In sad but inevitable news, Nintendo's popular squid-kid Switch shooter Splatoon 2 will be receiving its final content update next month on 5th December.
Version 4.3.0 adds a total of eight new weapons. Four of these have already been revealed and include the Ballpoint Splating Nouveau, Nautilus 79, Custom Explosher and the Bloblobber Deco. Take a look below:
As for the abilities, Bomb Defense Up and Cold Blooded have been combined to create a new ability known as Defense Up DX. The next ability being added is the Main Power Up, which will enhance weapons in different ways (see below).
After this update is released, that’s it for Splatoon 2. No more brand new content will be added to the game. At most, you expect new Splatfest, balance tweaks and adjustments to maps for another year.
Are you looking forward to Splatoon 2's final content update? Let us know in the comments.

It had a great run, but all good things must come to an end. At least Smash comes out two days after, so we won’t miss new Splatoon content as much.
Fantastic run, not upset in the least.
Sad news... Very sad news. But Splatoon 2 is one heck of a game! I really was hoping they'd bring back some more of the maps from the first game in updates before they stopped. But I guess they need to move on.
I do hope we see a Splatoon 3 in a few years. There is so much more they can do with this series.
I'd love to see 8 player teams on larger maps. 8 player Salmon run. The Octo Expansion showed just how much more potential Splatoon has for single player content with platforming, physics puzzles, and other level types.
I just pray Main Power Up won't throw the balance out of whack.
I'm very interested to know what Main Power Up will do for chargers, my main category of weapon. ("Shots are now hitscan!" Yeah, even I realize that isn't going to happen. lol )
End of an era, as they say. Didn't most or all of the team that worked on the Splatoon series also do Animal Crossing? Maybe they're working on the Switch version more intensely next? 8D
ON EDIT: Oh, and seriously? Main Power Up on the Splat Roller increases damage? Like...it wasn't doing enough damage to begin with? lol
Good night, sweet Inkling Prince!
So what does this mean they are coming out with Splatoon 3 now?
Still wondering about the new sub weapons and specials added.
IMO I feel they need to spread them out to more weapons.
So when Nintendo said the online subscription's profits will be used to support games with additional content that was just words?
Can’t wait for Splatoon 3!
Can't complain with a year and a half of free content and the awesome DLC we got. Now get to finishing Animal Crossing and eventually Splatoon 3!
IMO this game was feature complete at launch. All the content they added was just so much more icing on an already awesome game. Here’s to 450 more hours of Splatoon 2!
Can we get more paid DLC? I'll gladly pay for more DLC like the Octo expansion.
Splatoon 3 confirmed for 2020
um shoot i just bought it. hope people keep playing.
Great game. Great content. Splatoon snuck up on me, and i haven't stopped playing it.
I still wish I got the game prior to the Online paywall.
@bluesdance I wouldn't be worried, people will still be playing the game, especially with Christmas around the corner and many more splatfests on the horizon, the game still has a lot of life yet.
I'd be up for premium, paid content. Here's hoping for several more Splatfests. May the inevitable future Splatoon 3 be Fresh.
Don't get hooked, stay Off The Hook!
Wait, so the construction zone at the back of the plaza is going to stay an unfinished construction zone? I thought for sure they did that as a hint of an expansion.
That's fine just keep the splatfests rolling I'm still
Why are people acting like you can't play the game after no more updates?
Goldeneye recieved no updates, and me and my buddies still play it.
@ItsOKToBeOK @wiggleronacid @justin233 @Tasuki @Heavyarms55 There's not going to be a Splatoon 3 on Switch. Either they make a pointless sequel that has no difference from 2 and split the player base, or they make a game so different it isn't Splatoon.
And why would you want a 3 so badly? If you just like spending money, just give Nintendo $60.
Reminds me of people asking about the next Nintendo in June of 2017... Consumers going to consume.
@Trajan I own Splatoon on Wii U is Splatoon 2 on Switch really that much different to be worth dropping $60 on it?
Splatoon 2 is a phenomenal game and it’s had an insane content rollout. I definitely got way more than my money’s worth out of it so far, and I’m definitely not stopping anytime soon.
@mowerdude It’s similar, but way better.
Hopefully Splatoon 3 is in the works! I’d love to see a more fleshed out Salmon Run Mode with more maps, bosses and player progression.
@mowerdude I never played it. Wish I could give you a straight answer. I think 2 has more maps, and clam blitz which is actually pretty fun now that people know how to play it.
The danger with your question is people can be fanboys and say one way or another.
I will say this: you can get the game for $40-50. It is worth it to me. It's the best online shooter I have played. Number 2 goes to gungame in CSS. Which I'd love for a mode like that to be implemented in Splatoon. But then the goal would be kills so idk if Nintendo would do that.
Predicting Splatoon 3 in Summer 2020. There are so many quality of life improvements that should still be made in S2, but will probably need to wait until S3. Make it easier to play Turf Wars with friends without having to wait for a slot to open up. Do it like Salmon Run where friends join up and then hit a button to recruit randos to fill the lobby. Speaking of Salmon Run, leave it open all the time. Have more than 2 battle stages per rotation. Have more than 1 ranked mode per rotation. Let us set Off The Hook to autoplay or give an option to speed it up. Have a bot step in when a team has a DC. Ok I'll stop now.
Series had a good run its time too move on
The end of an era... This is sad but also a shining example of games as a service done right.
Are we 100% sure that this will be the last new content? I thought that they hinted that they were working on more stuff during the UK Championships?
I think the game is brilliant but I've still barely scratched the surface. I haven't even finished the single player mode. Life just keeps getting in the way.
People this will NOT end the game. Mario kart 8 isnt getting any updates and people still play that.
@Trajan I don't know about others, but I said in a few years. We could easily see a Switch 2 or something like that in 2-4 years. Or even just a revised Switch. We live in an era where technology is rapidly improving, and people are already predicting a revised Switch being announced as early as next year. In 2-4 years Splatoon 2 will have gotten fairly stale. A Splatoon 3 with new game modes, maps, weapons, a new single player campaign would be perfectly reasonable on Switch. If YOU don't want it, don't buy it. But I am sure people would be clamoring for another entry by then.
I got the game on release date and have only played it once. I can't play until I've finished BotW and Odyssey! Don't get a chance to play that much so still going after buying those on release date too.
If Main Power Up increases the charge speed of the Hydra Splatling I'll be all over that weapon like a bee to honey!!!
Just please don't make Main Power Up increase the charging speed of the chargers... we don't need to revisit the sniper rifle hell that was Splatoon 1 v.v
Edit: like the upgrade of combining Cold Blooded and Bomb Defense Up into one as Bomb Defense Up is already quite useful in turning certain attacks from 2HKO's into 3HKO's like the explosions from Tenta Missiles and the Inkjet, and now it gets better.
Well, it had a good Gogh.
@Heavyarms55 Yes in a couple of years of it does in fact have new modes and maps. But as I said, it won't be on this system. Don't forget Nintendo considers this an evergreen title.
The new model is just a budget version.
Wasn't this the final WEAPON update? We can still get
-clothing
-customization
-abilities
-Salmon Run maps
Additionally, when Splatoon received its "last" weapon, Sheldon's Picks were soon released later.
Ooooohhhh shiny new stuff!
Adding cold blooded into another ability seems like a really good idea, since next to nobody played it. Not so sure about that main power up, but then again I trust Nintendo. I'm curious if cold blooded ability chunks get transformed into main power up chunks or if you lose either the bomb def up or cold blooded chunks... hm.
My favourite game on the switch - here's to 2.500 more hours.
@kuromantic Simply those game monetize their updates (DLC, microtransactions, etc). Nintendo doesn't, so they would need additional money to support adding new content (content needs to be created, and this costs time (= money)).
For bigger games without monetisation a year of new content is actually really normal. Most companies wouldn't even do that.
If Nintendo knew how to do online then every game would be a Microtransaction fest like EA, Activision, Ubisoft games.
Great game! Such a fun concept!
I hoped for more addons for money... but eh...
@Yhdekskymmenen They said that content updates will end at the end of they year. I think this will be the last major thing.
So when it ends how do you collect certain things? Lol
Very sad indeed, but so long as the fanbase remains strong and dedicated to the game, Splatoon 2 will never die.
You know, until 3 comes out.
Does splatoon still lock 90% of its content behind a rotation system?
Splatoon is just amazing. At times, infuriating, but mostly fun haha. I will not stop playing it. Loved the first one. This one is equally amazing. I really hope we get a Splatoon 3 😄
@TheFox I know right, I've always wanted them to do a big expansion to the plaza. That would have been a great final update
@kuromantic Yeah, that's because they need to keep players playing to buy microtransactions, Nintendo doesn't make us do that thankfully.
After splatfests they'll be a limited amount of super sea snails right?
This game reached perfection long ago, those updates are just extras. I'm not even upset they're done.
Let's wait for the third installment to be announced in the years to come.
Considering we pay for Nintendo's online now, it's pretty crap of them to stop providing updates for their big online game after less than 2 years. Online games that want to be relevant don't do that. Overwatch has provided new content for well over 2 years now, cost less at launch on PC, and Blizzard doesn't charge a monthly fee for it either...
So I guess that Rocket mode that people datamined within the game is never gonna be fully realized (At least for Splatoon 2 anyway). That's a bummer, it seemed like it could have been really interesting.
@bluesdance people are still playing the first one with no prob i just logged on it to play some og splatoon, i know 4 people who bought the game this week alone, so i do think they should have supported it till splatoon 3 comes out, and why cant we have voice chat with randoms like mario kart?
@sanderev i in all honesty would pay another 20 for a expansion pass for a year of more updates hell i would have preferred a splatoon 3 coming in 2019 instead of the octo expansion, i bought it played it for like 10 mins and havent been back it didnt add anything to the online experience and to me thats what splatoon has been about.
I can safely say this is my most played Switch game, and it's been well worth the price of admission between free content and the Octo Expansion. I can't wait for the final Splatfest and whenever they announce Splatoon 3. It should go without saying I can't wait for the actual release of Splatoon 3, but baby steps, I guess.
@mowerdude I still play Splatoon on the Wii U also, the hands down honest truth is Splatoon 2 is a way more polished, complete Splatoon experience. It is a steal at $60 imo.
Keep in mind, the whole reason games like Splatoon exist is because of the gaming community that support it. Nintendo will continue to keep the lights on if people are playing.
@Trajan I don't recall saying I wanted Splatoon 3 on Switch, specifically. 🤔
And what's wrong with wanting a new game in a franchise, especially a year and a half after the previous entrie's release? I want to see what they can do with the franchise outside small updates: new game engine, better graphics, new mechanics, ect.
I swear you can't comment on this site without someone replying negatively.
Ive recently been playing Splatoon 2 a lot more. I'm up for paid content because the game is great but I get all things come to an end for numerous reasons. Either way potential content or not ill still play it.
@Trajan
Server closed somedays
People here acting like you can't play the game anymore because there'll be no more updates... It's not dead... People will still play the hell out of it. Updates are irrelevant to its core evergreen appeal. There's already more than enough maps. What more do you want? If you're a true fan of the game then that should mean absolutely nothing to your enjoyment of it. It wouldn't have mattered to me if the game had never received any updates.
Thanks @Trajan for talking sense at least.
@SenseiDje The server for Splatoon could be a single computer with a decent internet connection since it is P2P. Its just like torrents if you've ever used them. Or limewire if you're older.
In fact Splatoon can be playable in 20 years probably. Modded switch that will connect to a different service.
@Trajan The server does handle stuff like matchmaking, splatfests, etc.
@SenseiDje Even the servers of Splatoon (1) are still active. So I do think we'll be playing Splatoon 3 LONG before the servers of 2 are taken offline.
@Almighty-Koz The Octo expansion has always been marketed as Single Player content. That's why it's paid DLC. Also it does add one thing to the Multiplayer aspect. Playable Octolings. And you should really play it some more, the story is really good.
Also I don't like season passes.
Funny thing is I thought they would never stop releasing updates for this game.
Such great support hope smash gets twice as long & as many or more sales
@sanderev @Trajan
thanks for pointing this out... even in p2p, when nintendo says "no more" ... It will be an huge pain... since it's mandatory to be online... even in solo mode.
Goldeneye, multi local, in 20 years, no problem...
@SenseiDje You can play multiplayer offline. You just need multiple Switches with a copy of the game
@bluesdance I doubt folks will just stop playing, well Atleast not immediately. I'm sure you'll get another year or two of support for the game servers. Isn't it Nintendo's best new IP?
@Hikingguy
But equally you could say; If the game is still popular and people are still buying and playing, why keep updating?
People aren't still buying or playing Splatoon 2 because of updates, it's because it's a great game (just as people are still buying and playing MK8DX despite no significant updates ever). The fact that it won't be receiving any more updates doesn't mean everyone's going to suddenly stop playing it. That it suddenly becomes an unfun game. Plus, it can't just keep bloating forever. There has to be a cut-off point.
All I want is a:
Goku vs Vegeta splatfest and
Messi vs Ronaldo splatfest
I would have played it...if it wasn't rampant with cheating that Nintendo did nothing about.
@hirokun Spoken like someone who truly missed out on a wonderful gaming experience (if you're at least halfway interested in the genre). I'm not even sure I encountered a single cheater in over 2.000 hours of Splatoon 2 online. I hope it stays this way. :>
@Heavyarms55 Same, Splatoon 2 is a system seller in my book and hopefully this isn't the end of the franchise. The big and final update should also include... Nintendo Switch Online save support.
@NintyNate Just like the original on Wii U is still going you can still collect in game items, just there will be no new content.
@Haywired To that point there are still a lot of people playing Splatoon on Wii U to this day.
@Fazermint ...yes I suppose if you want to call it that. In reality its just a better way to keep player rotations happening quickly. With Splatoon 2 if you are playing local matches you are able to choose any stage at any time.
@bluesdance People are still playing the first Splatoon so no worries. I intend to keep playing until a new one is released whether on Switch or a new console years down the road.
I've got a few friends in the 'splatubing' scene as I call it. Its not my favorite game by any means, but I don't regret all 70+ hourse I have sunk into it throughout it's run. Maybe for once I'll attend another splatfest, even if it is the finale.
Honestly, I'm more than satisfied, it's been almost 18 months since this game was released and the support they've given it is amazing.
All this does it make me excited for what Splatoon 3 will bring.
The game didn't really need more content...maybe new maps, but we can deal with it. But I just hope they continue Splatfest for some time to come. That's what keeps me returning periodically and I fear without them I never would. That would hurt the "evergreen" sales I think.
This was the game that kept on giving, sad to see it end, but things have changed dramatically since the release (in a good way). Such a great game.
@OctoVeemo20
Oh hello Octoink. Is this your new account? No wonder we haven't heard from you. Did your old account get banned?
@OctoVeemo20
Sorry for your loss, but that's no excuse to continue insulting the producer of Splatoon 2 and possibly Nintendo for crying about not getting the things you want.
