Arena brawlers are all the rage nowadays. While Super Smash Bros. reigns supreme, lesser known titles under the same banner continue to fight for fame. One of the best ways to achieve this appears to be by recruiting an all-star cast of indie fighters.
The Switch eShop title Brawlout has been busy bolstering its own line-up with characters like Juan from Guacamelee! and Hyper Light Drifter. More recently it was announced Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee would also be a gust fighter in the game. Now, in the latest trailer building excitement for the all-format release, the protagonist from Dead Cells has been revealed.
What’s most intriguing about this particular reveal is the music associated with the new fighter. It’s evidently the theme of Shovel Knight playing in the background while the character from Dead Cells holds his battle-worn shovel high up in the air. It's worth pointing out Shovel Knight already features in Indie Pogo and Blade Strangers.
Do you own Brawlout on Switch? Are you interested in playing it if more indie fighters are added to the roster? Are you excited for the release of Dead Cells? Tell us below.

Can't wait for Dead Cells, and BrawlOut is on sale right now...very tempting.
I would not be surprised if Shantae becomes a playable character.
I really wanted to like this game and give them some support, but it had enough problems to make me regret my purchase. It’s nice to see these indie characters joining the roster.
@ButterSpill My advice: don’t get it if you’re aiming for a solo experience, the online is very, very laggy and the arcade is lackluster (broken may be a better word). Unlockables are not pleasant to work on, there’s still too much grinding involved to unlock basic things such as stages and characters.
I just bought this tonight since its on sale, and this is icing on the cake. I'd rather support an independent developer (who offers sales on their games) than Nintendo, who will never discount their first party goods and still sell a friggin buttload of units. That beibg said, i downloaded the game but haven't yet played it.... 🤔
edit: i also don't give a fig about smash bros. the nostalgia doesn't hit me, anymore, and honestly there are way too many characters for me to handle. brawlout is much more my speed- something i can play with the missus, or buddies when they come over. my friends won't get all offended if their playing as a luchador instead of kirby.
Awesome! This game is becoming an excellent alternative to Smash Bros, especially if you are a big fan of indie characters. It will never be able to compare to Smash but at a third of the price I don't really expect it to.
Hm. Ok. I'll buy it. I was putting it off due to the fact that I spend way too much money on video games as it is. But, what's another $17?
I love gust fighters. They sure use that wind to their ability, don't they?
After watching that trailer, I think they thought they were being clever introducing them with a shovel (a la Shovel Knight) but this game has steadily gone downhill from when I purchased it. It's now hidden many of it's stages behind lock and key when they used to be free to hop into. Honestly this game for me went from a 6.5 to a 4 instantly because of that. Locking existing assets behind a paywall of any kind is a stupid decision, and it's not like these are 'new' things. They've been in since before it officially launched.
Meh, this game is just aggravating to me now.
Wow, I wasn't expecting this. Now it has the Dead Cells guy and the one from Hyper Light Drifter, both of which I'm looking forward to. Kind of tempted now.
@Rohanrocks88
Well i must be missing these frequent sales
Tempting indeed. I’ll eventually get it. And with each new fighter I grow more interested. Keep ‘em comin’. Would love to see Wonder Boy/Monster Boy in there. That would be crazy. Hell, if I’m going nuts with it, Waluigi should be a boss in the game. Nintendo would, of course, would never take part haha.
While I like the idea of an indie all-stars cast, this game feels like one of those dodgy Mario Kart clones - only worth buying if you don't own a Nintendo system hosting the real thing.
@aznable, Have you never seen or heard of the Nintendo Selects line of games they are top Nintendo titles priced at 19.99, @Rohanrocks88 is correct and if you are a club Nintendo member you can get some great deals on Nintendo software through your club coins, you can even save money on brand new titles as soon as they are released if thats how you choose to use your gold coins . Nintendo titles also hold their value should you choose to sale them or trade them in at places like GameStop , ebay etc., they hold their
value better than any other software on the market .
That was probably a fakeout or a joke. Since Shovel Knight is guest starring all over the place he would be a pretty obvious choice. But instead it's Dead Cells (is that his name?).
@aznable I bought Splatoon 2 on sale from the eShop and ARMS had been on sale there too.
If you want an actually fun and well-designed indie Smash clone, look up Slap City by Ludosity.
Brawlout didn't do it for me.
@rushiosan
I contacted Angry Mob Games last week, and they told me that they are going to be releasing an update in the near future that will make it much, much easier to unlock everything in the game. All the stages will be available from the get-go, and the gem system will be gone. They had nothing to say about adding Shovel Knight or Shantae, however, so I don't think that's going to happen.
I picked up brawlout the other day since it went on sale. Its def not smash, but it’s more like smash 64 has a cousin that’s a little faster and not as precise. Decent game, well worth the $10, but it won’t be played 1 time when smash releases into switch.
And I miss having a shield.
@Romeo-75
Those don't exist for switch yet
@MartyFlanMJFan Yeah i remember there was like one large sale on the eshop, i recall. Physical retail copies were still full price.
Listen, before more people start going "wait but there are sales from time to time" just go back to my original post and mentally change the word "never" to the metaphorical "never" that people like to use. you know, the one that means hardly ever.
Loosen up, kids. Brawlout was on sale with a 40% discount. The game was worth the $12 asking price, especially for me since the last time i played smash was on the N64.
@rushiosan have you played post patch?
Just wait for Smash.
@DownRightSam I bought it last week...
@aznable ha, sorry wasn't having a go. We have ARMS, bought at full price and no regrets, worth it. My son already had Splatoon and I couldn't resist it for my Switch when it was sale from the eShop, again more than worth it. Hollow Knight is £10.99 normal price... I've played 75+ hours, still have more to do and I believe there's more content still to come. That is incredible value for money and puts many, many other games to shame. If you haven't already check it out, definitely an indie developer worth supporting.
@MartyFlanMJFan I've got hollow knight, it was one of the games that prompted me to get a switch last year. A masterpiece, a real showcase of games-as-art
Brawlout just keeps getting more and more compelling as a purchase.
Wasn't a fan of Brawlout when I played during that free beta period, but credit where credit is due, they are sure cranking out some Indie names in their game. As opposed to other games that tried making an Indie Smash, but only having very obscure characters that I questioned even existed.
With that said, I hope the gameplay is more refined now and continue gathering these guest characters. cough Undyne cough.
I got this game the other week when it went on sale. I didn't really care for it at all, despite all the people saying "the game is way better now" after the updates, it feels like a poor man's Smash Bros and it is nowhere near as fun to play.
@Torakaka If Shantae is in, I'm buying this game regardless of its expiration date in December.
I think the Shovel Knight theme was just a tease since we saw a shovel, like "Gotcha" moment, but we never know!
Brawlout's a very visually polished game, I gotta say.
I'm loving the addition of more indie guest characters and I hope we see some more familiar faces to the franchise soon. If Shovel Knight, Meat Boy, Gomez (Fez), Trace (Axiom Verge), and Regret (Zenonia) made it in then I'm double dipping on a physical copy.
@Torakaka I was going to say the same thing!!!
I just bought Brawlout on the sale (mainly because of Drifter) but I still don't get how it works (I have no experience in this game of fighting)
but anywau, I'm 100% in for a IndieSmash®
