Devolver Digital and developer Doinksoft have revealed that Gato Roboto will be launching on Nintendo Switch next week. If you've ever thought Metroid needed more cats, this is absolutely the game for you.
The game places you inside a cosy, armoured mech suit before setting you off on a dangerous trek through an alien underworld. Your mission is to save your stranded captain and his crashed spaceship, but plenty of irritable creatures and treacherous obstacles stand in your way.
You can get a good sense of the Metroidvania-style action in the trailer above, and learn more about how it all works with this feature list below.
FEATURES
- Explore the underground labyrinth of a deep space outpost and uncover the dastardly deeds that unfolded before your arrival.
- Blast and dash your way through enemies and obstacles in an agile mech suit to face the guardians stationed precariously throughout the base.
- Cautiously venture outside the mech and risk all nine lives to explore areas inaccessible to your bulky, mechanical armour.
- Discover secrets abound and gather new weapons and items to help open up new areas on your journey through dozens of handcrafted environments.
You can download this one directly from the Nintendo Switch eShop for $7.99 / £5.79 / €6.59. It launches on 30th May, but pre-orders go live today with a 15% discount available.
A purrfect take on the genre, or not up to scratch for your tastes? As ever, make sure to give us a meowthful in the comments.

This seems really promising. I like the artstyle too, reminds me of Minit (and Metroid II, of course).
Ugh, the mech suits ruin it for me. SO close to having a great platformer in this one! The lack of colour hurts my eyes too.
Wait, wasn't this in Warioware?
... That looks VERY tempting...
ill stick to warioware's meowtroid for my cat metroidvania game thank you very much
From what I've seen I like a lot! I like the minimal black and white pixel art.
This style of pixel art in particular is 1-bit.
I didn't have too much fun with Minit but this genuinely looks good.
I keep on asking them on twitter if there will be a physical but they just ignore me
getting this today
Looks neat. And for some reason I have Styx playing in my head now.
Been looking forward to this one in particular.
@Bunkerneath
Given it's Devolver Digital, there's a likelihood it'll get a physical release via Special Reserve Games.
The Messenger, Minit, Downwell, GRIS, and Enter the Gungeon are all Devolver Digital published games.
You might be able to look forward to Pikuniku, Ape Out, Katana Zero, and My Friend Padro too.
YESSSS!
Been looking forward to this since the reveal!
Not the biggest fan of the Meowtroid series from WarioWare, so not sure about this one
Well this looks like a treat!
Had never heard of this until just now, and it’s out soon! Love it when that happens. Will get.
I hope the cheap price isn’t reflective of how long the game is though...
I've been looking forward to this one. I will definitely being getting it next week.
This actually looks fun...great use of black and white too.
This looks like such a cool game, very unique sound design.
@ThatNyteDaez The mech suits "ruin" it for you? How so?
Yep, this is still Super Mewtroid to me.
£5.79??? It's normally £7.19 but with its 15% discount it's in £6.11 ... Where you get the pricing from???
I'll probably get this!
Looks cool, but I can't figure something out... are these the same guys that made Minit?
This looks awesome! Gonna get!
I hope the cheap price is reflective of how long the game is... as I don’t have much time to sink into another game —-backloggggggg
Still waiting on an official "Mewtroid" release after being teased in WarioWare Twisted. That would be decent
@ThatNyteDaez k
@Bunkerneath just get it digitally, then. They probably need support before they can justify doing a physical copy. You can pay more money for it later, not like you wouldn't be paying extra for the physical copy in the first place anyway.
@ThatNyteDaez How is it so close to being a "great platformer" if you hate everything that makes it what it is?
Could buy this only to play as cat.
I'll probably wait to get this when I use one game vouchers on Mario Maker 2 and then the other on this.
Anything that smells a bit like classic metroid is worth a look.
This is on my top 3 anticipated games and it’s finally coming out! When was this announced during last years E3? A direct sometime before? I forget but ever since I’ve been dying to play it. Already preordered!
@Bunkerneath putting a $8 game to fill up only 400MB of a Switch cart kinda sounds like a waste. A limited run might happen someday, who knows, but I wouldn’t expect an official release.
Uh I hope there's color dlc or something.
I really do wish this was in color. It does look like a lot of fun, but the black and white aesthetic is killing me. I’m confused!
Looks very cool!
