From developer Onion Games, Black Bird is set to bring its retro-inspired, shoot 'em up, fairytale action to Nintendo Switch next week, it has been confirmed.
Black Bird is described as being "the story of a hapless child", following the tale of a young girl who dies one day on a street corner, only to be reborn as the ominous “BLACK BIRD”. The bird is one of the great calamities, spoken of in the kingdom since ancient times.
The game contains an intriguing mix of an eerie tale, dark, comical art, an operatic soundtrack (which actually reminds us of the wonderful sounds from Danny Elfman and Tim Burton movie collaborations) and frantic action taking place inside a fairytale world. Here's a little more information courtesy of the game's press release.
What is Black Bird?
- A dark fairytale told in beautiful pixel art!
- Game play synchronised with an operatic soundtrack!
- A story with multi-endings!
- A horizontally scrolling 2D shoot’em up!
- Play the secret-character-packed “true mode” after finishing normal mode!
The game is scheduled for release on 18th October on Switch, priced at $19.99 / €19.99.

Looks cool.
In absolutely no capacity can this be considered 8-bit.
Looks pretty great though.
Er... Which 8-bit games looked like this?!
Ok, you got my attention.
20€ seems expensive. One for the wish list
Looks interesting,it's received a lot of praise in Japan. As others have said though, this is in no way 8bit. I think Ryan needs to rub his morning eyes
Most usurpated « 8bit game » of the day !
Nice anyway
I'd say 14-bit at least
Black bird fly...(Sir Paul)
Expensive but interesting
90's babies shouldn't talk about 8-bit if they don't know what it means. Just say retro.
Looks great for a 8 bit game surely it’s the blast processor doing the extra work
What I just saw ? The light is on but nobody's home. ! :/
Wow... that was indeed dark. As twisted as it looks, it oddly intrigues me. I'll keep an eye out for more on this.
Definitely not 8-bit but could pass for 16.
oh it’s the Million Onion Hotel people! looks neat
@bluesdance Yep! I was about to scroll on by, then remembered this is Yoshiro Kimura's outfit. Expect weirdness and a twist on gameplay. Million Onion Hotel and Dandy Dungeon are two of the strangest and most interesting games on mobile.
What the heck did I just watch, look's like a ok game but seem way over priced to me at $19.99. Maybe when I can get it for $4.99 or less I will pick it up other wise I will pass since I already have alot of Ps4 games that I game going to be picking up the rest of this year like RDR2, Shadow of the tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, etc just waiting until black friday to see if any of them go on sale just playing some PS4 backlog games right now and some Mario Kart 8 and trying to actually complete Zelda Breath of the Wild on switch for the first time since getting it last November.
This looks like my JAM.
If this is on par with their other games, count me in.
If it has online leaderboards then I will be downloading it., if not I can't justify 20.00 bucks for this type of game unless there is a reason to score chase on a leaderboard I lose interest in these types of games quick.
