Publisher Degica has confirmed Spacewave Sofware's competitive shmup title Rival Megagun will be arriving on Nintendo Switch alongside the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions at the end of 2018. The split-screen battler takes the classic top-down shmup template and adds a few neat competitive twists.
The coolest feature is the ability to transform your ship into a giant boss machine known a Mega Gunship, which you can use to invade your opponent's screen and blast them to smithereens. The PC version will support both local and online multiplayer, so here's hoping the Switch version follows suit.

Let us know what you make of Rival Megagun, and whether this unique twist is enough to set it apart from an already heavy shmup presence on Switch...

Twinkle Start Sprites - minus the slowdown.
Gives a new meaning to "score attack".
Neat idea! Using vs puzzler template in a shmup. Hopefully plays well too.
Saw the word 'online' for a split second in the trailer. Please tell me this game has online versus mode? That would be amazing.
No jolly cooperation here, just friendship ending drama.
For a split second I thought it was going to be Senko no Ronde DUO by Taito. I'll keep an eye on this one
Wowza! I'm very interested. I just posted yesterday that I need to buy a SHMUP for the Switch ASAP. I will definitely be making a purchase from within the shmup genre within the next 5-6 days with my eyes towards this game's upcoming release. Hopefully it plays as good as it looks and sounds.
Switch is the ultimate Shmup machine.
@dkxcalibur I got Graceful Explosion Machine and love it; don't know if that qualifies as a shmup though.
@NinjaBadger I need TSS in my life (get on it, Hamster!). This should at least fill that gap for a time... it's just not 'cute' enough. Plus, classic shmup slowdown is one of my favorite "features."
@dkxcalibur If you are to buy one shoot-em-up, Tengai is the one you want. Incredible game.
@OorWullie Maybe that'll be the one, although that game has a style that I don't like as much as the other shmups.
Now this looks interesting!
Sadly local multiplayer on the Switch will not be so easy, since its a handheld and you need an extra Switch for each player (and maybe an extra copy of the game too). 😔
Oooo pretty. Feels like a Macross Plus wannbe jam!
I'd rather have the actual Twinkle Star Sprites, but i'll give this one a chance.
Anyway, the real news here is that Degica is publishing a game on the Switch - now i really hope for their Cave and Triangle Service stuff, Game Tengoku, Judgement Silversword and, most importantly, CRIMZON CLOVER.
Looks fun, might pick it up!
@MrBlacky Did you watch the trailer? It shows split-screen...
@Kilroy
Must be the PC version, because how would that work on the Switch? Do you need to share one Switch and one person is holding the left side and he other person the right side? 🤔
Been playing this one on steam for a long time now, i fully recommend it.
@MrBlacky well its two player split screen obviously, the same as it is on the PC. You play it best on your TV or just really small on the handheld.
@YANDMAN
Okay, but how does the second player play?
And what do you mean with "TV"? The Switch is a handheld.
@MrBlacky I'm not sure you know what a Switch is
@NinjaBadger
I'm just messing around, because people just won't stop claiming that the Switch is a handheld.😉 Which it isn't (only), but instead of calling it just a game console or a hybrid console, they try to proof the world it's a "handheld".
Hey, from now on I call the PS4 a Blu-ray player! 👍
@MrBlacky I think you're taking that argument a bit too seriously. Not everyone is lives on technicalities an exact phrasing. Switch can be used exclusively as a handheld or exclusively as a home console. If people want to call it a handheld, just let them. It's not a big deal.
When wanted Radiant Silvergun for your birthday and your mother showed up with Rival Megagun.
@BigKing If it's an original Saturn copy, good luck with that. Wonder what's cheaper, an original or a 360 plus a digital copy.
EDIT: Silly me. Of course a 360 and a digital copy is cheaper. Didn't realize 360's were so cheap.
@MrBlacky The switch obviously plays on the tv, this game unless altered specifically for the switch will be very hard to play on that small screen.
