Independent developer Gabe Cuzzillo and game label Devolver Digital have announced Ape Out, a brand new game headed to Switch early next year.
This one is described as "a wildly intense and colourfully stylised smash ‘em up about primal escape, rhythmic violence, and frenetic jazz", and we certainly get that vibe from the trailer. Players can build up nearly unstoppable momentum and use their captors as both weapons and shields, crushing everyone on their procedurally generated path to freedom.
The game's entire identity is a particularly striking assault on the senses, with the visuals and soundtrack both grabbing our attention in equal measure; we'd urge you to watch the trailer above if you haven't already. Devolver Digital - under the name of its pretend "CFO" Fork Parker - has said the following in a new press release:
“Our team is pleased to finally announce a release date for one of our most anticipated titles ever in Ape Out. Frankly, it was a lot harder to motion capture an ape than we had originally thought and recording primates ripping human corpses apart is generally frowned upon in most countries.”
The game will slam, smash, and sucker-punch its way to Switch on 7th February 2019. Make sure to let us know what you think about this one in the comments.

Well... Okay then. Not much to say on this.
All I have to say is: PLEASE BRING SERIOUS SAM TO SWITCH!
I think that trailer gave me an anxiety attack.
Not much into the style of it.
"Chimp out" is commonly used by racists so the name being close is a little troubling...
Wow, if I had a hangover watching that video would hurt.
This looks and sounds incredible to me. I will Ape Out day one.
All I kept thinking was "why don't they just shoot him?"
This game looks stupid and boring.
C'mon Devolver, you guys can do better than this.
My head hurts.
Mr. Shifty, you got really hairy all of a sudden.
Good lord, nope. Good on Devolver for taking a chance... but they shouldn’t have.
Awesome! I'm in
Looks pretty similar to Hotline Miami.
Based on Harambe meme?
Looks odd but fun... mechanic might get old if it doesn't change in different levels.
Count me in. Looks hilarious
This is awesome!
Also, love Devolver and its tongue-in-cheek style.
Bennett Foddy, the same guy that made Getting Over It and QWOP, is doing art for a real game. The final product will be interesting, at the very least.
@boatie Let's leave that kind of cuck thinking at resetera.
I love the dynamic use of sound here. It reminds me of Birdman, and the visual style apes (geddit?) that of Monaco, an older indie stealth game.
At first, the procedural generated levels turned me off, but it might actually make sense this time with the jazz inspired soundtrack. Could be very interesting!
Trailer looks interesting but I didn't see enough gameplay variety to warrant a purchase. It's one thing when you're showing this in a minute demo but I don't see how this game would keep me entertained for hours...I'd have to see more.
Huh, looks a lot like Teleglitch.
They really love Hotline Miami too much eh?
@boatie
I just made the mistake of googling that phrase.
Well, at least they can't have "ape out". It's already a thing, and it's equal opportunity.
@Tirza i made an account just to say: how is this boring? people being smashed to bits and guns going off is boring? okie dokie. i understand you not liking the game, just next time maybe describe how you feel better or something idk
@eggron You must be american.
