Out of the blue, the appropriately-named developer Giant Squid, in partnership with independent publisher 505 Games, have announced the 2016 title ABZÛ will make a splash on Switch on 29th November for $19.99.
Several members of the development team previously worked on the highly-praised 2012 PlayStation exclusive Journey. This includes the director Matt Nava (also the artistic mind behind Flower) and two-time BAFTA-winning composer Austin Wintory, previously known for his work on The Banner Saga series.
ABZÛ is described as a meditative oceanic adventure that immerses players in a vibrant underwater world filled with mystery and plenty of aquatic life. You take control of a diver - with your mission to change the world around you for the better. Below is the full description:
Playing as the Diver, you'll discover hundreds of unique species based on real creatures and form a powerful connection with the abundant sea life. But this underwater world can be dangerous, broken and toxic - and your mission is to unlock the mysteries of the deep and change the world around you for the better.
ABZÛ is told in the form of mythology and folklore, while capturing the dream-like feeling of underwater exploration. The name is derived from ancient Sumerian language; AB, meaning water, and ZÛ, meaning to know: ABZÛ is the ocean of wisdom.
Tell us if you'll be diving into this underwater adventure when it is released at the end of this month.

I got this free from PS plus many many months ago. I did finish it, but I didn’t think it was particularly special at all. Definitely not worth the $20 they’re charging. Wait for a sale
Have it on steam. Its nothing short of "OK", it did get the scenic thing down pat like journey did but....
its not even two hours long.
I played it when it first came out on PS4, it’s an absolutely beautiful game. I highly recommend playing it if anyone hasn’t yet, it’s short but really lets the player appreciate the world and its deeper meanings.
Another game to scratch off my Steam wishlist and add to my Switch wishlist.
This is definitely a game to play while drinkin a beer.
Then spit it out because its gross
I liked Abzù so much on ps4 when I finished it at 100% two years ago. It's a contemplation game with awesome scenery. Very similar to Journey. I recommend this game. I like everything related to the ocean and the whales in the game was beautiful. I was lucky to see some Lanturn my favorite Pokemon deep down at the bottom of the ocean. Ahhh good moments.
@0muros
Btw, is Abzu like Endless Ocean Wii ?
Unpopular opinion, I absolutely hated Journey and I got it for free. I hope this isn't more of the same.
I saw a Youtuber play this on the PS4 a while back. I thought it looked pretty interesting. I may have to give it a go.
This game rules!
I own the physical edition for PS4. Cool little addition to my collection. I definitely think Journey is better, but I really enjoyed the 3+ hours I spent with Abzu.
I only know about this game because of videogamedunkey
@Anti-Matter I didn't get the chance to play the game you mention but just check some gameplay on YouTube and you gonna have the answer. I got you a link https://youtu.be/VbPTcPA8sbc
Got it with PS+, earlier this year I think. Started it up when my son's got home from school, finished it in time to start dinner, it really is only 2 hours long. It's a heck of a ride, and I'm glad to have played it, it was worth the $4 rental fee for that month of PS+, but I've never even thought about going back to it.
I'll also say this, I don't see how this could be worth it in handheld mode. I'd say only consider it on a big screen tv, it's beautiful and very immersive.
And for anyone else wondering, this isn't Endless Ocean, it's weirder.
@0muros - This looks outstanding. Is there any free roaming to extend the gameplay, or a post game for exploration? I guess my question is, can I make this game as long as I want to make it by swimming around and exploring?
@rjejr
Meh meh.
VR or bust for this one, and you know I'm mostly indifferent to VR nowadays. Still, this one isn't worth it on handheld or TV. But VR is another story.
@JaxonH Does this game work in PSVR? I have Bound and I know Bound does but I didn't think ABZU did. If it does I better go play it. Google can't find it.
Almost related. I bought Runner 3. I still hate 1 hit kill games bu
t I've made it thru level 1-5 on normal difficulty. Not sure how much farther I can go before stressing out and quitting, but I'm trying.
Ugh this game is so gorgeous and so so worth it. I made a point to go through and get all of the trophies on PS when it was free a while back. I would recommend this game 10x over
This looks like a beautifully immersive experience. Will definitely grab this on Switch when it launches.
@rjejr
I saw you were on in your play history.
Of the recent spread of games that have landed on Switch, I do wholeheartedly recommend Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Okami HD, Dark Souls, Diablo 3, World of Final Fantasy, YS VIII, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, South Park (both of them), DB Fighter Z, and a few others like Valiant Hearts The Great War (it runs beautifully on Switch, I'd swear it was 1080p in handheld if I didn't know any better).
I know you'll never play Dark Souls, but it really is great on Switch. So maybe you can just pass that recommendation along to someone else you know who would be interested. But I know some of those other games are definitely up your alley. You may have played a few of them on other consoles though. I had Diablo 3, Valkyria Chronicles 1, YS VIII and Dark Souls, but they're just so good on the little hybrid.
Pokémon and Civilization VI release on Friday though. You might dig Civ 6... Or not. I don't think I ever really figured out your taste in games.
I got this on my Pro and it occasionally has frame rate trouble when larger schools of fish come into play. The Switch version is gonna have to be scaled WAY back to handle it. I hope it turns out alright for those that wanna give it a go, but... I dunno. I recommend those interested to wait for reviews first.
@JaxonH "I don't think I ever really figured out your taste in games."
Me neither. Though with most things that concern me it's easier to figure out what I don't like, pretty much everything, than what I do, very little.
Out - sports, FPS, online, retro
In - JRPG, platformers, action, adventure, some puzzle, and those have to have very state-of-the-art graphics and be easy. And on sale b/c I'm also cheap. And complete b/c I also don't like going back to stuff.
Pokemon and SSBU will both be under the tree. I've never played a Pokemon game before, I'm figuring with all the hate it gets on this site I'll probably like it. SSBU is all about single player for me, after SSB4 I really just need my own save point to unlock stuff. And a sale on the XC2 $89.99 online bundle would be nice. Got Yoshi Crafted World on preorder. Hopefully they don't remove "Zen mode" like they did w/ DKCTF. I'd still like to pick up Mushroom Wars 2, just waiting on a sale. Rest is backlog, Skyrim, Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider. I've lost track of what else I have.
Always good to hear your opinion though, ya never know.
Are you planning on playing Pokemon w/ that $50 Pokeball? I'd get it on sale for my kid but $50 aint' happening. I got a pair of blue Joycon for $40.
Ooh my wife's almost home from her businesses trip, tracking her phone w/ an app, it's ok she knows, it's safer that way w/ cab drivers these days, ya never know, gotta go.
Played it for about an hour then got bored of it and I did love Journey. Beautiful looking but not enough substance
Not interested in this, not my kind of game
I love deep water exploration, so this game is for me.
Awesome game. Esp for Kids. My 6yr old loved it. Def will get this for mobile reasons.
For people that haven't played this game yet, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. If you have a big TV and good sound, you're in for a treat. It's suuuuper relaxing. 20 Dollars/Euros for a game that's you can finish in 2 hours or less, is a bit much though. I got it on sale last Christmas.
@Anti-Matter Not really.
This is a nice experience and that's what it is. it isn't a game.
@BlueBlur101 best critic on youtube
One for the watchlist.
Adored Abzu on PS4 and if the port holds up well I'd strongly recommend it. Beautiful and relaxing with an exceptional soundtrack. It's one of those very minimal, arty type of games and it does it very well.
Always wanted to try this game! The Switch is pretty much turning into the platform I play games I always intended to play on but never got around to.
Is a recommendation from that moron PewDiePie supposed to help sell the game?
Could understand if this was a VR game, but hasn't anyone played 3D underwater levels? God I hate them...
@mist Ha! was just about to put that too
@Scottwood101 "Now, abu is the monkey from Aladdin"
I've had this on my Steam wishlist for a while but now I think I'll definitely hold-off and wait for it to come to Switch
I'd been hoping for this one to come around!!
@BlueBlur101 love his obsession with Knack and Bubsy
@Scottwood101 Don't forget SUPAH MARIO BROS 2 BAYBEE
Please review <3
@bimmy-lee Yeah that's exactly the purpose of this game. To explore. When you gonna finish the game, you'll need to explore more the world to finish it completely and to unlock everything.
@Zenarium My personnel review will be a 8/10 but player need to be advise that it's a contemplation calm game. I don't think everyone will like it.
@SegaBlueSky I agree completely. This game was really well made.
