker keeps me hooked long enough to change my mind
Good batch of games. Volleyball is terrible, but DDII is superb, and I’ve always wanted to play NES City Connection. I never wanted to pay $5 for it on VC (even though I would own that digital copy for thousands of years!) so I’m happy to trade some change to rent it.
Has anyone said "by this rate we won't get any N64 games until 2022!!!!!!!" yet? Someone please say it, the monthly NES comment section's not the same without it....
Double Dragon 2 is one of the finest console beat-them-ups to this day. The other 2...meh
Whoa, not a very exciting bunch...
@BlackenedHalo
Most definitley not
only 1/3 are games i'd maybe play, here are lots of better options out there than Volleyball and whatever City connection is that i've never even heard of. All we can do is hope that SNES is dropping at E3 or at least announced as possibly rumored, though I already have SNES classic with most of those games to. At least if we get SNES the games are longer than the bite size nature of NES.
Nintendo dosen't even bother putting a better game of the same genre when they have the option to. Super Spike Volleyball is one of my favorite NES games, and a GREAT volleyball game and they decide to put the cruddy "Volleyball" on instead.
Oh well I guess.
There's no way they're running out of games! Just please gimme Faxanadu. Also Dragon Warrior (any of em), maybe Final Fantasy? Battle of Olympus, Star Tropics 2, Crystalis, Wizards & Warriors, Battletoads, Journey to Silius, Ninja Gaiden 2 or 3? Maniac Mansion, The Guardian Legend, Karnov, Shadowgate, Deja Vu, Uninvited, Rygar? And I'm not even listing Capcom and Konami games since they don't appear to be participating in the thing.
I gave up waiting on Snes games 2 months ago and picked up a Snes mini with 200 games from Ebay. Best decision I ever made
Apparently City Connection is a solid game so I'll be checking that out. Not much excitement though this month.
We need Mother on here....then it’s time to whip out the SNES library!
@nessisonett Volleyball was a disk exclusive in Japan.
Pro Wrestling was also essentially a disk-exclusive, oddly only getting released in Japan on cartridge in a pay-to-play console variation made for hotels called the Famicom Box.
Technically, the Famicom and NES versions of City Connection were somewhat different. The NES version I recall had something of a graphical upgrade, perhaps to hide it was an older game. I remember they actually added a smoking guy to the game, which is odd and NoA probably shouldn't have allowed it by their own rules.
Jaleco also planned to update a very early shooter called Exerion for the US market, but never released it (a prototype ROM with the copyright hacked has been leaked).
@SlyPlayr09 tetris 99, splatoon, mario kart, etc already did that.
@qualx super spike its even a four player game! It would be great!
Aww yiss, Double Dragon 2. IMO the best of the NES Double Dragon trilogy. I can see that game being a blast to play online, especially since lag won't make or break it the way it would games like Mario 3.
I've been a die hard Nintendo fan since 1989 but even I can't defend this. This service simply isn't good enough.
City Connection looks cool.
I'll give them all a go but find myself getting bored of NES games quickly.
@YorkshireNed I love City Connection. I had it on the NES as a kid and later got it on my 3DS.
@nessisonett Yeah one is NES and one is FDS, but it's still the same game.
@Cyrax77 I got Switch Online just for the NES games. I hate playing games online. As a matter of fact, I bought the Switch for retro games and retro styled games. The only games I own are Nintendo Arcade Archives releases (Donkey Kong, Punch Out and all the rest), Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Namco Museum and Sonic Mania.
Can they just remove the white start and select text at the bottom of the emulator! It’s been close to a year and it’s still there!
Double Dragon II: The Revenge is the best DD game on the NES. City Connection is a VERY enjoyable game (however I suggest getting the Arcade Archives version and playing that instead). And I can't really comment on the Volleyball game. This is not a bad month at all in my opinion.
@konbinilife I would love for them to release NES Tetris, but they would need a deal with the Tetris Company for that to happen.
Not impossible, but the odds are probably against it.
@Marioxb
Aight, fair enough. Are you dissapointed in the amount and quality of the NES library?
@RedRaven723 the SNES Mini is fantastic! It is my favourite thing connected to my tv.
Double Dragon is a good one but the other two stink like dying raccoon diarrhea. City Connection I missed in the day and thank the lord I did. Volleyball was a turd then and it looks worse now with its possible #metoo violations.
At this point if SNES titles are not announced at E3 I am done with NES. I play the Genesis collection and the Castlevania collection the most now. I am just waiting on the Contra release.
Nintendo I am deeply disappointed in this repolishing of fecal matter.
@PBandSmelly turn the system on without pushing it down. Pins are probably just tight.
@Cyrax77 I actually like NES more than SNES as well, it was my "first love", I had an Atari 2600, ColecoVision ADAM and Magnavox Odyseey 2, but I never cared much about them. I got rid of them all when I got my NES back in 87. It made me love everything Nintendo (see my username) as well. Cartoons, cereal, toys etc. I love all of the released NES Online games, maybe except the black box sports games. But the black box games are what started the whole thing and, at least to me, are an iconic part of the library. I'd love to see the entire black box set on Switch, which I know is impossible (Popeye, Zapper and ROB games, Rare's Slalom). So I'm only dissapointed in quantity. No reason we can't have 90% of the NES library on there.
@PBandSMELLY: Like Trajan suggested, the pins might be too tight, or bent.
Nintendo really need to stop delivering CPR to this corpse.
@TheLightningYu fair enough. I already have DD2 on the NES mini and it didn't engage me. Maybe I'm out of step with popular opinion but for me DD and DD2 were classic arcade games but their home console and computer versions were all underwhelming. It was a rough and ready 16bit aracade game but those 8 bit ports were more rough than ready! I remember seeing a Game Boy version in the shops and thinking "uhhhhh, no thanks".
Honestly, I'd love it if they would just bring Virtual Console back. I would literally throw my money at Nintendo for it. (Well, okay, maybe not literally but hopefully you get my point.)
