Yesterday saw the release of Ding Dong XL, a one-button arcade game that aims to really test your reflexes - and yes, it has a rather humorous name, too.
Regardless of whatever you were thinking, the name actually comes from the fact that you 'ding' and 'dong' between the top and bottom of the screen, hoping to avoid obstacles, collect points, and smash helpful power-ups along the way. It's said to have a 'just-one-more-round' kind of feel, which is hardly ever a bad thing.
Coinciding with its release yesterday, the game's creator, Adam Nickerson, has shared a lengthy Twitter thread which explained how the game came into being. As we imagine is the case for many of you reading this, Nickerson's life has been almost directed by a passion for and childhood full of Nintendo. From getting a NES at the age of five or six, to having his own game on a Nintendo console, it's been quite a ride.
The thread is a little long for us to share in its entirety here, so we've picked out a couple of highlight moments below.
If you're interested in checking the game out for yourself, you can actually go ahead and pick it up for just $0.99 / £0.89.

I'd buy it, but I already have a XL Ding Dong.
Oooohhh, Ding Dong XL... that’s going straight in my basket
The expansion pak is required for full immersion.
Love it on mobile. Bought it on switch to support the guy. Doesn't seem to be leaderboards on this version yet. Hopefully that gets added later.
The phrase ding dong always reminds of Thatcher's death. Ah, good ol' days.
No idea what this game is about and the trailer didn't help
@Abes3 JRPG
Tempted to get it because of the name. After buying all the DLC costumes, I still have a dollar left.
Hah. Only took until the second comment for someone to make the obvious joke!
Anyway, it looks a bit basic, and the name turns me off, but I'm always happy for people who manage to actually... y'know, do stuff. Making a game (a real game, at least, as opposed to an asset flip) is huge.
Man game names are getting creative
@NTELLIGENTMAN amazings!
For anyone that doesn't have a Ding Dong XL should get this. It has tons of gameplay. If you get tired, you can always play for a few hours the next day. Had mine since early teens.
@nessisonett
Going straight into your basket? Is basket a euphemism for something?
I have enough Gold Points to get this for free! Yay!
It's fantastic that NintendoLife covered this heartwarming story but it's a shame they haven't reviewed the game. It's a lot of fun to play and really defies the expectations of an 89p game. A good score and kind words could do wonders for sales. I think the developer deserves it.
@Abes3 It's less than $1... just get it and you will see.
This game works really well on Switch... it has a "Dual" mode which functions as two-player co-op if you each hold a JoyCon... awesome tabletop fun!
Also, first time I have ever used the Switch kickstand...
@holygeez03 done, played the crap out of it. Love it
@Abes3
Glad it worked out!
