The Nintendo Switch userbase may well still be modest in size, due to the system only being 7.5 months old, but it's evidently eager for new experiences on the system. Smaller publishers and developers have benefitted from this and there have been a number of heartening examples of studios being delighted by sales on the Switch eShop.
Curve Digital, publisher of The Molasses Flood's debut game on the Switch, has spoken to MCV about the buzz within the company after seeing the launch day sales for the game. It's gone well beyond what was expected on day one, and even represents the best launch that the game has had on console. Curve's publishing director Simon Byron had this to say.
It’s a real relief having our personal enthusiasm for the Switch being backed up with sales success. It’s been incredibly frustrating only having anecdotal evidence about the buzz for Switch titles, so we’ve been genuinely desperate to get a game out there so we could get some hard data ourselves.
There was a real buzz in the office this morning – [managing director] Jason [Perkins] was in before me, which is very rare indeed – and it was specifically due to the excitement of seeing figures. I had a number in my head which I would be very pleased with – and it was a third over that.
Indeed, it’s fair to say it’s had its best ever day on any console since we’ve been publishing it, beating any other format we have launched on. It’s done just under half of our first full month forecast in a day.
There are always nerves around launching a new title – and particularly on a new format – but The Flame In The Flood is a perfect fit on Switch and we’re delighted it’s been received so well. Next up for us on Switch will be Serial Cleaner, with Human: Fall Flat following in December.
Another success story in waiting, it seems, which can only be a good thing for the Switch eShop. The more positives we see around quality games achieving solid sales, the more talented developers we'll likely see bring their games to the store.
It's a good time for fans of download games.

Good for them. It looks like an interesting game. Reading reviews elsewhere, it averages about 70% on Steam and 75% on PS4. I hope they've tried to make some improvements on Switch and that it's not just a straight port.
I'm increasingly tempted by this title myself. Looks interesting and with plenty to do along the way.
I was looking at this one yesterday after I finished Golf Story. Ended up going with Wulverblade, but this one is definitely still on the radar. Looks interesting.
I will be picking this one up soon, just having to focus on homework before Stranger things and Mario suck up my life.... And this game of course haha
I'll wait on a sale for this one.
Just looking at the Game Info and see that it's £14.99 and $14.99... :/ lol
This looks like a lot of fun, but it needs to get in line behind Golf Story and Wulverblade, and I'm not even buying those until I've played a couple of years in Stardew Valley.
Looking forward to NL's review. I wonder how much of a visual downgrade the Switch version received to play well on the Switch?
I took the plunge last night because I was feeling in the mood to play it. Spent about a couple of hours on it so far and I've enjoyed it so far, despite failing pretty terribly.
Yet another Indie Switchsess story! (see wuh i did thar)
i brought the game and i've been enjoying it a lot, even if die many times but learn much each time i fail
Just because this game exceeded expectations doesn't mean those expectations were high. I wonder what the actual numbers were.
Not really for me, but always good for games to do well on the system.
@LegendOfPokemon Wow, you must be fun at parties lol. It did better than they thought it would. That's win no matter how ya spin it.
@crackafreeze so far I am enjoying it. Confused but learning. each time I die I make it further. Well worth the $15 if you like the genre.
I tend to always hold out for sales, but this one is on my ever-expanding wishlist.
“...but The Flame In The Flood is a perfect fit on Switch and we’re delighted it’s been received so well.”
@Honelith I have it and it looks and plays great in handheld mode so far.
More evidence that third party titles do great on Nintendo consoles as long as they aren't gimped compared to the other versions.
It is a great game that had me checking eShop every hour until it came on on 12/10. Hope people make it a great success. It so deserves the 15 euros it asks
I was intrigued but I ultimately passed due to having too much to play already, and that's even before FE Warriors, Mario, Skyrim and Xenoblade. It's nuts.
I'll be getting it soon, but SMO is coming and I'm still sucked into Splatoon 2 and just started Stardew Valley.
This game deserved more love when it released last year, so it's wonderful to see it find some success with this late port. Brilliant concept, incredible soundtrack, and solid survival gameplay that manages to stay compelling even with the repetition endemic to the genre.
In fact, I think it's much more suited to portable play, as it plays best in bursts rather than long sessions. There are lots of easy stopping points, such as embarking to or from an island. And there is an immediate draw to explore what lies ahead when you pick it back up.
Additionally, I see it as the kind of game you pick up a few times a week over a long period, accumulating resources and attempting further runs. Simply plowing through the story diminishes the underlying value to me. Rather this game will be most appreciated by those looking to come back and make another try down the river, whether success or failure.
Does look interesting. Still Steamworld Dig and Stardew Valley are higher on my eShop queue.
@daveh30 same
@LegendOfPokemon This is a very negative thinking for a very positive result. Perhaps you may want to re-evaluate the way you judge succesful stories.
@Reignmaker Absolutely! Steamworld Dig 2 and Stardew Valley are must-have games, that will appeal to almost everyone. The Flame in the Flood is much more niche, but a pretty good one if you like survival games like Don't Starve.
Excellent. It's funny to see the moaning from some on the internet about Indies not tallying with how many are finding success. Switch is targeting Vita, Wii U and 3DS users and all of them had good indie support. Plus the hybrid design and relative lack of power make Indies a perfect fit for Switch.
Meh, another "Success story" with zero numbers. This is a success story (a 2 man team)
https://venturebeat.com/2017/10/13/cuphead-sales-pass-1-million-in-two-weeks/
Or this
http://nintendoenthusiast.com/blog/2017/07/28/ultra-street-fighter-2-sells-450k-units-capcom-says-smash-hit/
Actual numbers. "Expectation" "projections""targets"... Can be 2 units can be 100k, no freaking idea. I call this marketing BS.
Wishlisted but will pass for now. Looks good!
Smash for Switch confirmed.
@Agramonte I would hope after being made for seven years that Cuphead was a good game. Does make sense when you find out that it was made by two people but then you read the Wikipedia page and see that it was made by more and the two people is just marketing BS like you said. Having it be a Microsoft exclusive, and nice injection of cash no doubt, would also keep them going for the last seven years.
@Mqblank and you tip toe around the point of my post... No numbers. And what, so SF wasn't a success story on Switch because it had Capcom bankrolling it. Again, hollow knight "success story"
http://teamcherry.com.au/huge-hk-one-month-update-over-65000-copies-sold-holy-moly/
The difference continues to be the same. Actual sale numbers.
@Agramonte okay. The publishers are making it all up.. the game bombed, not a success and are making up just to save face.
Good grief!! They had a launch target and have beaten the numbers they had in mind.
That's a success no matter what the numbers are.
@Agramonte I thought Nintendo had a policy against talking about eShop sales numbers. Not saying I agree with the policy, but it might not be a case of the dev avoiding the numbers to add a marketing spin, I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed to divulge them. With games on Nintendo platforms it's quite common to see indie devs talk about sales relative to other platforms or expectations simply because they aren't allowed to be more specific.
@kobashi100 nonsense, I didn't say it bomb. I said that NL writes an article about "Success" yet there is zero sale number reference.
If someone comes And says the last campaign met "expectations" for site traffic - the first thing I say is what are the analytics numbers. Never been anywhere where you dont need to backup a statement with actual numbers.
@Agramonte You don't seem very good with numbers anyway, so why do you care? Using an incorrect statement as "(a 2 man team)", and when that's pointed out, it's not relevant?
And the sales figures can't be 2 units as in your example, since 2 units can't be the result of a sales projection exceeded by a third.
Bought it this morning, but played Splatoon2's Salmon Run for four hours.. looking forward to trying out the Flame tonight though! Glad to see it did well.
are we going to get a review for this one?
@jariw I said "a 2 man team" because it is reference in the article I posted (studio is only two people). The poster apparently made their own research that contradict that (makes my point that actual numbers are important). And no, that makes no difference in the actual point that it contains a sale number.
Nop, I said Statements like "expectation" "projections" "targets" can be 2 units or 100k. Making the point that they are ambiguous without data. Seeing how not all those terms are in their statement it is obvious I was giving general examples.
@Agramonte
What gain does the publisher have for talking up the sales of a game if it actually wasn't successful?? Look at all the publishers who outright said their game didn't do well on Wii U. There have also been several instances where a publisher said the same about a their game on Vita. Heck, not that long ago, Jools Watsham(guy behind Chicken Wiggle on 3DS) said his game underperformed.
I'm just not understanding the negative spin here. With all of these success stories, this invites more and more indies to the scene. Of course we'll get a lot of bad indies, but we'll also get plenty of good titles too.
@daveh30 ok, i guess SF and Puyo-Puyo also had retail copies so they could post numbers. I find this rule unfortunate.
Hollow Knight is coming to switch, and the 65k launch is on record. Would be amazing if it crushes that on Switch. I held off buying it on Steam so I can help sales on Switch.
That music is lovely.
Looks interesting not sure I will buy it now or ever. Mario is coming so ya lol. Music is nice tough but they dog needs to shut up for a minute omg
@KryptoKrunch i dont see Pointing out there is no base number as "negative spin" - Even the publisher points out about getting "hard data".
Someone pointed out that digital only games can't release those numbers. That is unfortunate... Those restrictions do not seem to exist anywhere else. It would be amazing if games like Rime, hollow knight and BattleChasers came out with solid actual numbers for everyone to see.
@Agramonte "Indeed, it’s fair to say it’s had its best ever day on any console since we’ve been publishing it, beating any other format we have launched on."
This news will bring more support hopefully.
"hmmm, there's no way to negatively spin this....I'll claim I don't believe them. That's all I have really"
@Agramonte
True, but the publisher knows the numbers, they just can't give them out publicly. It makes no sense for Curve or any indie publisher to exaggerate the success of the Switch version.
@KryptoKrunch I don't think that's what @Agramonte is saying. He's not saying it wasn't a success, he's saying it was a success by the studio's standards. The problem is that we don't know what the studio's standards were, so this success story is reduced to simply being anecdotal.
Edit: maybe anecdotal is the wrong word, but I think it's understood what I'm trying to say
It's wonderful that the Switch is becoming home to all these great eshop titles. I have come to love Golf Story, and spent most of the weekend playing Stardew Valley. I wouldn't mind this trend continuing for a long long time.
Does this game have hd ruble?
@LegendOfPokemon
They did say it beat every other console's launch on day one, and it was a third above their target, so they set the bar at least as high as other console's launch sales
@LegendOfPokemon I too would like to see the numbers, just to see the range. But I think the more important thing to take away from this is that the Switch launch was their best among all the consoles. This bodes well for the development of more Switch games in the future.
Nintendo gamers know what's good, just bring out a quality title and it will sell on Switch. There's no need to even advertise.
@Nincompoop Let's not go nuts!
Just having a chuckle here at those who think they need to know numbers before they get to cast their all-important opinions on whether it was a success or not. Presumably they will set those numbers against their knowledge of what the game cost to make, the studios financials etc.
Thanks for cheering up a grim Monday morning.
IMO this game is a 9.5, but I like the genre. I played for over 6 hours straight after downloading it. Its a mega gem for sure thats insanely satisfying and addictive. These indie titles are making the switch one of the best consoles of all time to me. Theres never been a better time to be a gamer if youre a switch owner.
LOL! @ lacybern6449. Its called a false negative, you prolly have full blown AIDS by now aint no witch doctor in the world gonna fix that with no chickenfoot herbal soaps.
This seems to become a pattern. Devs going in with cautious expectations, quickly raving about the awesome sales figures on the Switch. I hope more devs jump on board because of this.
@Fake-E-Lee best short hand review of the month. Thanks.
Great gameplay, great music and a lovely art style... Original in setup too. I'm going to buy this.
Wow, they are publishing "Human Fall Flat" on the Switch as well? I picked that up on Steam in a Humble Bundle about a month ago and it was definitely an unexpected gem for me - I found it both relaxing and compulsively entertaining (I binged it in about 3 long sessons). I'm not normally one for motion controls, but this game is a perfect fit for the JoyCons (which always stay parked in my Switch) and I'll double-dip to replay this if they get a good motion control scheme implemented.
I'm broke
Good read. A Winner, is everyone
