Similar to every other fighting game in the modern era, Arc System Works' BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is receiving post-release content. With the game now finally available here in the west, fans who were in attendance at the game's EVO 2018 finals were treated to a look at the previously announced Character DLC packs due out in North America on 6th August (aka tomorrow). There are nine characters in total, with three fighters from each of the following series:
- Persona: Akihiko, Mitsuru, Labrys
- BlazBlue: Nine, Izayoi, Mai
- Under Night In-Birth: Yuzuriha, Mika, Merkava
In addition to this, a fifth coloured tile in the logo was revealed towards the end of the trailer - hinting a new franchise could be joining in on the crossover action at some point in the near future.
Take a look at the trailer above and tell us if you’re excited about the arrival of these new fighters in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle.

Cool stuff.
Are there some neat arcade sticks out for Switch where you can just slot in a joycon for power and wireless connection?
@Pod I don't think that exists lol. I use my madcatz xbox 360 fightstick for this game.
Good to see Persona 3 getting some representation. I love how the characters are still put in crossovers even though the game's over 10 years old.
I’m all for additional characters but I always want a physical definitive edition. I wonder if ther will ever be one.
Alright, Akihiko is in!
Arcana Heart?
Going by the color I assume its going to be Arcane Heart or Hyperdimensional Neptunia
Yes, my favorite Persona character Mitsuru is being added! Loved her in P3, loved her in P4AU and I'm going to enjoy freezing my opponents again and again with the Execution Queen in Blazblue CTB.
@nessisonett well to be fair these designs come from more recent games, not P3 itself.
I have been watching EVO this weekend, and the Cross Battle top 8 was actually more entertaining than I thought it would.
@Xaessya Since Arc Systems works developed Arcana Heart 3 I would assume that is the most likely franchise joining in. Hyperdimensional Neptunia would require that new sprites be created, which I doubt Arc System Works would want to take the effort in doing. Neptunia does have more exposure in the West than Arcana Heart but ti's still a really niche series here. Arcana Heart series is quite popular in Japan I believe, so that series makes more sense to join CrossBattle.
you guys keep saying arcana heart but more than half that game is battles in the air. how is that going to translate into a game like cross tag where the camera height limit is like 1.5x your initial jump height.
it just doesn't sound like that'd translate well into BBTAG.
Wait even more dlc? Half The current roster was already dlc and now were getting more. Hope the price will be alright
Debating if I should wait till they make a "complete" retail version of this game. The most irritating DLC is characters in any archetype style game, fighting games being the most notorious.
@Yosheel I guess that's true, but as a fan of P3, I'm hoping all this eventually results in a remake in the engine of P5.
I love that these series’ are getting representation, but they really need to bring in a bigger name if they ever want to gain a better following for the game. I’m not a fan of any of these so they won’t be getting any of my money.
Dataminers already found evidence of Senran Kagura characters potentially being added months ago: http://shoryuken.com/2018/05/16/datamining-of-blazblue-cross-tag-battle-announcer-voice-reveals-possible-senran-kagura-guest-characters/
I mean, I'd be happy if I were wrong, because I would take literally any other franchise they could add over Senran Kagura...but I don't see what else that could've been used for since Arc Sys doesn't own that series.
I'll just continue waiting until the game is DLC complete. For now I'm good with Guilty Gear Xrd.
@CanisWolfred SK's Homura appeared in Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel so they can translate to fighting games pretty well.
We need GGXrd for the Switch. This game here is just embarrassing. Can't understand why everybody is so hyped for a button smasher. That's not the original Blazblue, Persona or Under Night in birth I know. Worst are the controls! Back to PS3 Fighting Games where every fighter was a hell of a thing with many complicated movesets to learn.
I wish Persona 5 could make it in.
@Handsomistic15 Wait who? Googles
...Oh....she was a Senran Kagura character? It was kind of hard to tell, because she looks like everyone else.
That's kind of my problem here: Senran Kagura has a surprisingly bland cast that really would not fit in with the likes of BlazBlue or Under Night In-Birth, nor are the games themselves well-written enough to make them as endearing as the cast of RWBY or Persona. Even if they make them fun to play, I'd have a hard time convincing myself to play them over Ragna, Akihiko, Jubei, or even any of the DLC characters they just announced here. I don't even know who Mika or Merkava are, but they look so cool that I have to try them out!
I mean, I'd make comparisons to SK, but I honestly don't know any of the characters names or remember if any of them had any standout features, because I spentmost of those games referring to everyone by whatever trope or fetish they're meant to embody, before I became utterly bored with the whole thing. There's nothing interesting about them whatsoever. I mean, I could say the same about 2/3rds of Arcana Hearts' cast, but at least it's an interesting and fun game that stands out in an already crowded genre.
SK 1 & 2 were just pretty bland Beat 'em ups that left me wishing I was playing any of the dozen or so Beat 'em ups that I've enjoyed over the years. It was more combo-focused, but so was Dragon's Crown. It had cutaways for special moves, but that just killed the flow of the game. Also Guilty Gear Judgment did that, too. The clothes-ripping did nothing for me, because I've played Hentai games that took that mechanic even further, and quite frankly, some of them had better graphics. Nothing about the games, from their characterization and flimsey storylines, to its gameplay, really do much of anything to make me care about its characters. Especially considering how much they seem to want you to care about them, pumping out spin-off after spin-off that only seems to carry over the generic, hyper-sexualized cast and an emphasis on blueballs-inducing fanservice.
That's what I meant when I said, "I would take literally any other franchise they could add over Senran Kagura." - there are so many options that could be interesting, that Senran Kagura's inclusion would come off as scraping the bottom of the barrel. They're kind of popular I guess? But so is Love Live. Wouldn't that be a total left-field move? How would that work out? I'd pay money to see that, and I don't even like Love Live.
Seriously, I could be here all day, but my point's been thoroughly made. I really hope those were just unused assets for a scrapped cameo, and we'll get something more interesting instead.
@LordVal Xrd on switch would be heaven. A fantastic game that needs more players.
@LordVal
Most fighting games are button mashers, BlazBlue definitely, guilty gear yep, persona arena uh-huh!
As a life long street fighter fan could i get into this? Is it the same style or is it more like king of fighters??
@Djgoa It's nothing like any of those. It's faster-paced, combo/juggle-friendly, has a 3-button system like Persona Arena, and is much more over-the-top than either Street Fighter or King of Fighters. I love those games, but this is a very different beast. Mind you, I haven't played it yet (waiting for a complete pack because I don't have infinite money), but as I understand it, since I have played the 3 games that it pulls characters from. Simply being a weapon-based fighting game already adds a lot of quirks, since different weapons mean different ranges, and every character has their unique abilities. Then add in the 2v2 tag team mechanics, and you'll have a lot that sets it apart from Street Fighter just from the on-set.
I mean, it might not actually be intimidating to get into, crossovers like this are usually meant to be more forgiving and give each franchise more exposure to new audiences, but I really have no idea about this particular case.
Similar to every other fighting game in the modern era, I'll get it when a complete edition is available at a reasonable price.
@Arnold-Kage
No, this is part of the previously announced DLC. The launch roster only had like 1 DLC character in it at launch iirc. The rest are getting released down the line in spurts, like this here.
Really when I bought the game I could already buy two dlc packs and both download blake and yang got free
Fingers crossed for Guilty Gear DLC!
I have my boy hakumen already but I’ll be getting the other characters as well.
A smash bros direct is coming 8/8. No news on this site about this so I let you know lol.
@CanisWolfred thanks for the detailed reply. Ill do some research as im in need of a decent fighter
I really love this game and I’m definitely buying the All-in-one pass for the DLC but I’m waiting for an Arcade mode. The Survival mode is nice but I’d love proper arcade mode. There’s even a space reserved for it in the main hall! Is that just decoration or are they planning to add it down the line?
Definitely considering getting this with Akihiko being added.
Now if only they could give the game some entertaining single player I would actually go back and try to get into it. This game desperately needs some type of arcade mode. It is basically Street Fighter V all over again. A real bare bones offering when it was launched, and it seems like it might slowly become a decent game... someday... hopefully.
The dlc pass is on 19.99 not that much imo plus i never heard of or played nigh birth,person or rbwy. I love the game awesome crossover and a nice addition to the switch library. Oan the people online will destroy you but its still awesome lol
Hyped for Yuzuriha and her theme being added!
@Pod ??? No.
I have mixed feelings on the content delivery of this game. The game itself is fun, solid, questionably balanced (Waldstein), but there's so much that feels bare bones. Episode mode is short, seems to have no ending other than just cutting off on a cliffhanger for each Ep. And there's no normal arcade mode either. Very thin package. Yet the play is quite fun. For the few characters that aren't DLC.
For those that have played this, I see that I'm 100% on all episodes in story mode, except the BB story that shows 69% completion rate. I played through it again. Still 69% completion rate. I'm guessing there's some hidden path based on questions answered or something? I'm not really sure why I can't complete the BB episode.
@NEStalgia If I'm not mistaken, in order to get the true ending on the BB story, you have to first complete every other story to 100%, then restart the BB story and select the first option on every dialogue choice.
@Danitendo Thanks, that must be it, I'll have to try it! I thought it must be something like that, but I didn't select the first dialog option when I went back and retried it. I think I selected the second to one of them.
What a weird, arbitrary way to do it! I'm going to guess the first option must match with what Ragna says in the other episodes? Though that doesn't account for his dialog with Nu that I don't believe exists in the other episodes.
@NEStalgia The four stories are pretty standalone in the sense that they don't really co-exist with each other and instead just make the protagonist of each francise be the hero in their own story, the correct dialogue choices on the BB story have more to do with what Ragna tells the characters of the other franchises in regards to the whole tournament and SYSTEM situation.
@GameOtaku but when someone knows the moves and combos you have no chance with that strategy.
My gf (never played a fighting game before) won 8 out of 10 online Matches with just hitting the buttons. In GGXrd or the original BB she is chanceless.
Were is the dlc ??? I've been waiting all day
@Danitendo hmm so i went through it again and picked the first option and still got the same ending and it shows 69%. Not with it to keep going through it i guess. Though it's the only single player content, and when i tried noob lobby online i was trashed by clearly not a noob
@NEStalgia Which ending was exactly? Noel's, Rachel's or Hazama's?
@Danitendo Neither actually, it's just Noelle (and Makoto's voice).
@NEStalgia That's weird, I could swear I got the True Ending by choosing the first option.
