New York-based developers Muse Games have today unveiled Hamsterdam, a brawling "hamster-fu" beat ‘em up designed for Nintendo Switch.
The once peaceful town of Hamsterdam - a strange, alternate Amsterdam that is populated by Hamsters - is in grave danger, with the vile chinchilla Marlo and his Rodent Gang wreaking havoc and terrorising the local rodent residents. You'll be playing as the hamster hero, Pimm, who must harness his mightiest martial arts powers and kick some tail through district after district, all on a journey to take down the Rodent Gang, save his grandfather, and restore peace to the town.

Game Features:
- Gestural controls
- Rhythm game mechanics
- 3D fighting animations
- Hamster-style kung fu
- Earn and equip new gear
- Idiosyncratic story and setting
The game blends rhythm and precision with good old-fashioned button mashing, aiming to provide classic arcade brawling mechanics alongside a whole host of martial arts combos. A Kickstarter campaign has kicked off today to support the project, hoping to reach a total of $8,000. If you'd like to learn more and pledge your support to the game, you can check it out right here.
Before you go, though, why not let us know your thoughts on this one in the comments below. Will you be backing Hamsterdam?

Slap Rhythm Buster Hamster version ?
God I hate Kickstarter... They should give equity in the game and it's sales to me once released if I am "investing" in it. Otherwise you take the risk of creation like everyone else and I will give you my money for a product once it's complete.
Seems like with one pledge you get both Vita and Switch versions. I like this!
Hope they don’t choke on all those promises, because this seems fun.
@hatch Yeah... They trying to pass "The empire state digital gaming production credit" (again) in NY. So that funding can go a bit further when studios get traditional funding in NYC. I did some time in gaming in the 90s (concept artist)... funding was always a pain.
KickStarter is the end of the line. I supported Shenmue 3 KS... and that looking like a disaster.
Looks great!
Wasn't this a season of The Wire? New Hamsterdam.
@angelus yeah hamsterdam was a great way of reducing the crime stats.
Odd, this looks like the game is pretty much already developed, maybe just shy of going gold? I'm not even really sure what this Kickstarter is for except maybe a bit of financial stability and extra content?
Why call it hamsterdam? Unless they're a bunch of Belgian rodents, I don't get it. It just takes place in the alternate Amsterdam? That's not clever, it's unnecessary.
Also, this seems like a stupid idea. Just my opinion
This looks wild and AWESOME.
@aznable surely you mean Dutch rodents?
@USWITCH64
Whatever i said, whenever i said it, it stands!
And yes probably
So many games come out without Kickstarter. I’m so wary and weary of Kickstarter
Aww, that's cute.
It still amazes me how much vitrol there is against Kickstarter when it has resulted in various, quality games/products.
Shovel Knight is likely the biggest example of success, but you also have Yooka-Laylee, Undertale, Hyperlight Drifter, Darkest Dungeon, and so many others.
Healthy skepticism is fine and good. If you have reservations about what it means to back a project, that's fair. But hating on crowdfunding projects simply because they're being crowdfunded doesnt hold much water anymore.
Especially considering some of these games in the last 5+ years may not even exist in their current form if not for kickstarters.
Hard pass.
@DTFaux Lest we forget: Hollow Knight.
Looks decent. Hope it gets released someday.
Rant aside, it looks pretty competent. I'm torn if I'll actually back it myself, but it looks like a KS where the devs will actually deliver.
Hopefully they find success.
That's a very peppy looking little game!
Hey, I can roll with this!
That's actually a good representation of Amsterdam. Marlo's upside down version that is.
@hatch Those other funding options typically involve producers who want to make a bunch of changes to the project. I worked with an animation director who ended up going through kickstarter because he kept dealing with producers who wanted the main character in the movie changed from a girl to a guy.
Yes, a lot of people may have said no to this idea... because the people they went to wanted the characters to be changed from mice to some random thing; garden gnomes, dung beetles, animate Christmas trees, whatever random, arbitrary thing some producer wants. A lot of people likely go to kickstarter because its an alternative to having their project ruined by producers.
A Kickstarter target of $8,000 seems very strange. If you need funding at that level, you go to a bank.

...I have no idea what this is supposed to be.

...Okay, I guess that makes more sense.

This looks good! Also a hamster for a rodent-based brawler is a good choice of protagonist if one has ever met a wild European hamster. Those things are as large as guinea pigs and are as aggressive as attack dogs. Getting one trapped in a rat trap is a pain since they are a protected species and need to be released alive – but the hamster usually prefers fight to flight!
As for Kickstarter, yeah... I have more trust in board game ones. But who knows, hopefully this one gets made.
@purrsneakitty Very cool, so it is just about bringing it to other platforms and improving it.
this is butt trash
