A listing on the Switch eShop has revealed The Messenger is estimated to arrive in North America on August 30th for $19.99. Devolver Digital and developer Sabotage originally showed the 2D game earlier this year at the Nindies Showcase.
The eShop release channels classic series such as Shinobi, while adding in plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour. As previously noted, there is a time-traveling narrative - transforming the game world from 8-bit to 16-bit, and there's also character progression skill trees along with a variety of "silly" bosses to challenge. Be sure to check out our interview with the game's development team as well.

About time! Been looking forward to this one!
Wow, this looks fantastic. Hopefully Limited Run gets their hands on this.
Definitely looking forward to this one. The music, the crisp graphics, the retro vibe- this looks absolutely delicious.
I only want to be a Ninja if I can have Yolandi by my side.
I figured it was out soon based on the interview last week with the developer. Been looking forward to this and Guacamelee 2 (on PS4)
Hype!
Really looking forward to this. I've been absolutely loving Dead Cells and was about to pull the trigger on Iconoclasts earlier but chose Okami HD instead. With Hollow Knight and a couple of other unplayed Metroidvania's in my collection Iconoclasts can wait for now. I'll be getting this beauty day one though.It seems to be more of a Shovel Knight type platformer than a Metroidvania which is very welcome.
Too much stuff coming in such a short time frame. Think I'll just stick to Octopath Traveler and Okami for the time being, but I will definitely be picking this up at some point.
@OorWullie Iconoclasts is great!
This looks surprisingly excellent. The pixel art is gorgeous. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it.
I love classic Ninja Gaiden, so this could turn out to be a really great addition to my library.
I just read last part of the title "messenger arrives at Switch" and i thought it was about facebook messenger

It looks really good, but 20 bucks for a digital release always smells like future retail release to me.
In the interview they said it's not in the cards right now, but while I wait for a significant sale maybe the time comes.
I'll have to find a way to fit this into my already full wishlist!
@Ubik Please mind your language!
This game looks exceptional.
I feel like we've finally reached a place where the smaller, independent developers have matured to the point they're cranking out masterpieces on level of the 8/16 bit classics, and well beyond. I have a feeling this game will definitely top Ninja Gaiden.
These indie devs are getting better and better at making video games
This looks great!...but does anyone remember that Mark of the Ninja is supposed to be coming at some point as well? I wish we'd hear some more news on that one. Anyway, definitely gonna keep my eye on this. I may grab it along with Bloodstained Curse of the Moon so I get some Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania at once. I've never played Castlevania games, but I have played the NES Ninja Gaiden games, and I found them to be fun but a bit too difficult for me without restore points.
Might check this out after it gets a sale.
Cannot wait for this one! Brings back a lot of shinobi and ninja gaiden memories. This one and another indie have me hyped beyond belief, that being Save Me Mr Tako. Although, i'm starting to lose confidence that will ever come out.
I am excited for the transition between linear 8 bit levels and metroidvania 16 bit!
This looks amazing, but for that price I think I’ll wait for a cartridge.
@Octane ooops, however, this news still tickles me!!
